1.
Ha! That's how it happens. How many garages in this country are used to keep a car in? Most are full of junk, especially if there is no attic or basement space. New houses that come with a garage often are too small to keep any kind of car in - they're just crap-huts built very cheaply so that the house can be sold 'with garage' and the price bumped up accordingly. My old mum and dad moved to a new-build house and my dad made much of the fact that the house came with a garage - he could get his car in there (VW Golf) no problem, but the garage wasn't wide enough to open the driver's door to get out! So the car lives on the drive and the garage is full of junk...
The last time I lived in a house with a garage the car insurance company wanted to charge a higher premium for parking it in the garage than for leaving it on the drive. So strangely enough we parked the car on the drive and just used the garage for storage
2. In a worrying development twice this week I've had a Deko in my Thomann basket and twice I've not bought it. Once for a PJ and then for that T-bird last night. Maybe this means I'm finally developing a healthier relationship with GAS?
3. I use soundmagic E10 in-ears. They sound great and there's no way anyone else can hear what you're listening to.
4. I would continue to use ovnilab to pick a compressor you do like the sound/look of and then google the spec to find out if it takes batteries. A boring answer, perhaps, but probably a sensible one.
5. Its staggering to see just how many supposedly professional or semi-professional musicians have an utterly lax attitude to PLI and basic safety checks like PAT. Be thankful that driving instructors and restaurateurs take themselves more seriously as professionals. Want to be treated like a pro? Then behave like one, get your insurance sorted out and your gear checked.
6. I had the PJ in my basket and convinced myself not to buy it. I've already got a PJ, I only want this one because its so cheap. Holding out for something more interesting!
7.
Well I think I know what has given the Baritone guitar its deko status. I restrung it with D'Addario Medium gauge baritone strings (14-68) which has made a big improvement in the playability at the bottom end although for my tastes I'd be happier with an even heavier low B. However fitting the new strings has shown that it is impossible to get even string spacing with the bridge that is currently fitted, as the height and intimation screws get in the way of the ideal positions for the stings. Looking at the Eastwood version, I see that they have a more conventional Tune-o-matic style bridge rather than the Jaguar style that this Harley Benton sports. However Tune-o-matic bridges are fixed radius so I'm going to need one that matches the radius of the HB fingerboard. There's no specs given on either the Thomann site or for the Eastwood model, so how do I measure the fingerboard radius to ensure I get the correct replacement bridge?
Here is some info about modding the bridge on these: http://thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/38132/ngd-mosrite-style-baritone-deko
8. I would have definitely bought the TBird if we'd seen it. if another one comes up I'd love to snag it. One of you guys can have it once I'm done with it---so long as you don't mind cleaning it up a bit once my wife beats me to death with it...
9. There's someone on the Glasgow / Edinburgh / Central Scotland Facebook music gear group selling a sunburst one for £120. No idea if that's a realistic value.

11. What do you reckon the story is with a b stock deko? I'd be *slightly* worried that these ones are actually knackered. So tempted by a jazz though...
12. Top work. The only thing I'd say is that you don't always need a click track, depending on genre and how tight you are as a band. Sometimes you get a better "performance" without one. That said, if you can't keep time with one you probably shouldn't be recording at all...
13. Did a gig once on St Patricks day and the highlight was a punter puking on the bar half way through our set...
14.
Can you post the second like again please? AFAICS the 5-string Artcore Bass is short scale. I's want to try one before I actually bought it but have never actually seen one except on the Ibanez site.
This one? http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/bass_guitars_detail.asp?stock=12122215361632 GuitarGuitar in Edinburgh had one in last year. It looked great in the flesh but I didn't get the chance to try it.
15.
A series/parallel switch mod. That's what the S1 switch was on some noughties Fender Jazzes. Cheap mod that when in series will give you the oomph of a P bass.
This. I had a Jazz bass that had this (it was McNach's, then I bought it, he missed it so much I sold it back to him) and it was fantastic. Sound guys used to complement me on how good it sounded. No, really!
16.
Never heard Hotrods before. I'll suggest these to the drummist
They're like a whole bunch of thinner rods taped together. Give a more mellow, quieter sound than traditional sticks but are much harder than brushes.
17.
Yeh he had brushes. But disco/funk/motown didnt sound right with them at all
Lol, no that wouldn't work. Hotrods might have been acceptable though---I actually really like the sound of hotrods, more drummers should use them anyway
18.
Our drummer was probably the most effected by it. He said he resorted to almost letting the sticks drop onto the drums rather than hitting them.
Hotrods or brushes can help in this scenario, although thats still not an enjoyable compromise for the drummer.
19. Depends on the bass.
20. Last time I did this I just bought really cheap slug tape off ebay, a fraction of the price of the "conducting copper tape" and it turned out to conduct across the glue anyway :-) win!
21.
Anyhow..... For mine: Wonderful tonight - Eric Clapton lay down Sally - Eric Clapton Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton I think you can see a theme
I like you. We can be friends :-) Clapton Is God... Damn awful.
22. Hotel California - The Eagles. Hate it. Awful, annoying guitar solo. Riddled with clichés. Money For Nothing - Dire Straits. Symbolic of everything that was wrong with the 1980s Don't Stop Me Now - Queen The ultimate "I'm going to force my idea of a good night on everyone else" anthem. Beloved of people who think that if you haven't put 1500 pictures of your evening on Facebook to show everyone just HOW MUCH FUN you're having then you can't possibly be enjoying yourself. All of the subtlety of a brick in the face but with none of the charm. Awful, awful, awful.
23. I reckon I could get away with 3 strings. We recorded an album last week and I honestly don't think that I played any notes at all on the G-string. Mark Hamilton from Ash had only three strings on his bass for years, he claimed that it was because as a teenager he broke the G and was too poor to buy a replacement so learned to play that way.
24. These multi-genre gigs are always a nightmare in my experience, but for a first gig they're fairly standard. I try to avoid them now, unless the bands are utterly fantastic everyone tends to go home a bit disappointed! With regards gear sharing, there is no "right" answer. What is expected varies from bass player to bass player, band to band, venue to venue, promoter to promoter and gig to gig. The only golden rule is "sort it out in advance". Contact the other bands, contact the promoter. Arrange in advance exactly who is providing what. So long as all the planning is sorted before the night and everyone knows the score then thats the important thing. If you don't want to share your gear, thats fine---but make sure you state that in advance, because the other bands may have been given a different impression by the promoter or even by whoever it is in your band that does the bookings. If you are going to share gear, brilliant, but arrange it in advance so that there aren't three drumkits and four bassamps sitting at the side of the stage taking up precious space. My own experience of gigging the originals circuit is that if you are completely unwilling to compromise on gear sharing then there's going to be problems. Its just not realistic to completely tear down between every single band at multi-band gigs. You just have to make sure that the compromise is acceptable to everyone.
25. Timmo another great trick for discerning bass notes is to use something like Audacity (suspect Transcribe does it too) and shift the entire track up an octave (but without changing the speed). The singers will sound like chipmonks and the other instruments a bit odd but the bass lines should really jump out at you. I do this all the time for learning things like Reggae tunes where the original recording is so muddy that the pitch just disappears.
