After much deliberation and a recent career change, have came to the conclusion that I cant justify having 4 figures worth of bass sitting in a rack only getting played on occaisionally. Therefore for reluctant sale is my 1985 serial number 2669 (which dates to April 1985 according to steinberger world.com) Steinberger XL2 bass made in the Newburgh facility. I would describe condition as 'good' with the following plus points:

Electronics, neck, frets all in excellent working condition, very little fret wear, zero neck issues as you'd expect.

Legrest (one of first few models with flip rest) attached and fully functional

Original battery cover present and correct (these normally go missing)

Original pivot plate attached and working.

Front plate/logo in very good condition - only a wee nibble out of bottom corner (pictured)

Original Steinberger gigbag - bit tatty but still functional.
Non-good points:

Some buckle rash/scratches on back (pictured)

Thumb-sized scratch on back of neck at 15th fret - very rarely venture up dusty end so has never really bothered me.

Small chip out of gel coat near serial number on back of bass

General small light scratches/marks
The gel coat chip and the scratch could be repaired using standard polyester gel coat repair kits for fibreglass boats - Steinberger made these basses using the gel coat to line the moulds with carbon composite then applied to form the main body and neck. The gel coat could then be buffed to a gloss finish. Places like www.headlessusa.com show some of these repairs on their site. Owing the the relatively minor nature, I've never bothered.

Price is £1300 which is hopefully fair - have seen recent better condition transitional examples listed on here for £1700, poorer condition US ones are listing on eBay for about £1700ish also, Japan is just stupid-o-clock. Can post in UK - will be well packaged - please check my feedback. Bass is located in Central Scotland handy for all major motorway networks. Pics below. Cheers.

GLWTS

These are great basses and someone will get a great bargain as I'd be looking £2k for my (admittedly near mint) XL2A.

So many plusses:
- small and easy to transport
- immune to humidity
- tuning keys don't get knocked around - stays in tune indefinitely
- great fat sound
- boomerang strap pivoted at centre of gravity means you can play all night without noticing

Bump for the weekend and now reduced to £1300 shipped in UK. Few new pics showing original Steinberger gigbag, plus back of bass with boomerang pivot in good nick :

And original, listing corrected - rechecking Steinbergerworld.com, I actually made a typo when I did the listing and bass dates to April 1985. Finally, just for interest, link to interesting article with Tim Commerford of RATM who's now using Steinbergers exclusively for his side project - most famous for being Mr 2EQ Ray then Jazz then back to Ray recently in RATM

Midweek bump. Now on the Bay but would prefer to deal with a fellow bass enthusiast via here. Just to answer a couple of queries this is the XL2 not the XL2A so it's controls are VVT, identical to a Jazz bass. Neck width also similar to jazz but deeper - Deep D as opposed to C type section - I'm normally a 40mm+ kinda guy but have no issues with this owing to depth.
