1. Hey folks I'm teaching myself to play fingerstyle (I also play with a pick). One thing that is holding me back is that one of my plucking fingers is more dominant than the other. So rather than alternating between them I tend to use one a lot more than the other. Anyone got any good exercises for trying to sort this out and get used to alternating them?
 2.
This. Some people will try and convince you that you dont actually NEED a bitcrusher, but dont listen to them.
3.
I don't get this and I would always have the bass tuned normally for transit. If you loosen the strings then the tension of the truss rod is no longer balanced by the string tension and I can't see how that is in any way advantageous.
Its because on *some* guitars---with a steep headstock angle---having the strings at full tension can make it (the headstock) more likely to snap. I suspect its more likely to be a problem with Gibson style 6-strings like Les Pauls and SGs that have notoriously fragile headstocks. Even then I'd probably only loosen them a step or two. Most bass guitars would be OK I reckon.
 4.
All basses are not equal and people like Thomann have some amazingly cheap deals on certain gear, but along with that cheapness goes a complete lack of care for you as a customer (dare I say it, but as a Brit you probably aren't going to be top of the list for decent customer service from them).
I'm British and had absolutely impeccable customer service from Thomann when I had issues with a purchase. They went above and beyond what I expected. In contrast, the last time I bought something from a UK based company that developed a problem they truly did not give a s**t. I would very, very happily use Thomann again.
 5.
Hi as stated in the listing ...If your interested in Brands I would personally recommend that you buy a bass made from similar wood with a similar sound with an expensive logo and price tag on it maybe a fender. if you can spare over a grand!!!
Alternatively you could buy an identical bass made from identical wood and with an identical sound with a cheap logo on the headstock and a price tag of about 50% less, maybe a Harley Benton. If you can spare a ton!!!!
 6.
Probably a hard core of two or three hundred regular contributors, plus about ten times that who lurk, I'm guessing. If thousands upon thousands of members contributed regularly it would be like Talkbass which is chaotic and unwieldy, in my humble opinion!
^ This. I find that Talkbass has some really interesting stuff on it but it moves so quickly that its very, very easy to miss things.
 7.
Well the guy selling it replied, see below
What a depressing level of BS from the guy. The best thing I'll say about it is that its nice to see some "real world" photos of that model. Looks pretty sweet.
 8.
Build thread is here. Lete know if you want anymore info http://basschat.co.u...26#entry1974426
Thanks! Really is lovely. Have you received it yet? Bet you can't wait!

A portion of my income goes to charidee - but I don't like to talk about it, of course.
Reading about this earlier on another site I think some of the money is going to the charity and some of it is going directly to Claypool's nephew who has leukemia. I doubt Les Claypool is pocketing the proceeds.
 10.
Hey, thanks for the nice post. That's a great idea, sadly it hasn't worked out for me. I tried keyboard but the position causes issues, I tried lap steel but that didn't work out. I am lucky though that I have a lovely old parlour acoustic which is tiny but sounds awesome. I play that in little bursts at times.
Sorry to hear that. There's always less conventional things like programmable synths or very unusual things like theremins that don't require physical touch to operate. I guess it depends on how much you're tied to playing stringed instruments---I know I would find it hard to give up playing bass. All the best!
 11.
www.tagboardeffects.blogspot.com looks a lot like this: If you're using an LM741 opamp instead of the 308 then you can take the 30pf cap out, as the 741 has one built in.
Thanks! What do the blue circles on the links/cuts diagram mean? Never seen that before.
 12.
Why not just turn it off?
Why bother turning it off when flight mode does essentially the same thing but quicker?
 13.
The Pixies are bloody awful in their own right, regardless of my superiority ( thanks for acknowledging that, by the way, your humility is a lesson to me ) . I couldn't care less what music you like or don't. You can listen to Run Rig as far as I am concerned but just because you like something, it doesn't make it good.
You're doing a great impression of someone that doesn't care. Most teenagers have a more mature attitude towards music they don't like than the one you're displaying here. I'm actually embarrassed on your behalf reading back some of your posts in this thread
 14.
I haven't heard of half of the players Dingus is spouting about but I know every player I met with similar views against anyone they didn't enjoy listening too was a terrible player themselves, not in their own opinion obviously, just sayin'
Dingus doesn't deal in opinions Pete. Just the facts.
 15.
What is implicit in what you say in your previous post is that lack of musical ability is compensated for by great songwriting skills. The Pixes have neither musical ability or songwriting skills. It's just another average indie band making a racket. The rest is sophistry. They are a one-song band , and that monkey went to heaven a long, long time ago. I know because I was there at the time.
