Guitarist - retuning when putting a capo on...
uncle psychosis replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
Get a mate to video a gig, then sit the whole band down to watch it together and discuss what they could do to improve the show for the audience - the guitarist might then understand how bad these big gaps make the band look, and that he is being a massive twat by insisting on doing things the way he is doing them atm.
Wanting to be in tune is being a massive twat now? -
Learn backwards. Learn the last part of a piece first; then the bit before it; and so on. That way you're always going from hard stuff to easy, and you don't fall into the trap of never getting to the end.
This this this this this. Best thing I ever learned as a musician.

Guitarist - retuning when putting a capo on...
uncle psychosis replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
... and tuning again when taking the capo back off! I've never seen anyone do this before and it's creating huge gaps between the songs it effects. I'm personally of the opinion that gaps between songs should be at a minimum in all respects. Tuning should almost go unnoticed by an audience, they want to hear music. ?
You are right about the tuning and about gaps between songs, but using a capo can indeed put a guitar out of tune. There are a few things you can do to help mitigate it but sometimes it can't be helped. -
Returning a bass to Thomann - cost?
uncle psychosis replied to uncle psychosis's topic in General Discussion
I've seen a few bits on Thomann I'd like to try. Not expensive, and more guitar related, but has anyone had issues returning items? Cheers
I bought a bass from them (the bass in question when I started this thread). The first one that came had some QC issues. I sent them an email saying "what do we do" and they immediately sent me a pre-paid postage label and told me what I needed to do to return the item. When they received it they processed it and shipped me a replacement within 24 hours. Absolutely impeccable no quibble, no hassle service. They'll get repeat business from me. -
3mm Nylon Big Stubbies for me. Thick plectrums just feel nicer on bass.
Is the bass playing slot job meeting Gender Equality rules each time there is an opening in that band ?
Boring serious answer: They need a female vocal for loads of their material.

Inspired by this thread I finally checked them out and sadly I'm going to be the party pooper. I want to like them, I like the idea of them, but once I got past the novelty of "ooh, thats a bass making that sound" the actual music doesn't do much for me. Ahh well, there's lots of other bands out there I do like

Sold Mike my Hartke Bass Attack. Paid quickly, friendly communications, no hassles at all. Top stuff, thanks again Mike

Match the bassist to the band quiz
uncle psychosis replied to bartelby's topic in General Discussion
I got 10/10 but there was a couple I wouldn't have got had they not been multiple choice. -
On the other hand , if I make an enquiry about an item , this does not mean I have agreed to buy it. Many of the listings are woefully lacking in details / pictures / location / delivery or collection , can these people also be included in the " time wasters " population .
I tend to just skip those items. If a seller can't be bothered to post some pictures and some basic info then I doubt they'll be bothered to post it to me quickly or to pack it safely either.

Thanks, very helpful Now to justify spending £40 on batteries to the boss
-
I always use the high capacity Eneloop batteries, and find they do a great job.
I googled these and they sound interesting. Amazon lists hundreds of different versions/sellers though. Do you have any specific recommendations for which ones to order?
-
Thanks guys. Sounds like it would easily cope with short sets then. Good to know!
I did 4 gigs with mine on batteries. No issues with it running down.
Wow. Thats a lot longer than I expected. How are you using yours? I'm expecting to use it live with two of the slots "always on" (an amp sim and probably a compressor) with the other slot being switched on and off (probably with drive)
-
Hey folks I've got a B3 and I like it a lot. Have any of you used it on batteries and if so how long did it last? Cheers
I have one of them and I quite like it, but then I got the Neotech Mega Bass Strap which was more comfy and didn't have the buckle issue
I also have a neotech and its brilliant.
Every amp colours the sound in different ways irrespective of where the tone knobs are set. If they didn't then we'd all be using the same make of amp.
This. I *always* start with the amp "flat" and then tweak it until it sounds good. I have no preconceptions about boosted mids or whatever, what works one one amp in one room with one band won't work in another, on another, with another.
We would drain them, let them dry, assisted with hairdryers, and clean the circuit boards with a toothbrush and meths. Dry your stuff out, and scrub any residue with a toothbrush and meths. Dry 'em again; repeat until clean. Spray KF F2 (contact cleaner for pots...) into any pots or switches. Dry again and try your luck. Unless it was really not your day, I'd say they'll work again, but their resale value would be quite reduces, as any leftover gunk could cause intermittent niggly problems later.
This would have been my advice.

Some generic pedal types that spring to mind are : Bitcrushers Harmonisers Specific pedals: Zvex Machine (this is a fuzz/distortion but a very unique one) Earthquaker Devices Rainbow Machine (this is a combination of lots of things which makes it sound pretty unique). Your "normal" list is also missing EQ, tremolo, and delay, and "whammy" should probably be called "pitch shifting" to make it more generic.
-
Wouldn't an EQ do what you want?

I love that. My wife is really good at decoupage, I've been half thinking about doing something similar for a while...

One of the best things about Fenders/Squiers is that pretty much every music shop on the planet now has a reasonable selection of both. Get out there and try loads, one will speak to you

"when a tone pot dies" sounds like a good name for a Jazz ballad
