You know what they say..." a fool and his money are easily parted" - living proof if people are buying these.

I am almost (but not quite) speechless.

Mmm, tasty, those guys are just so good! Nice bits of wood, put together just so, no need for bling. The quality goes in before the name goes on..

Is it a bad idea to use switch cleaner on a momentary SPST footswitch?

Signal cables are the noticeable ones.. one of my occasional bands was given the opportunity to try Cream cables at a gig (see the Cricketers' link on here: http://www.thedenkeighley.co.uk/Cream%20cable.htm ) and being my usual sceptical self I said I'd give a cable a quick try at soundcheck. A subtle yet appreciable difference, just clearer tone. We all used them, even the mics were on Cream. The frontman was so blown away by the cumulative effect of all the channels being just that bit clearer that he offered to put the cash upfront if we all fancied a cable or two each! We all went for it, and no regrets there whatsoever. These days I automatically reach for those cables, knowing my tone is just that tad better; it's just like the eternal arguments about 'more expensive basses - are they worth it?' or 'how much difference can the wood make?' .. even if nobody else can hear the actual difference, if I'm more confident and 'in the Zone' they'll probably appreciate my playing that bit better. I was once in a studio, where the guy ran a spectrum analyser on my Cream and a 'normal' cable.. on-screen the Cream didn't look anything like as good as t'other, but to my ears.. It stands to reason that even the mains cabling could make a yet more subtle difference, quite possibly not one you would as such hear - I got one of the basic 'Hi-Fi' kettle leads and can't hear the difference, but anything that contributes to the cumulative improvement gets my vote. To anyone who is convinced it's snake-oil - don't fret about it, there's more to worry about in life! To the interested sceptic - get a go one one or more of these things and see what you think. If you hear a difference, then it's your call as to whether you think it's worth the price tag. Some really cool players use dead-basic everything, some use top-notch. Enjoy life!
I do remember once getting a tip (buggered if I can remember where I got it from though so apologies for that), which has served me pretty well over the years when dealing with plugs and cables. Every once in a while it's a good idea to physically unplug permanent cables, spray a bit of WD40 or Switch Cleaner onto a cotton rag, wipe the plugs with it and reinsert them. Used to do about once a year with my studio setup. I found it worked well with my guitar leads too. Can't speak for it's efficacy with mains leads though...
Switch cleaner, yes.. WD40 NO,NO,NO! It's brill on machinery, but for electronics it's more likely to cause problems. Especially don't use it for pots, as it burns (on a very small level, not like e-cigs going off! :-D ) and knacks yer pots!

Bass Player Required For Mature Fun Time Band In Cardiff
Our band, Nearly Dan, had gigs pre-booked in Edinburgh and Glasgow on April 25 and 26. This is an annual jaunt for us. The Friday was sold out, and the Saturday was selling well. On the Thursday before, I started to get an infection in a tooth that had recently been filled. My face started to become swollen. I called my dentist, but the jobsworth receptionist told me I couldn't get in for a check. The next day I was supposed to be picked up at 10.50am. My face was massively swollen, and my eye looked like it had been hit by Mike Tyson. I went to my doctor, expecting her to give me a strong antibiotic, but she took one look at me said I needed to go to A & E for emergency treatment. I told her I needed to go to Scotland for gigs, but she said it would not happen. At the hospital they said I needed to have the tooth out and would have to spend the next 24 hours on an intravenous antibiotic drip. I maintained that I'd already missed our minibus and needed to be in Scotland for the gigs. The doctor said: 'Do you value your health or your gigs?' I asked if there was any alternative. Against their advice, I agreed to have the tooth removed and a intravenous shot of antibiotics, plus a course of strong antibiotic tablets to take. Thanks to my girlfriend, I made a train that got me to Edinburgh just in time, at a cost of £91.50. The gigs were great and I'm now on the mend. What I ask is: Would you have done the same thing and risked your health for a gig? What lengths have you gone to in order to let ensure the show must go on?
Tough call.. it all worked out, so well done! Sometimes such an infection can actually spread further, so there's always a risk.. if such a thing goes pear-shaped you're in hospital, and no messing. Meanwhile, my first thought was that if your dentist's couldn't get you in a pain slot - especially where the tooth had recently been filled - you really need to change your dentist!

