1.
Disclaimer: I'm an old hippy. Most of this crap was left behind in the '60s.
And the hippy movement didn't have an image? As for left behind in the sixties, I give you prog rock, disco, 2tone, punk, new romanticism, goth, rave, heavy metal, hip hop etc etc etc etc. All styles that have emerged since the sixties and all with a strong visual image. Sure, how you dress doesn't change what you sound like. But that doesn't mean that what you look like doesn't change how people perceive you or that it isn't important. Anyone who is serious about "making it"---or even just making money or getting good gigs---as a musician who doesn't consider their image is making a massive mistake. If you're not too fussed about either of those aims then knock yourself out but don't be surprised when its musicians that look the part who get the parts.
 2.
You've not bought much from Deutsche Grammophon lately, I'd guess.
I don't quite understand what point you're making. Regardless, classical music has a very strong image to it---its dominated by dinner jackets and suits for the gents, and dresses of some sort for the ladies. You won't find too many classical concerts where the conductor turns up in an iron maiden tshirt and some jeans from asda
 3.
When it comes to music, I have no interest in how pretty or styled the artist is, because I listen to music, I don't look at it.
# No, of course you don't. Thats why records don't have any artwork on them and why nobody has ever made a music video. Every single major musical movement of the last 60-odd years has had an image. Music intersects with art, fashion, photography and becomes part of something wider, it does not and it will not exist in isolation. The people who think "image isn't important" when it comes to making music are quite frankly kidding themselves on.
 4. More bands need to make an effort with their appearance. No, scrub that, every band should make an effort with their appearance. I've had little success trying to convince others of this though! I generally do tend to think about what I'm going to wear on stage although so far I haven't really found my gigging "look". Its hard to do something that hasn't just been done a thousand times before or that suits (I'm not wearing a fedora in my rock band, for instance).
 5. There was an EBS multicomp offer in the Amazon Black Friday Week deals earlier today, £79.99 which seems like a very good deal indeed. Probably worth keeping an eye on Amazon for the rest of the week.
 6.
You could set to the louder setting during sound-check, then back off the volume knob to 'normal'..? When the need arises, turn up the wick. When no longer required, dial back to 'normal'. Hope this helps.
This, or an EQ pedal. Best way to do "clean" boost in my experience. Depends a lot on the amp though.
 7. Another thing which can be really hard to nail and get right is dynamics. We did a gig a while back and one of the bands did rock covers---they were very tight and could all play but there was something not quite "right" about them. Finally it dawned on me that they were just the same volume level all the time. No dynamics, no light or shade to the songs---just bash through everything at the same level. It becomes really boring to listen to.
 8. Anything with Nile Rodgers on guitar will almost certainly require the guitarist to absolutely nail the groove. Get Lucky is a particularly tough one because what sounds like a single guitar part is actually two guitars overdubbed. As well as being an absolute genius Nile can be a sneaky git when he wants
 9. I reckon that even if Hiscox don't *make* a case specifically for a parker fly bass that they'd make one if you asked. Their customer service is impeccable. I sent them an email asking if it were possible to buy extra padding for a case and two days later an envelope popped through my door full of padding absolutely free of charge!
 10.
So Bill, sorry if this is a slight derail, if you wanted a Amp with the most volume "out front", what measurement would you be looking at? SPL?
Its actually very hard to correlate perceived volume with measurements. SPL is not a bad place to start but even then the relationship between SPL and loudness isn't a simple one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness
 11. Hiscox definitely make a hard case for Parker Fly guitars. Dunno if they do a bass version.
 12.
ordered!
Lol, good work. I think you'll like it, I had one and it sounded good but I was only using it as a home practice tool so it fell by the wayside when I got a B3 and started messing around with more sounds. If I was a richer man I'd have kept it around for occasional live use.
 13.
5th and 12th fret? Bloody showoff . I get a nose bleed at the 6th
Might need to change your avatar then
 14. http://www.thomann.de/gb/hartke_bass_attack_vxl_60th_ann.htm £38 for a bass attack? yes please!
 15.
This is true and the psychology is complex and a bit sad. Uncle - where did this quote come from?
I think it's from an interview in "bass culture" by lloyd Bradley. Essential reading if you're interested in reggae.
 16. One of the biggest self-delusions in amateur musicians is the idea that its not having a magical piece of equipment thats holding you back. We've (nearly) all done it---spending hours drooling over the "perfect" piece of gear because its the missing piece of the puzzle when actually the missing piece is (nearly always) just practice.
 17.
I can't say I share your experiences with silent tuning with a clip-on, Uncle Psychosis. Most of the instruments I tune with a clip on are unplugged.
I quite often like to tune whilst a chord is ringing at the end of a song or during a guitar intro. There's absolutely no way I'm unplugging my bass to do so!
 18. The main issue I have with clip-on tuners is that it makes silent tuning a bit of a faff. Yes you can turn down your bass but personally speaking I always find that doing that is a recipe for disaster! I wrote this in another thread recently: Want indestructable? Buy a TU-3 Want accurate enough to set intonation? Buy a Sonic Research Turbo Tuner Want cheap? Buy a snark pedal tuner or a korg pitchblack Want really cheap? Buy a clip on. Want to tune lots of strings at once? Buy a polytune They'll all tune your bass great. Just choose what secondary feature interests you the most. ipb.global.registerReputation( 'rep_post_2590880', { domLikeStripId: 'like_post_2590880', app: 'forums', type: 'pid', typeid: '2590880' }, parseInt('') );
 19.
I have G&L gas ATM. The question is L series or M series.
I've got an M-series tribute and its fantastic. However, if Thomann are doing the L-series for £300 then thats a very, very tempting propostion. The only reason I'm not feeling a bit ill at how much my m-series cost in comparison is that the necks on the L-tributes are a bit on the chunky side for me.
 20.
Anyone on here know where I can find a 70s p bass decal?
....on the headstock of a 70s P bass? Wayhay!!!
 21.
And one important thing is that you then stop yourself from sliding down strings - for example if you have say E to E octve down (fret 7 of A string to open E) - then you must learn to use the alternate finger rather then slide from the string above.
Mega thread bump...but thats the exact opposite to what several bass teachers have taught me.
 22.
Fluffy to tray, rough to pedal
Yep, this is the "standard" way of doing it.
 23. Well, the obvious question is: why do you want to sell it?
 24. I seem to recall that the site trialled a system like that---searchable fields, etc etc and that everyone hated it and demanded the return of the current system!
 25. I can never quite understand the abuse Adam Clayton gets, it's a bit odd. I don't really like u2 but him and the edge take way too much stick in comparison to other, similar artists. As to the bass itself, I don't get it. It's just a really, really expensive green jazz bass isn't it? If that is what I wanted I'd rather buy a standard one and get it refinned to my own custom colour, it would probably be cheaper. If it's just designed to appeal to Adam Clayton fans then fair enough but there seems precious little to excite anyone else.
