Selling on Basschat, a suggestion to the MODs
hubrad replied to bassface2k10's topic in General Discussion
Following my previous post, I've been looking more closely at tags.. in the first couple of pages, only a handful of sellers are even using them. However, hovering over a tag brings up a little sign which says 'Find more content tagged 'xxx''. Even clicking on some definite repeats, such as 'Fender', 'Overwater' and '5 string', I get a page which tells me that no restults are found. Are the tags actually active at all? On a quick read down these first couple of pages I see some obvious ones (see above) getting repeated use, but then our combined creativity takes over.. there's one, which is totally valid, tagged as F bass Fretless Alain Caron.. as I say a valid tag, but if the next person to be selling such a thing changes one letter or space while trying to advertise theirs it will be a different specific tag. This is why I suggested a template of tags, from which one might choose by brand, colour, number of strings etc. Of course the tags actually have to be active for this to work, but then the default position if that the whole BFS section shows. After that we are free to click on a tag of choice if we wish to narrow our search. When it comes to listing our BFS, it's up to the seller.. want to make your bass more visible in a more specific search? Use tags. Just want to fire it up in the BFS section? Don't bother. -
Selling on Basschat, a suggestion to the MODs
hubrad replied to bassface2k10's topic in General Discussion
moving on.. When you list something for sale, you can put a number of tags in as well.. how does the searching for tags thing work? It strikes me that tags could actually be the way of putting your bass in any categories you fancy, then it's down to the browser or buyer as to whether they just want to look across the whole section or by tag. At the mo, I believe we can tag as we wish; perhaps a preset list of tags could be used by way of subdivisions? This is already part of the site software, so the onus is on us to learn (maybe a masterclass in the offing?) how to use it to its full potential before worrying about new (and time-consuming and expensive!) software. -

My Trace head used to do this (not mega-heavy, but deffo not light either) until I changed the hard plastic feet to much better grippy rubber ones. Problem solved! :-)
What's the budget? I think you could be looking at the Ibanez BTB675 or maybe the Peavey Grind 5, Ibanez is just under 17mm not sure about the spacing on the Peavey. Another option might be the SRFF805. Until you mentioned the spacing, I was going to say forget about neck-through and look for an MTD Kingston. I've just picked one up from the forum and the low B is immense!
Sadly, the BTB series 5ers are 19mm spacing according to all their blurb. If you find something which is good in all but the string spacing, and it has a surface-mount bridge (rather than the BTB routed-in saddles) then a replacement bridge is dead easy. I have a few things with the Schaller 2000, both 4 and 5 string - adjustable from about 15.5mm upwards. :-) http://basschat.co.uk/topic/92918-schaller-2000-bridge-ft-ill-keep-it/

I'd say go for it if you're up for an experiment! Look at pics on #32 here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/44673-ibanez-roadster-megacustom/page__hl__ibanez%20roadster Mine was 4-string headed when I bought it!

Fretless GAS - should I step away from the Internet?
hubrad replied to lowdowner's topic in General Discussion
Fretless.. just go for it! You'll either never look back or not take to it, but at least you'll know. Me? Played a fretless first, and I'm still in love! :-) -
I love these pickups.. got emgs in a couple of basses. Not oldschool, which is not to everyone's taste. The DC is fixed dual coil side by side. If you want switchable you need the TW ones.. http://www.emgpickups.com/bass/extended-series/5-string/40tw.html I've thought about these, but really I've never actually needed them. I particularly like the DC and P models.. make sure to get the P for the right number of strings!

On the bright side, if you're going along thinking it's going to be a crappy night, you could come away more pleased with the outcome.. Personally I don't like those kinda gigs any more, and there has to be a verry convincing reason for doing such a one, even if it's just 'first gig, so we'll record it and analyse for tightening up purposes'.
Solid as a rock, heavy and brutish but some great sounds. I found I only ever used mine one pickup at a time though, it sounded too 'hollow' with both on at once for me.
Isn't that out-of-phase? IIRC when I had one it had a toggle phase switch. Very interesting tone control.. rather than just a treble bleed, it went from full tone single coil to treble-bled humbucker (or vice-versa - long time ago!). I got rid of the capacitors on mine, as those pickups sounded great either way full tone.

When you get compliments on your playing
hubrad replied to anaxcrosswords's topic in General Discussion
It took me ages to come to terms with it. It eventually sunk in that it wasn't all end-of-the-night drunks who will say anything just to have been seen talking to the band! If I keep getting re-bookings, I must be doing something right for somebody; if I'm enjoying it too, then that's all grand! :-) There's still far too many folks that I consider well ahead of me, so I'm not going to get conceited about it. -
Sadly, as it says on the tin. Not mine, but Chris Kelly in Otley. From his Facebook post: A plea to everyone. I have had my bass guitar and Amp head stolen from my car. It was parked outside my home in Otley at the time. These items are very valuable both to me on a personal level but also in terms of their resale value. The guitar is an American 1997 Fender Jazz bass. The amp head is an Ashdown Mag 300. The thief may well have looked to local music traders in order to get money for these items. The amp head has a cracked/broken dial on the front. The bass guitar has some small dents on the headstock as you can see from the pictures. It also has a distinctive red marbled scratch plate which was fitted after purchase. If you come across these items please contact me on 07837985126 or West Yorkshire Police using the crime number 142379. Thank you. Pics also in the post: https://www.facebook.com/chris.kelly.338658

Most of our amps only actually use a couple of amps (a glance at the back of your combo will tell you the power consumption, then divide by 240), but I mostly carry the full 13A cable ones so they can be used on pretty much anything. If buying new, the price difference is minimal, so you might as well go for 13A unless only the light ones are available. Yer actual kettle lead is for hot use, and has a notch so you can't put an amp lead into a kettle and melt the thing.

Excellent post! Is a punk band allowed to tell the bass player he/she's too loud?

I've got both 4s and 5s.. generally I'll go for the 5s, but as I think of them as different, not just a larger and smaller version of the same thing, I can justify owning TWICE AS MANY BASSES! Win-win!

Prob just need another turn or two round the post. That or less vaseline on the strings..
I've done this with my Fender JB. It works just fine, but changing the battery is a real pain.
I have one bass with a pair of EMG-35s and the active blend circuit.. I usually end up changing the batteries (I run them on 18V) when I really can't remember the last time I did it, so probably 18 months or more! :-) To OP.. you could try and drop one or two PP3 batteries in the control cavity, and if that goes easily you'll have no problem doing the pickup swap. They even have a single stacked pot 2-band EQ if you really want to push the boat out.

If it's a 5-string, also check the width.. I have an Overwater J series with Bartolinis which are a 5-string model hence noticeably wider than normal 4s. As J pickups have side lugs, you can't put a 4 in a 5 slot even if the pickup aperture would permit. Having said that, I love those Barts! Originally teamed up with a John East preamp, that had sooo many possibilities that I swapped it to a 2 band EMG pre and made it active/passive switchable. Still a great range of tones.. I LOVE that bass! In a 4 string slot, EMG are great, as zero9 said.. p'raps more modern sounding, inasmuchas they're clean, noiseless, and the frequency range is that bit broader without losing the character of what they're based on. With something like a J or P bass, there have been so many incarnations that one major step is to decide on what kind of J you're after. Once you get to the decent ranges, they're ALL good!
