How about a Stereo Memory Man with Hazerai? Loads of weird possibilities with looping too.
Definitely a few nice models, if a bit pricey
If the quality is commensurate that could be a good thing. Interesting range in the eBay shop.

Buttercream and maple - very pretty indeed
Gonna start this now, the next week will see a big change being made to my 5 string Sei Jazz It's currently running a pair of Bart' soap bars through a Bart' pre amp. The pre is 3 band with 2, 3 way switches for coil selection . Into it I am putting, a pair of Nordstrand Humbuckers and an East pre, with a switch added for the side neck LED's. No coil selection switches, no series / par' switches. The p/ups are going in, wired in series. I'll upload a picture of the bass, pre overhaul, later today Tony
Are you putting in 'off the shelf' U-Retro Tony? Peter
I think the only issue that Bilbo has bought up here, is where is the line between a hand-built bass, and a custom built bass. Si
If something is mass produced you join the queue and when your number is called out you take your box from the counter. If something is handmade to order it's usual to be able to influence the process. I think the whole custom thing is a bit of a misnomer. If you asked a good luthier to build something totally unworkable, unreliable or impractical hopefully they'll tell you this. I think Bilbo is partly chucking in a hand grenade and watching the ensuing chaos, a bit of a pompous thing to do perhaps? Maybe I'm totally wrong and it's a serious worthy debate. Maybe Bilbo needs to get out more? I know I do
What I'm trying to say is that some people are happy with whatever partner they meet, while others join a dating agency to find a partner that fits their criteria. Am I making sense here?...or shall I get me coat?
No you make sense Pete Trouble is the woman that I tend to aspire too is usually like a guitar - highly strung!
So, Bilbo, judging from your post, am I right in thinking you wouldn't be very fussy about your women, then?
Ooh, below the belt that one Pete ?

Warmoth P bass with Darkstar pup and ACG pre SOLD
GreeneKing replied to GreeneKing's topic in Basses For Sale
It's got a very wide frequency spectrum (Alex will be along in a minute to use correct terminology). It does 'old school really well and with flats can delivery a real 'thump'. The beauty of the ACG pre-amp is it's versatility and this bass can do dub through to 'tinkle' all with it's flats being active the bass is firmly in the middle of an active output I'd suggest. Nothing too lively. So tonally most varied. -
It'd go with my pillbox hat
A certain Harlot 5-string may become available, but a 62RI would have to enter the equation, too
Hehe, now that's definitely one of the two staying Rich, even if it is just a Fender. I got a good one and I'm keeping hold of it. -
Warmoth P bass with Darkstar pup and ACG pre SOLD
GreeneKing replied to GreeneKing's topic in Basses For Sale
The Warmoth is a 1954 Warmoth P body in Korina with a 21 fret 34" scale Birdseye maple neck. The detailing is very good on this neck. The pickup is a Hammon Engineering Darkstar routed into the P pickup position. I built the bas from parts about 2 years ago. The neck is a Warmoth Jazz profile and has reinforcing rods giving a very stable but not ultra thin neck. http://www.warmoth.com/Bass/P-Bass/54pbass.aspx http://www.warmoth.com/Bass/Necks/StandardNecks.aspx http://www.hammoneng.com/ Bridge is a Gotoh 201 and the tuners are Hipshot Ultralites with a D-tuner. The body is an oiled finish (tung) and is now waxed monthly with Warwick wax. The Neck is finished with the hard drying Tru-Oil gun stock oil. The pre-amp is filter based with one low pass and one high pass filter. The knobs are vol/lp/hp and the low pass has a resonant peak control with a boost on the high pass. Intuitive once you get a feel for how they work. http://www.acguitars.co.uk/News/91/ I'm looking for £500 or thereabouts. Peter -
Well, it's a bit old, a bit worn, and a bit scratched. If the absolutely identical bass had Cort written on the headstock and was 5 yrs old it'd not fetch a comment in a month of Sundays I accept the interesting storyline behind these basses and without a doubt I love the tone of my P but reality vs fantasy? That's just me though, you lot can swoon away - hehe

What's all the hype about 'custom' anyway? It was the way of things in the past. Mass production, with all the units being pretty much identical is a more modern approach. Yes you get consistency, sometimes that isn't a good thing if it consistent mediocrity. The idea of negotiating with a craftsman (or woman) for a bespoke item that utilises the best practice in terms of construction and the added attention to detail that comes from being hand built from carefully selected materials. It's not new, clever or a process in need of rubbishing as something somehow pretentious. Would you decry having a house built this way? Wal's were hand built, the electrics were chosen because someone decided it was a better approach to the more conventional offerings, choice of woods and a visit to the luthier to discuss the instrument were an option. Wood wise Wal's are as spectacular as many so called 'Custom' basses and just as much open to be labelled 'furniture'. There's not that much of a different between this and the works of Shuker, ACG, Sei, and a whole host of bass builders. Peter
Wow, that ex-Entwistle bass looks AMAZING! It could have been the only one out of 3 that he had that didn't have the extra tone control added. Where is it now?
Is it only me that, undoubted rarity value aside, thinks it looks 'okay'? Fascinating tale and I'd love to hear more about your trip Stateside Doc.
That's a flawed argument, GK. If a manufacturer is cutting costs by economies of scale, fine, that applies to all areas of any business. If an independent is not able to do that, you are being charged for every bit of the process (e.g. design, neck profiling etc) so, by definition, they will be making a disproportionately expensive or inferior product, surely. The cost/quality argument is a fragile link to rely on. Of course, a manufacturer will have its budget lines (re: paint covering bad quality wood etc) but, with minimal research, most of us can tell the difference between a Squier and a top fo the range Fender. For me, the quality of an instrument is determined only by what noises it makes. The rest is furniture. If I can't HEAR the quality, it is of no particular importance. And for most of these bespoke custom jobs, I hear nothing that makes me think 'its because its a custom job' or anything that I couldn't hear from a stock Fender etc.
I think a dose of reality is needed. Come to the lake District and compare my considerably cheaper ACG Harlot to my Fender P 62 re-issue. Not just as furniture either.

I agree, I can't see the point. I mean I can spend my money buying an off the peg bass built from non carefully selected woods, produced on a CNC machine, using materials and in a manner to predominantly save money. A bass designed for Mr Average with in house electronics, again to save cost, a one piece neck for the joy of truss rod use, something the same as the next guy. Painted to cover up the flaws and joins in the wood. So what's the point in wasting the same money getting something crafted to your own personal taste, a stiffer laminated neck and fretboard/neck profile tailored to your preference, pickups and electronics to suit your taste, something unique that you personally had a part in creating, something different that suits your sense of self. Something out of the ordinary, not of the masses. Come on Mr Bilbo, you can do better than that surely
