It was in Off Topic at time of writing so I was asking if it should be moved to General Discussion.

Should this be in "General Discussion" BTW?

They do vary in quality for sure, but on average they are way better than what can I do by ear. And for instance Ultimate Guitar has a ratings and comments system in place, which can help.

I'm continuing my banjo journey... sticking with clawhammer though. Aiming to learn half a dozen (beginner) pieces in the next few months. Mainly instrumental versions, but a couple of vocals if I feel so inclined. I just bought an ebook from Hilary Hawke of 10 beginners tunes. I'll start wit the first one in the book - she posts a video on Yuotube for each tune: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/793299086/beginner-clawhammer-banjo-digital-book?click_key=cbece83a7a39235326e62c9733e2b0eeb7c25bb3%3A793299086&click_sum=7ac2b30d&ref=shop_home_active_1&crt=1

On the topic of Sam Kelly and bass, here's a story which you may not want to share with your band mates..... I saw Sam Kelly at a festival with a reduced line up with no bass instrument. Yet many of the songs had a good bass presence. The band announced that after the gig they would be in the tent next door selling/signing merch. Mrs Soup wanted a signed CD, so I went and got it. I took the opportunity to ask about he bass. They confirmed what I had thought.... a couple of them had those pedals which add bass (not always on). I guess the OP's bandmate may not have heard it though!

One thing to bear in mind is that broadly acoustic music is different to electric music, in terms of missing instruments. An electric rock band would sound rubbish if the bass player or drummer where missing. With an acoustic band it's more like any line-up can work. I've seen the folk artist Sam Kelly a few times.... he goes out with any number of musicians, him plus seven, three ,two or one etc.

What are you listening to right now?

This has been an ear-worm for a few days... don't know why, but listed to it a few times since. Great song, written for The Pogues by a friend of the band. I'd assumed up till know that it was an old song (at time of recording I mean..... I suppose it is an old song now!). The Pogues - Navigator -

I'm not one for bass shows, but if I did go to one I'd prefer this way.

True. I think Lydon later on said that the tensions between Matlock and the rest of the were either initiated by or fabricated by Malcom.

The BVs from Glen were more melodic too, based on the clips I've heard. But then didn't McClaren claim that Glen was sacked for liking the Beatles?
-
Good version. To be fair, the OP version did have to fit in many more artists, hence the 7 mins. If you measure it in mins per artist then the original doesn't seem so pithy in comparison 😉.

Or band name😃

Napalm Death in Milton Keynes, March 26th. Quite a small venue, so that's a plus point. I saw them couple of times in the 80s then kind of lost touch. I reconnected with them via a couple of Basschat suggestions (and found that they had maintained a good quality output over the years)and decided to see them live again at next opportunity. (Although I have the Woodentops a couple of days before, so not strictly next)

Time to do it is not an issue nor the reason for asking…. I’m thinking more that it may make old posts and thread’s unreadable. So probably best to wait until the admin suggest a Course of action then I’ll go with that

I just read site news on this topic... so I'll just wait while you work on it . Sorry, I cannot change the title of this question.

I just tried to make a post, including an image but I got a message saying "You have used all of the attachment space you are allowed. Manage Attachments to free up space" ... seems I am at 202% (or something) of my limit . Is this correct?

It's difficult being objective about your own work. You may have a voice on one shoulder saying 'this is the best thing ever' and a voice on the other saying ' this is a pile of cr4p'. In the case of the OP, you were invited so just follow your gut feel and do your best. And then submit and see what they think. You can always say 'I went for simple/complicated/whatever (delete as appropriate) bass-lines - is that what you wanted?'.
-
Yes, kitchen-sink syndrome. Difficult to know when to stop adding.

Had to be the panda. I went with the 'pander' pun, and made the song about not pandering to big-heads who think they know best. Important note: It's not aimed at anyone on Basschat, where great advice is modestly given of course 🙂! Technical: Mostly as usual...... Studio One DAW (first time on the new PC.... see future post about new PC 😉), Drums via Piano-roll, Vantage Bass, Squier Tele Guitar , Keys: a supposed 'bell' sound played via Akai Mini , Vocal recorded with new mic ... cheap and cheerful condenser mic (C-1) from Behringer.

That song is brilliant…. I’ve heard on 6music a couple of times, but good to hear it again. Interesting final chapter in the song! -
