1. Cheers mate - Monday morning bump
2. Saturday nights alright for bumping...
3. Yes, have shipped to Germany before. Feedback in my thread from Mr Keeves was for a bass I shipped to Germany http://basschat.co.uk/topic/135944-feedback-for-mattm/page__p__2111318__hl__mattm__fromsearch__1#entry2111318
4. 36 hour, wherever I lay my bump... http://youtu.be/TRjiMN2qJHI
5. For very reluctant sale, my 2011 MusicMan Stingray unlined Pau Ferro fretless in tobacco burst finish with 2EQ preamp. Comes with EBMM hard case. Great condition, home/practise use only, never gigged in my ownership. No dings, buckle rash or any marks. Fitted with roundwounds, and only very very light wear on board, impossible to feel or photograph (I tried). Personal circumstances and the fact I'm not gigging dictate this going on the block. £750 firm plus shipping at cost. Bass situated in Central Scotland, handy for all major motorway networks. Check my feedback thread, particularly on Subs/Rays. Cheers. 6. Learned my trade on one, would buy again as a beginner in a heartbeat
7. Indeed. Struck me that if my bass collection had to genetically reproduce, this is kinda what it'd look like. A SteinRay....
8. I could probably use a Ray in any of the genres you cite without any issues, albeit I'd need to adjust the strap height for metal probably... I would probably get funny looks in a C&W band with a Steinberger but, hey, would love to give it a go (shuffles off to try some root-fifth goodness on XL2.....with leg rest flipped down obviously:))
9.
The greatest bass design of all time.
Agreed. Something you don't appreciate until you've owned one.
10.
I think the 80's were an interesting time for bassists. Hybrid amps, headless basses, exotic materials, effects pedals, string technologies - probably more advances in that one decade than in the previous 50 years and the years after. Some of the ideas have lasted the course, others have fallen by the wayside. Everything was trendy in the 80's. Except me - I've always been an old fart.
I kinda stopped my bass evolution in the 80s as my collection will testify . What kinda annoys me is that things like Steinbergers are seen as 80s fashion/retro when, in fact, they have serious merit as design, construction and playing masterpieces. I'd also agree with the comment that Rays are almost fashion-proof, which is also the sign of a great design. Loved 'em when I first tried in 1985, still love 'em now. Interchangeably suited to funk, disco, rock, indie, country, jazz styles, plus they look cool in the right colour combo.
11.
I've just been watching this and now I've got GAS for a fretless ray. I'm not sure I even know why!! Damn you Basschat! http://youtu.be/TRjiMN2qJHI
Yeah, I bought my fretless Ray from a Pino fan, this ain't going to help the GAS I'm afraid.. 12.
Be aware that the sound will change - much brighter and more edge. Nice, but different. On a Wal I'd be thinking new ebony board (not by Wal necessarily) if I loved the sound of that bass. On a side note, in the early days Wal used a wood called something that sounded like parrot sh*t (as Pete called it) some form of South American hardwood similar to the stuff they use for bow making. Looks like rosewood but a lot tougher. A friend has an old ProIIE fretless with this, and it is the best sounding fretless I've ever heard - a real woody growl. I don't think they used it much, as it was hard to find.
Pau Ferro? Standard on newish MusicMan fretless, my 2011 Ray has it. Not totally wear-proof but somewhere between rosewood and ebony hardness-wise from memory?
13.
Which bit ? The introducton ? i'd wager that's Robert Smith on a Fender VI - most of the higher-register bass parts on Cure songs are. Gallup sometime plays them live on the bass IIRC.
Yup. Allegedly Hookys mother was listening to the radio when Inbetween Days came on and thought it was him playing. The high doubled strings bit could be done on a standard 4 string or a VI, the aforementioned Orange vid has Gallup playing it on his 'Ray, with Smith sporting an acoustic as I recall. A Forest - awesome, particularly live...
14. Legend has it Hooky was none too pleased at Gallup being 'heavily influenced' by him on Inbetween Days. He was one of my influences when I started out, and one of the reasons I've owned a black 'Ray in my time. Still love the Cure In Orange, one of my fave live vids.
15. Flats deffo, legend has it that he used the strings which were fitted at the factory for many years without changing them. Dead flats then. 2EQ Ray, max the bass, treble just on a wee nadge, this will give a full round non-scooped sound a la 'Nard. A lotta folks try a Ray, max out both then moan about scooped one trick ponies.....
16. No. Get an electro acoustic bass plus small amp if you want that look, alternatively an electric plus small amp. Mine was an ash-bodied Westone with a P pickup so look and sound weren't too bad. A natural P, Jazz or Ray depending on preference would be a decent shout - was a lovely ash Japanense P just sold on the For Sale board.
17. FWIW I used to play bass in such a combo many moons ago, acoustic bass doesn't cut it particularly over a box and fiddle. I used an electric bass plus a small 30W practise combo, worked well. You could go with an electro acoustic bass, and take the amp for louder number just in case.
18. I have a 30 year old 1984 Steinberger XL2 sans truss rod, setup and relief are perfection. I would say its probably what you'd call over-engineered construction wise, not necessarily a bad thing.
19. 'Ray for me all day long. Just an immediate, highly versatile sound and great look. Don't mind Ps, have owned an MIM in my time, and love the look of white and black ones with maple (JJB, Paul Simonon stylee) but find them a wee bit too restrictive and one dimensional sound wise. I'd have 2EQ flavour by choice, as I like the simplicity, but a 3EQ is great for tweaking mids when needed, had this on an old fretless Ray of mine and loved it.
20. Countour (doesn't worry me but some folks prefer), natural neck finishes and headstock facing (some folks, don't like black paint) and nicer body finishes/scratchplate (if you don't dig Artex-stylee bodies and diamondplate - latter is easily replaced) Sound and playability, proverbial fleas baw-hair as we say north of the border....
21. I have a fretless 2EQ Ray, and its gorgeous - see anything by Mr Palladino for an example. Think the main difference between the Sterling and Ray is the slimmer neck, different pickup magnets (one is ceramic, the other alnico - think the Sterling has a slightly more agressive sound) and Sterling also has serial/parallel switching for variety. Ray is parallel by default, serial has a wee bit more cojones. Serial is also deployed in the legendary US SUB. The magnet material also varied in 5 string Rays versus 4 stringers for a while, which could explain the previous posters disparity above.
22. Thanks for all the interest guys, now sold.
23. Actually, thinking about it, I'd be ideal material for an 80s tribute given the collection....
