After a walking blues transcription with fingering for double bass
steviedee replied to Mike's topic in Theory and Technique
Just bought the book Gareth recommended for £7.78 at the Book Depository, bizarrely it seems to have went up in price to £8.07 immediately after I bought it!
I know this aint what you want to hear as a recommendation but tell him to get some decent musicians headphones before investing in an in ear monitoring system, the marked reduction in volume helps with clarity, and the added bonus of not going deaf.
Yeah it's not really in ears I was going to get a set of Direct Sound Headphones EX-29 which are noise isolating headphones, and just use the mixer to get a sound I want. Wanna avoid the deafness! Cheers for the suggestions Monckyman very helpful.

The drummer in my band ironically plays loud as f*** but the poor geezer also suffers from tinitus so he is setting up a headphone monitoring system with a couple of PZMs and an out from the bass amp, into a little mixer I quite fancy using this as well however, i'd like to have my own mix as he is going for super quiet and I wouldn't mind boosting the bass a bit, so I reckoned I could maybe have my own mix if I bought a wee cheap mixer, took a mixed signal from his mixer and added a little more bass in my mix. I have two pre amps so I could take separate signals. Any recommendations?

Think im going to give up bass playing..
steviedee replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I actually packed in playing for about 5 years, the band that I was in collapsed after too many false dawns and I limped on for a bit playing in some other bands, I had some good times but to be honest I was only doing it for the partying and got a bit jaded. So I just stopped and packed the gear away in a cupboard, I would get a notion to sell my gear every now and then but never did. After a while I was getting a bit stressed at work and started (I kid you not) to dream about playing, so I dusted the bass off and found I really enjoyed playing again. By a strange series of coincidences ended up hooking up with a my old bandmates as well as a producer guy I know and did a bunch of recording about a month after I picked the bass up again. I Found this site, bought loads of gear and and am right back into it again, happily going nowhere but enjoying it and trying to fill in all the holes I had in my playing when I was busy trying to be a rock star. I dunno where I'm going with this in regards to the OPs original post other than sometimes life get's a wee bit busy and bass playing can seem irrelevant and a chore, but when all the sh*t dies down it's an amazing thing to play music and do something just for the sheer enjoyment of it. So don't sell your gear! -
Guitarists who don't know what they are playing
If we are talking about developing and people have lessons for this, nice gear, 2-3 basses and are pretty serious about their playing, then theory is another string as well.
Completely agree with this, I was learning to read all be it badly quite recently, but having a family, quite an involved job and playing in two bands limits your time and it's fallen by the wayside a bit. I'd love to be able to look at a piece o music and play it as it stands I can read it but it's not exactly quick! However, I play and have played with a number of musicians who can and can't read, currently I work with a keyboard player who has a fantastic knowledge of theory is an amazing sought after player but can't read music, I was taken aback when I found it out because the guy is top notch but he never had the opportunity to learn what with one thing and another. Also I play with a young guy who was up for young trad musician of the year in Scotland who can't read a note, traditional music is different obviously because many of the tunes are passed down but he is amazing on the harp and the button box, I'm sure both these guys would benefit from reading and would make them more employable but I don't know if it would make them discernibly better to the listener. -
Guitarists who don't know what they are playing

