There are lots out there. As BassBus asked, budget is key. I had an Ibanez GWB35 that was very nice, but they make a more expensive version with 'better' woods and hardware (it's all subjective of course), the GWB1005. Then there is the Pedulla Pentabuzz. And then there is... the list could be quite extensive.

Nothing wrong with basswood, Ibanez use it on a wide range of basses and guitars and it withstands having monster whammy bars being fitted and used.

Some scratches on the body and head - the bass?

Ergonomics, sound, looks, in that order. So in terms of looks (and to some extent ergonomics) I like a 2+2 head (or 3+1 at a pinch) a sparse looking control layout - not too many knobs - and a lightweight, but not too small body. Hmm, why do I play a Ric then?

It's ten weeks this week; I'm starting to itch with excitement!

I don't think living in a large conurbation helps at all; wood for the trees and all that. I understand the frustration, though.

It depends where I am: ear buds with iPod on the bike; in built speakers in the computer (they're rather good); hi-fi in the lounge if listening to a cd. However, most of the music I listen to is on the radio and then it's mainly on the DAB or in the car. My band recently recorded 4 tracks in the studio and the mixes sound different dependent on what I use to listen, the best (to my ears) is on the hi-if.
