1. Hi GB.. are you sure they're 10"? I feel sure they're 8s, and the 'missing' panel was a 100W power amp.. I have a complete one that I can't seem to part with 'cos it's so useful.. even done the odd small gig on it!
2.
Then again, I wasn't fashionable in 1988 either.
Yup, I know that one!
3. I have the AH250SMX, got it new in about '93. Belting - I keep looking around, as you do, but I can get my sound with the TE so no need to change. I use it through a EA 1x12 with tweeter, sounds superb. Used to have various other cabs, always sounded great. By reputation, all the English made ones are well worth getting.. well built and repairable. I think the rep slipped after the Gibson takeover, but I have no direct experience of those or later.
4.
I've got a fretless that was given to me by another bassist which I keep 'just in case' I'm ever called up and asked to play a fretless specifically, but can't see it ever getting used outside my living room.
I've got a 'couple' of fretted basses which I keep 'just in case' I'm ever...
5.
The situations in which I can play fretless are all created by myself... I bring a fretless to gigs or studio-sessions without being asked for because otherwise no one would ask. As it is said above : everything which is sometimes adventurous like slap or fretless has been banned and I miss the spirit of the eighties, the best time ever for electric bass.
Likewise.. I almost exclusively play fretless, so I take a fretless to gigs. Never been a problem - fretless isn't ALL slidy slidy!
6. Ibanez BTB have 35" scale and tend to be rather good, even the basic ones which often crop up for a song. I've seen both new and used crop up in your budget range. I have a 4 string 600 series with ash body (still 35" scale). Quite remarkable, really!
7. Just found this thread.. this afternoon's gigging lex to my CXL110 main driver failing. Sod's Law.. I just replaced the tweeter diaphragm one of the CXL112s. John at EA was really helpful in the first case, so I'll drop him a line first to see if the options are still the same. The 110 was my first EA cab bought used about 9 or 10 years ago and well gigged since, so I don't feel hard done by.
8. By way of a trial, pop on a guitar capo at fret 1 or 2 and downtune.. if it feels good but rattles, go up a gauge in strings. If it doesn't work out you have lost nothing.
9.
A beauty. String spacing?
That's a Schaller 2000 bridge with fully adjustable width, down to about 15mm.
10. I would have thought, judging by BTB series which I've looked at a fair load, that they would be the same except the 300 bolt-on neck and the 370 through-neck.
11. Ah yes, that'll be it; I was on my phone!
12.
With your thumb on the centre of the hump on the back of the neck, you can use that as a pivot point and move your fingers up and down the neck and get a longer reach. With your thumb over the top of the neck, as shown here, anyone will struggle
Quite so.. if you've never tried this it can be surprising how much extra reach you gain!
13. Can't see it. . Blocked on copyright grounds!
14. Just tried it.. I think I have pretty average size hands, but I do play DB as well. 1-4 I just stretch, use 4th finger! I also, depending on the line and where I'm going next, go E2-E6 shift then A4 is no stretch at all.
15. Have you tried getting longer grub screws for a standard one? Cheaper and easier ..
16. EMG do a couple of things.. the BTC is a 2-band with a single stacked knob, and the EXB is an all-in-one on a single knob. I have their BTS on an Overwater J with Bartolini pickups. http://www.emgpickups.com/accessories/bass-accessories.html
17. I've looked longingly at this fretted J5.. if I was in the market for such a bass it would have been mine weeks ago! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/229012-overwater-j5-natural-24-fret-now-with-video-clip/page__p__2440096__hl__overwater__fromsearch__1#entry2440096
18. I have a couple of their fretless 5ers..I tried many 'nice' things over the years but a |Progress III was the first thing to really make my insides jump! The Progress III is, as some have said, pretty modern sounding. Could the name hold a clue? Versatile, mind.. put black nylons on there and it's the closest I've had to an EUB tone from a bass guitar. The EQ section is powerful in a very musical way. Often grab this one for more acoustic-type gigs. The Jazz - Swamp Ash body - is a monster! A heavy bass, but excellently balanced once on the strap. Punchy as you like, came with an East pre which was amazingly good but just had toooo many options so I took it down to an EMG BTS with passive/active switch. This bass is my go-to for the more rocky end of the spectrum. I think you could say I like them! Edit, forgotten comment: Neither of mine has any of the deluxe options, but they have a certain quality about them.. nice pieces of wood put together just-so by folks who really know what they're doing.
19.
I've got one of these on my Hartke bass. Unnecessarily complicated and I can't really see how it's any kind of improvement over the original Schaller 3-D bridge.
It's not that complicated really, and each string pulls straight even at maximum adjustment. To adjust the rollers on the 3D you still have to slacken the string.
20. How about the Orchestral Solo set? Since they're designed to be tuned a tone up, tuning to EADG will drop the tension somewhat. Eminently bowable.
21.
.... Best P Bass I have ever had. .... http://www.ebay.co.u...016.m2516.l5255
Says it all, really.. if it was that good it's worth the money, surely?
22.
I peed in the sink once. I was very drunk at the time. It had washing-up in it.
I hope you mean the sink!
23.
I poured orange juice on my cereal once.
I went through a phase of using OJ instead of milk on cereals about 20 years back, tasted great!
24. “As many truths as men. Occasionally, I glimpse a truer Truth, hiding in imperfect simulacrums of itself, but as I approach, it bestirs itself & moves deeper into the thorny swamp of dissent.” David Mitchell The thing with 'science' is that even that keeps changing, and contains many anomalies. Anyone ever tried a piezo pickup (impedance a few Megohms) into an unbuffered amp input, which is expecting an impedance of a few thousand Ohms? According to science it's wrong, and should cause problems. My own experience is that sometimes it works fine, sometimes not. If it sounds the way you want to sound, just relax!