I play in a band with a guitar player who often doesn't know what key he is playing in or the chords he is playing, I have to say though he is without a shadow of a doubt one of the best guitar players I've ever heard and one of the best musicians I've ever played with to be honest why he isn't playing professionally is a mystery, he has that Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel style down to a tee. I'm a big fan of guys who can read charts and play from a piece of music and I'm sure everyone would benefit from that skill but there are guys out there who just have the talent but just didn't have the time to get the theory, I suppose it just takes all sorts. -
Well had a jam with my drummer took the sansamps, the peavey dpc 1400x and a couple of EA CXL112s thought it sounded tremendous for a first go. I pretty much left the EQ flat and set the blend to about 11 o'clock on both units, and messed with the drive and the presence. Set the mid sweep on the RPM tow about 9.oclock was all a bit hit or miss and I imagine it'll take a while to get into it. Used my stingray 5 string which is a very hot bass in comparison to the 4 string which has a much mellower tone and I just was trying to get the bass sounding big and fat with a touch of grit and growl, I think it was getting there but impressed lots of dials to twiddle for a bloke who gets easily confused like me.
Sounds like a good setup - so how do you go about connecting it all up to give bi-preamping without the universe collapsing in on itself?
I just followed the instruction the manual you take the sansamp RBI out into one channel of the stereo poweramp, feed the clean signal from the RBi to the RPM then from the RPM into the other channel of the poweramp. I dunno if that's strictly bi-amping but it sounds cool so far.

Just had a wee go of them linked was having a bit of bother getting it all working and only had a picosecond in between bathing a baby and fixing a door but heard the rbi through my poweramp, what a difference in comparison to through the Hartke in the studio. Obviously going through the pre in the Hartke made the sansamp a bit thin as it sounded awesome through the uncoloured poweramp. Eventually got them both working and had to stop, bollox!

Just bought a gator rack to hold some of my new gear but my cabs seem a little bit slim for it and I dunno it seems like it could slide about. Anyone have any top tips about how to secure it? I was thinking maybe velcro or I could use some kind of ties on the handles of my cab to the handles of the rack. Any ideas?
-
Thanks for the info I just got the RBI the other week and RPM last night so I'm taking everything down the studio Sunday to get an idea of what it's like, had a wee quiet blast on the RPM last night seems awesome perhaps less aggressive than the RBI?
-
Just wondering if anyone id running these two pre-amps bi-amped and what setting you use? Also any suggestions how I sneak the rack out of the house before the missus realises I've spent the kid's inheritance on gear?

Bollox I didn't see they were playing in the UK great band man, 12 string bass!

Brilliant DI/Distortion i great nick been inside my pedal case, boxed and all the gubbings, unusually for these the battery box cover is intact as that is the only weak link in an otherwise fantastic bit of kit. Moved over to the RBI but I do think I might regret it. Looking or £90 posted Cut and pasted from Jim Dunlop site Finally, all the essentials in one tough little box. You need a serious D.I. for playing live and laying down killer tracks. You've got to have a preamp and finely tuned EQ to add punch to your tones. And you definitely can't do without some rich, custom distortion. This one-of-a-kind pedal gives you the whole deal in a bomb-proof enclosure that will survive even the most out of control gigs-and players. Built with the highest quality components, the M-80 can give you eve everything from warmth and transparency to a volcanic roar, without making you scroll through menu screens or an indecipherable manual. Engage the color switch for some sweet preset EQ, then tweak your tone with three band control. Dial in your ideal distortion with the gain knob and blend just the right amount into your clean signal, then kick it on and off at will. The adjustable noise gate pours on the sustain and cuts out hum and hiss. With XLR and parallel 1/4" outputs and a phantom power switch, you'll never have a problem delivering your choice new tones. Power: Single 9 volt battery or Dunlop ECB003 AC Adapter
I've not done anything with it cos it doesn't bother me that much.
Stu are you suggesting I should just forget it and get on with my life?

Hi I dunno if anyone has the issue but its driving me nuts on the bridge pickup of my faker is angled forward if I loosen off the screws it eases out and straightens but then the screws don't sit flush!
-
+1 for the MX80 is awesome I'm toying with flogging mine because i've bought an RBI and am waiting for an RPM to partner with it, but I might just keep the m80 as it's great.
-
I've never had any problems, bought and sold gear on here found everyone I've dealt with to be first class.
-
I had an RPM ordered from DV247 but they are now out of stock which is a bit annoying I'll have to see if I can get one elsewhere.

Lightweight and SUPER-powerful!
Lol and they look like the might be quite comfortable to sleep on after I get shown the door by the other half.
