  1. Garage storage may have some bearing on the demise of the plastic. Less than optimal temperatures and, if cars are stored there, there may well be some pollutant damage. I used an old A frame stand yesterday (not a Hercules) which I’d been storing in the loft, took it to a gig and, upon opening it, the rubber at the apex just split. The environment in my loft had obviously degraded it (plus, it was probably cheap). Fortunately, not as a huge disaster as having the height control section let go on the OP’s Hercules (I have one of these too, which I may now remove from the loft to a more stable environment).
  2. I like Peter Frampton’s version of While My Guitar... then again I can’t stand Clapton’s woeful wailing on the original (George should’ve played it himself IMO). Joe Cocker (feat. Jimmy Page) is probably the high water mark for almost any cover.
  3. Cody Wright on Sunday interests me (another pick playing masterclass after Bobby Vega last time around sounds good). My guitar playing interest is piqued by Lari Basilio.
  4. That Flightcase is a steal!
  5. RESULT!!! Enjoy.
  6. Here’s an hour and a half of the bass in question.
  7. Whichever gets the job done best for you. However, if part of that job is future resale, the ‘Ray is likely to move quickest.
  8. A visit to the ‘How Many Basses Do You Own’ thread will give a good guide as to the tools vs treasures divide.
  9. I’m another of the, “If it’s not getting used, move it on,” brigade. However, this has bitten me in the bum a few times (both guitars and basses) where I should’ve kept hold some pieces, but it’s all been a learning process which has brought me to where I am now. I have 4 basses, two of which are custom builds based on what I’ve learnt what I’ve liked over the years and these are likely to stay with me for many years (never say forever and all that). I can see improvements that could be made with the other two (just small things) but they’re getting used as is, so no plans to move them on at all either (Lady Ez has forbidden me to sell one of them as she thinks it’s really different sounding from other basses - it’s a Rob Allen). So I guess I do regard them as tools, but as many artisans take pride in their tools, I do too.
  10. The bass baby is home, that's the best thing.
  11. An interview with Roger by Guitar Guitar. Some of it I’d read elsewhere, but some new stuff too. https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/news/140794/?utm_source=fb&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=SOCIALMEDIA
  12. TRUTH! Been there, done the obligatory swearing.
  13. Some years ago, I lent a bass that I'd recently restrung to a friend. It was a very sweaty night and they were a lively punk covers band. Yeah, the strings were as dead as a doornail after that gig
  14. I give it until Wednesday, then you'll have bought one anyway 😂.
  15. Indeed. A lot of what gets played on PR really isn’t what I call rock. For instance,: T Rex and Sweet, plainly glam pop; when Kiss went disco 🤮; an awful lot of the Queen and Bowie canon and plenty of others who get a ‘pass’ because they have some rock credentials. Whereas, something like Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s Warriors of the Wasteland, the attack mix, featuring Gary Moore, doesn’t get a look in (check it out, it’s proper ‘rawk’). As @steantval says, Brighton Rock is, “Proper quality,” and it’s (for the most part) actually solo; just Brian playing the Red Special through an Echoplex.
  16. Recently had my Elwood L restrung at Guitar Guitar for free under their recent promotion. The guys there hadn't heard of Maruszczyk, but they were mightily impressed with mine, which was very pleasing.
  17. It's a good first step I reckon. I'll get to use it live tomorrow week and it'll be interesting to hear it during the sound check FOH and if I get any comments (the drummer and guitarist are normally quite attentive to my sound).
  18. GAH! 😍 Be still my beating heart. Looks the dog's doodahs and I know the play and sound incredible. 👏👏👏
  19. Because of this thread I went out and bought a Sadowsky SBP-2 pre-amp pedal (cheaper than buying a Sadowsky bass and my internal organs remain my property). I know that it only boosts at 40Hz and 4KHz, but it seems to do something else too, don't ask me what, it's like fairy dust has been sprinkled on my already, not too shabby tone (IMO).
  20. Go anyway, always worth a visit IMO.
  21. Just had a free set of EB Cobalt Flatwounds (those puppies aren't cheap) fitted to my Maruszczyk Elwood L by the guys at GG Epsom. Even cleaned and conditioned my fretboard. Kudos.
  22. I listened to it and, as ever, it was pretty unimaginative, Freebird and Comfortably Numb were always going to be in the top 5 somewhere (just like last year). Just listen to the request show and it's normally the same old, same old, so the results were to be expected. However, I was surprised to hear Wishbone Ash's Everybody Needs A Friend making it in at #35 (although I think Sometime World would have been a better choice). I voted for Tom Morello's solo on Audioslave's Like A Stone, suffice to say it didn't feature .
  23. I have a P, a J and an MM type. They are all usable, but one will be better than the others for a particular band setting, musical style, etc. @Cuzzie makes a good point about being out FOH for a true picture of what each bass does away from the stage area. For recording, a P is hard, but not impossible, to beat, as it has a knack of really anchoring a track.
  24. I stripped the finish off of a MM SUB and a Fender Roadworn, both had become sticky. First I used Nitromors and then finished it off with fine sandpaper. I then sealed them with Danish Oil, sanded back a bit, resealed and then a final very light ‘sanding’ with fine wire wool. I was pleased with the results.
  25. Due to the recent Sadowsky GAS thread, I’ve become sucked into the GAS vortex once again. However, rather than going out and selling my current bass stock and various body organs to finance one of Roger’s finest, I’ve managed to be sensible and just add an SBP-2 to my pedal board. Even though it’s just bass and treble boost, it seems to do something more, don’t ask me what, but it does seem to sprinkle some ‘fairy dust’ on my tone, as Reg Presley of The Troggs would say (look it up). Very pleased with my purchase and looking forward to using it live in a couple of weeks. Big up to Guitar Guitar in Epsom for letting me demo it, twice. What’s that I hear you say? Very well...
