  1. I had the same advice from a teacher in a guitar workshop… he described it as “always heading towards success”
  2. Not a gig, but related. I had a solo open mic spot about 8 years ago. I felt I hadn't practised the vocals at full volume enough (I can't do it much at home) so decided I would stop off in the car park of a disused sports centre in Luton and have a run through in the car. So I parked up, got the acoustic out of the boot and got in the back seat. I played though the songs a few times, when I became aware that there was now a police car parked on the other side of the car park… and that they seemed to be observing me. I carried on, thinking best to act innocent. The male officer started to walk over . I carried on playing. He had a real serious look on his face until he got a few feet from the car, then he started kind-of laughing. He was laughing because he could see the guitar. It transpired that up to now they could only see the movement of my strumming arm, and thought I was entertaining myself in quite a different way. I'm assuming they had some kind of tip-off as it would be too much co-incidence otherwise. Anyway I did the open mic… went pretty well and I had a good "Something funny happened on my way here" anecdote to tell.
  3. Good luck……. I find that learning new stuff is one thing, but breaking old habits much more difficult.
  4. In rock I can think of the bass player from Beak (the Portishead spin-off, but they don't like being called that😕) He does about half the lead vocals too. He switches between two basses live, one in hand and one in stand. No strap - which makes the changeovers easier I guess. I think Jah Wobble used to it at one time?
  5. I heard this lot via a social media suggestion, thought they sounded good and (quick google later) saw they were playing locally to me. It was tonight and they were very good. I think it's fits here..... Grandma's house, a new-ish Bristol band.
  6. I want the TV series 👍
  7. They got quite a lot of coverage couple of years ago.I thought he was a good front man but didn’t like his contribution musically. I thought they were good instruments wise especially the bass.
  8. Yeah, I'm old enough to think Twenties too!
  9. Debut Album by Yard Act... the Overload. Here's the title track. Perfect for an aging Fall fan 😉
  10. Some of the more 'rootsy' kind of gospel... here the Staple Singers, will the Circle Be Unbroken:
  11. Great - I liked that! Good sound too. Anyone who likes a bit of punk... it's worth checking out. Was the singer drinking a bottle of wine from the bottle 🙂 ?
  12. AAggghhh!!!! couple of ideas started but due to a mixture of work pressure, illness, DAW problem, post-Xmas downturn and many other factors including forgetting what the closing date was... nothing this month from me 😞 . I'll still take a listen and vote though 👍.
  13. When you mentioned Flanders and Swann and consent, I was expecting "Have Some Madeira, My Dear"..... but seems like that is not their only one on the topic.
  14. That's the problem with spoken word or other interludes on records. They get old quicker than the music.
  15. Interesting - the extra cost of being a leftie. What would you say is the typical average cost of being left-handed?
  16. Less than a year after Jim Steinman, collaborator on his classic stuff.
  17. Recent FB find..... Japanese band Otoboke Beaver.
  18. I wonder if the parents ever step in to mediate in these situations? Maybe ETID's did to no avail. I'm pretty sure Mrs Soup and myself would be banging some heads together if our offspring got to that point.
  19. Been aware of this lot (Pozi) for a while, but they were in session on 6 music last night and very good. 3 piece: Drums, bass and violin, all singing:
  20. Can anyone suggest a ETID track for any of us who are unfamiliar and want to hear them?
  21. Indeed. UB40 have two rival bands , one per brother. I see that Gene Loves Jezebel are doing similar.
  22. What happened?
  23. IIRC SAHB were a band before Alex joined.
  24. May be for the best - I post some right old rubbish in there!