Decently made Wiring Harnesses, Are they worth it?
hubrad replied to Shockwave's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yup, go for the more reliable option. Also, if you're paying someone to make a harness up for you, you'll be paying the same for their time so you may as well get the more rliable pots etc and only pay once for the labour. I worked a stand at a guitar show a few years ago.. chap came up and looked at Strat switches. We had decent quality Japanese ones, at the time about 5 or 6 quid (still inexpensive compared to Switchcraft). 'I'm not paying that much for a switch; I'll only pay 2 pounds because I get through at least 3 a year.' Well, Duuhh! -

+1 for having an experiment yourself.. you either learn how this stuff works (as Woodinblack says, pretty straightforward stuff once you get the hang of it) or you realise what you pay others to do! This book is brill.. taught me all the basics I needed to get down and dirty with my guitars! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Guitar-Electronics-for-Musicians-by-Donald-Brosnac-Paperback-1983-/331165569559?pt=Non_Fiction&hash=item4d1b019217 -
Decently made Wiring Harnesses, Are they worth it?
hubrad replied to Shockwave's topic in Repairs and Technical
Personally, I'd replace the pickups first, but it stands to reason that if every part of your signal path is as good as possible then the cumulative effect of even the most subtle improvements is a way better sound. As for any specific player's tone, Scott Devine's vid on tone has a very valid point to make.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vUNUo3TbyI -
and a lot of hygienically Challenged people!
Sat next to a local one of those on a bus the other week. 35 minutes bus journey. Had to wash all my clothes, take a shower and wash the INSIDE of my nose to get rid of the whiff! Awakes my inner snob..

A couple of drops of super glue, job done. It seeks its way into gaps, so if you go steady it'll be an invisible repair.

I'm skint and in debt, a perfect time to buy a Fender Jazz right?
hubrad replied to col.decker's topic in Bass Guitars
Martin Lewis once said that if credit cards were called, much more accurately, debt cards then most likely far fewer people would get into such problems or even take one out in the first place. If you're seriously considering putting yourself in penury, make it count. . No point getting something mass produced; if you really want one of those just save for a while as they'll be on the second hand market (probably on here!) anyway once you can actually afford one. -
To fretless or not to fretless, that is the question!
hubrad replied to Damonjames's topic in Bass Guitars
As Steve Bailey said, you don't have to wobble and slide on EVERY note! Take only the fretless on a gig, in the style of Sting, and see what happens. . I said nothing! -
Seymour Duncan P-Rails.. best of both worlds: http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/humbucker/medium-output/prails_shpr1/ I have one in the neck position on a PRS, and it's brilliant in both humbucker and P-90 modes.

I'm probably not alone in getting put off by a lack of track record, but by way of character reference, Dave has been a really good friend of mine for many years. In fact my DB came from him ages ago, after soooo much effort to prise it from his hands! One of the really good guys and a very respected bass player (he'll most likely cringe on reading that bit..). Mr.Bassman also knows him well, I believe. I did get an unplugged go on this bass quite a while ago, and despite it completely lacking a 5th string I do remember thinking it was rather splendid. I'd recommend taking Dave up on the viewing offer - he's also no slouch on the kettle!
This is the best [s]excuse[/s] reason to have another bass in your collection, so yes go out and get another Jazz!
Yup!

The only way to find out is to play one.. if you can really feel the difference, you'll know it's worth the extra money. If you can't feel it, you'll be just as happy with the 1025 without having spent a load more. What's the difference between a Squier and a CS Fender? etc..
