  1. Sounds like it could be the fibers of the gut itself that appears as a "winding." What do the ends look like? If they look like translucent rope they're most likely gut. They might be knotted and/or with a loop. If they are finished with a ball end or wire loop and then fine colored silk thread then most likely not. -Jeff
  2. Hey Gang, I'm looking for Innovation string ideas to pair with plain gut G & D. I've been using wound gut but I go through them pretty fast. These will need to have a similar tension to the wound gut (lower than steel but higher than weedwackers.) I tried golden slaps a couple of years ago and liked the tension but the bowability (at least for my skill level) was too diffucult. Slap and pizz were great. I also tried 140B orchestra and they bowed well but the tension was a little much for slap. (I'm coming to the conclusion that string diameter has more to do with slapability than tension for the E & A strings... ie bigger is better.) Opinions?? Rockabillys?? 140H Honey?? -Jeff
  3. Hi Everyone, I'm new to Basschat but I've lurked for awhile. I'll be on a low budget DIY tour in England this summer and am in need of a URB/double bass to rent! The music is a mix of gypsy jazz, blues and various folk/songwriter styles. I have a mic and my own bow but I'm not in a position to bring my bass. Ideally I'd like to rent a decent plywood bass with an adjustable bridge and lower tension or gut strings. Any leads would be appreciated. We arrive in London on June 24th and are flying out sometime the first week or two of August. -Jeff Marty O'Reilly & the Old Soul Orchestra Talkbass - JeffKissell