Here was me labouring under the impression that I liked the Pixies. Now of course I bow down to your superior artistic values and realise that in fact I don't like them at all. In fact, no one likes them and they definitely haven't written any songs that have influenced an entire generation of musicians. Please share the master list of worthy bands please, I'd like to know which of my cds I can keep and which ones I'll have to get rid of.
 16.
The point is that my favourite female bass players are the ones that play bass the best, just the same as the male bass players I like . The rest is superfluous.
And My favourite bass players are the ones who write songs I like the most. Like I said. Anyway, how do you define "the best" in terms of playing bass? Is Marcus Miller "the best" in comparison to Geddy Lee? Is James Jamerson "the best" in comparison to Paul Chambers? At somepoint it has to become about whose music you prefer.
They are just another average indie band that got lucky and captured peoples imagination at a particular time , and they have traded on that initial success ever since. They are not a talented band, despite their longevity.
You just described 99% of successful rock/pop bands.
You seem to equate lack of technical ability with some automatic compensation of good taste and populist appeal. That is completely erroneous.
Nonsense, thats not what I said at all. What I said was that you don't have to be a great player to write great songs. Its quite clear that you really don't understand the influence of the Pixies. Their songs---not their attitude or ability---is what people were (and are) inspired by.
 17.
Why is that a good thing? Why should I celebrate or be thankful for that? Why do you see that as some kind of vindication for Kim Deal's lack of ability? Does the world really need more inept bass players? I want less players inspired by Kim Deal and her ilk, not more.
You said she wasn't inspirational. She's inspired a lot of people whether you like it or not. Deal with it. It must be strange to live in a place where music is only enjoyable if it's difficult to play.
 18.
There are, of course, lots of highly accomplished women bassists - Carole Kaye, Gail Ann Dorsey, Kim Clarke, Me'Sell, Julie Slick and Esperanza Spalding , to name but a few, are all brilliant players who I admire and enjoy . But a lot of the other names being touted here are not good bass players . In fact, some of them are bloody awful. It would be extremely patronizing to pretend otherwise because they are women . Whatever appeals to folks about them, it is not the musicality of their bass playing. Enjoy whatever you please and if you like her music then good for you , but don't try and tell me that Kim Deal is a great and inspirational bass player, because she has forged a terrific career out of being a lousy bass player. That is her most notable achievement . She and others like her are music personalities rather than a skilled musicians.
I absolutely guarantee you that Kim Deal has inspired far more people to take up bass than at least five of the other bassists you name. The thread is "favourite" female bassist. Not "best" female bassist. If you asked me to name my favourite male bass players I doubt any of the names I'd mention would blow anyone away with technical ability. However, for many of us the single most important aspect of musicality is songwriting. Having chops is brilliant but for me writing killer songs is where its at. Kim Deal may well be a "lousy" bass player but hundreds of thousands of people (if not millions) could sing you the bassline to dozens of Pixies songs. Lines don't have to be technically difficult to be brilliant.
 19. Jose the guitarist in my band may be after one of these. I'll get in touch with him and let you know.
 20. Wow. One of the best basses I've ever seen here on BC. Absolutely love it. Can we have some more info about it?
 21.
This is one of the first of the grabber basses, the one with the sliding pickup, it's in very good condition and is a 76 model, the gibson logo is part worn that's because it's a decal and easy to rub off, still it's a genuine and original bass in the light wood finish, will come with a gig bag if I can find one wide enough, postage is free. I would put some pic,s on if I knew how!
Upload the photos to somewhere like Photobucket. Instructions are here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/191620-how-to-add-a-picture-to-your-post/
 22. I hated the DC-9 I had. Horrible sounding thing. If you're looking for a cheap compressor I'd recommend the Marshall ED-1. The LMB-3 and its various clones are good too.
 23. Hey man, that sounds really rubbish. I know you weren't looking for sympathy but you definitely have mine. Hope you can get sorted out! One thing to remember is that other instruments are available! I've always thought of myself as someone who makes music and happens to play bass, not as a bass player who makes music. Making a racket is more important than what instrument you use! Perhaps if bass playing has become physically difficult there might be something else you are able to play?
 24. Hey folks I've got a B3 that I've been mainly using as a practice tool. I've got it plugged into a small mixer via the balanced out connector for headphone practice and playing along to records. I recently bought a G&L M-2000 and the output from this bass is really hot. Much, much hotter than any of my other basses. My mixer is clipping because the signal is way too loud, even with all of the effects on the B3 off. I'm a bit of a dunce at these things, whats the best way to adjust things? Turn down the gain on the mixer channel? Turn down the global B3 level? Turn down the patch level? If it makes any difference I'd like to use the same settings when I plug into an amp or DI straight to the PA.
 25. I love the finish but other than that...no thanks.
