1. I'd agree with Squier option. - the Matt Freeman is brilliant, one just went on eBay for £199 a couple of days back, the Classic Vibe are also meant to be good. Would go down the Squier route as resale will be easier if you don't get on with it, or if you want to do some mods.
2. Given up on Good Times as its invariably met with "Oh, that sounds like Amother One Bites the Dust, can you play that?" Have reverted to I Want Your Love as a funky alternative, Wherever I Lay My Hat for the fretless ((or fretted with chorus) thing, finally for bowel-liquidisation purposes (tone/volume adjusted accordingly) Public Image by the great Mr Wobble.
3. Why not buy a 2EQ Ray and stick a Status neck on there? £700-800 ish for the Ray, £300ish for the neck, much cheaper than a Modulus, better looking and true to Fleas sound any ways?
4. Non nitro lacquer would be a standard polyester or polyurethane lacquer, which are the modern equivalents of nitro-cellulose. This would be the default for most modern instruments. Polyester is harder, glossier than nitrocellulose and is synthetically made, whereas nitrocellulose is naturally derived, and is more compatible with the wood itself, wood being comprised of cellulose-type fibres. Nitrocellulose is also softer and flakes/ages more quickly hence the relic effect, and why most people who try to relic a polyester finish fail, end up stripping it off and applying a nitro finish to relic. The inherent compatibility of nitrocellulose with wood is where you get the 'it lets the wood breathe' thing from. YMMV. Hope this helps.
5. Kennys Music evolved from the old Sound Control stores - think Kenny was an old employee, so they're very well established. I actually bought my first bass - Westone Thunder 1A - from Sound Control in Glasgow way back in 1985. Back on point, the Flea sig does look decent - love a pale finished relic and this appears to be insanely well priced for what if offers. Just know a 2EQ Ray will sound better for Flea stuff tho'....😉
6. Hate hearing anyone else covering Brown Eyed Girl as they invariably screw up or over simplify the bass solo. Spent ages nailing it myself and really gets to me - my wife knows the expression to expect on my face at any function... Apart from that, love playing anything really, but have had a similar crap singer experience to early poster with a Crowded House number where the singer would always flatten out the intro.
7. P bass with flats. Pogues, Waterboys etc all used these and they worked fine. When I played in a similar band many years ago, used an old Westone Thunder with P pickup, did have active on there, but passive mode with tone rolled off worked fine. I'm a huge Ray fan, but think Ps the way to go
8. Smooth deal with John for my Matt Freeman P bass. Fast payment, good comms, no issues. Deal with confidence!
9. Circumstances force reluctant sale, Squier Matt Freeman Precision bass in white. Fitted with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder SPB3 pickup, as also fitted to Fender Nate Mendel and (Herts Bass bash award winning) Mark Hoppus models. Excellent condition, home/studio use only never gigged, only a couple of tiny dings on back which I've tried to capture in light on photo. Comes with new Fender gig bag. Bass in situated in North East Scotland, however can ship at cost in UK. Please feel free to check feedback in my sig. Cheers. 10. Being fortunate enough to own an XL2, and having owned a B2A previously, can confirm that yer genuine article ain't that light owing to the materials and solidity of construction. Always surprises people who pick it up for the first time...
11. Would concur that 2EQ maple is the way to go for the quintessential Ray experience. Needn't be a Classic though, if you don't need flamed maple, strung through back or a 4 figure price tag..there's some good ones on SC just now for around the 800ish mark. They can be had lower than this, just a question of waiting. USA Subs are also a good entry into the 2EQ Ray, 400ish but with textured body finish, rosewood and painted neck and headstock. If these features ain't a showstopper, then Subs are a great shout.
12. Great basses, had an almost identical 88 and it's still the best wooden bass I've ever owned.
13. Wow. The best bargain I've ever seen in all my Basschat years. Set your stopwatches now...
14. Cut and boost with no detent. Probably my favourite ever bass preamp , I always just max the bass, then a wee touch of treble - adjust treble to taste as required. You can also get huge variations in tone between playing over pickup and at edge of neck, probably more so than any other bass IMHO. That's before you start picking. Or slapping of course... You always get folks who max out both, slap it like a poor Flea imitation (usually in music shops) then complain that the Rays a one trick pony. Baws, as we say up here in Scotlandshire....
15. The XL2A which is the active version, didn't come in until later. Mr Cloudburst of this parish has one I believe. I have an XL2 from same year (with a flip down rest), and the pickups are indeed powered but the EQ is a passive, Jazz-type setup with two volumes and tone. Will testify to all the good things said about these.
16. In the modern era, how's about Get Lucky? 'Nard / Chic influences a go go, but probably the most instantly recognisable new bass line of the last 4-5 years or so
17.
Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder in your current P.
+1. Round wounds, pick. Sorted, Alternatively a 2EQ Ray with both tones maxed if you're more a scoopy/slappy kinda guy.
18. Proper. The best colour combination, the best EQ. Wish it wasn't just after Xmas...GLWTS
19. If you want the 70s White maple thing don't be afraid to check out the Squier Matt Freeman. I've owned MIM Ps previously and this blows them out the water, for a seriously good price £396ish new. It's also has a yellow neck tint and lovely rolled edges on fingerboard. I've got one with a SD fitted and it's awesome
20. 89s/90s indie casualty so guys like Laurence Donegan from the Commotions, Les Pattinson from the Bunnymen, and Simon Gallup from The Cure were big learning influences. Also, limited technique (hey never stopped Dee Dee Ramone) but Kim Deal from the Pixies was also stellar. To this day, I cannot pick up a Precision and not knock out a coupla lines of Debaser and/or Gigantic if there's a plectrum lying around.
21. ...and as a fellow XL2 owner can only endorse what CB has said, also the sustain on these is Nigel Tufnell-esque.
22. Love white 70s Precisions, unleashes my inner Paul Simonon/Dee Dee Ramone, and this clearly is a great example of the breed
