Has anyone bought a bass on a whim just cos of its looks?
Nail Soup replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I have a very slow turnover of gear, but if I do then looks are really important. Most basses are doing to sound and play OK. Only some are going to look right. When Basschatters are talking about tuners and wood and all that stuff it normally doesn't grab my interest. When Basschatters talk about how beautiful a bass is it does get my attention. However, about 75% of the time I think "god, that's ugly" and 25% "drool". That's how subjective looks are. -
I can't sleep for a few hours after a gig..... stopping at a kebab shop and getting chips (maybe in a pitta ๐) is part of my wind-down process. I'm normally still wearing my stage gear....... sometimes attracts comments (and even a selfie request) from the clientele.

Those are the banjos with four strings right? I guess that 5th string would be real pain in music where there are lots of chords and different keys. Feel free t o post an example of the banjo in action in the kind of trad/dixie that you do ๐

In the first episode Martin said that for a recent Spandau Ballet tour he re-learnt the basslines from Youtube videos. I'm sure he was exaggerating a little bit for comic effect, but he does strike me as someone who only maintains his bass-playing skills to whatever he needs for Spandau at the time.

Well worth watching. I believe it was recorded without using any 'clapperboards' and so only due to recent technology could the sound and pictures be synched. -
So the next gig is Napalm Death on Saturday.

The Woodentops tonight in St Albans. At least it was supposed to be..... cancelled at the last minute due to a power cut. Got parked at about 8.20... I already had a bad feeling as traffic lights and street lights were out in the area, and not much light coming from the houses. Walked up tothe venue anyway. they said I think the power cut started at about 7.30.... the band were packing up their gear. This would have been my last gig from the covid postponements . Ah well!

Yes, I would struggle with it..... it's so short.... unless they do some sticks too.

OK, while we are in confessional mode.... I run a banjo hang-out on Basschat:

I just saw that Wayne is doing a new tour with the Mission. The OP says "take up bass duties in a band fronted by someone from a band I adored" That suggest the person is not going out under the same band name. Therefore it can't be Wayne Hussey. QED (Note - I don't actually know what QED means) -
Sadistic Mika Band blast from the past

This has been coming up on my Youtube suggestions for months! I watched the vid...... the band are a bit 'noodly' for me, but I agree that the singer is pretty cool. -
Yeah, better frontman than singer. The other singer had no stage presence. Thanks - I'm going to be stuck with that image all day!

These are popular in pub folk/acoustic sessions... where everyone sits and stands around the room with their instrument and play where they stand/sit. It's designed to clamp to a pub table, and may not work on an amp. Doesn't even work on all pub tables either.. not if the table has those boards around the edge with not much overhang. But they do stop your guitar getting knocked over, and you can hang ukulele or mandolin etc from it.
-
Same here. While the plot of the series was managed a bit, the sense of excitement at playing IOW was very real
-
Yes, a DAW is the most flexible of all practice tools. You can make up your own backing tracks with a simple drum and chord track (or an MP3). You can record what you play and listen back for improvements etc. And at the end you can master your session down to MP3/WAV and force other people to listen to it ๐.

Final episode tonight.... let's see what final couple of chapters the producers have managed and story-boarded for us!
-
Yes, he could have said it all ina couple of mins.... but Kudos to him, he managed to stretch it to over 13 mins ๐. It's ironic really........ we say that attention spans have reduced in the internet age, yet YT vids seem to thrive on this kind of bloated presentation.
