Thanks for introducing me to 'New Career in a New Town' from Low,what a great track. Being a big fan of Roxy & Japan, I can't believe it took me till 40 to discover Bowie's 'Low' album!
Low's got some great tracks on the first side, I like 'Be My Wife' too. Another good one for some of Murray's tasteful basswork is 'Up the Hill Backwards', from Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps). The last album he did with Bowie, before seemingly vanishing.
Gah. Bloody tell me about it. In about half an hour I'll be listing a lovely little 325 copy (g*it*r - as played by some bloke out the Beatles) for the third time. ...There is absolutely nothing in the listing text that violates their T&Cs - but when did that matter? J.
Remember my Mazeti 330, got removed twice. Absoulutely no reference to anything Rickenbacker, second time it was pulled photograph was just that of the pickup! Mr. Hall actually sent me an email, if I recall, describing my 'antics' as being 'sneaky', for using such words as Lennon,Townsend,Weller etc in the listing. Tosser. Be careful
funny, him posting that question will probably result in it being pulled
I've had a Rickenfaker auction repeatedly pulled, whereby there was no mention of anything Rick related. Think they still claim copyright on headstock design etc. If Big John simply doesn't like it, they'll take it down - no messing. Hope it stays though, as I'm interested to see how much it goes for.
'Sound & Vision' by Bowie just came on my IPOD and it has a lovely bass line. On further investigation it turns out to be somebody called George Murray..... can't find out anything about this guy but he played on most of Bowie's 70's albums...anyone know what happended to him ?
+1! Probably in my top five too. Love his playing on 'New Career in a New Town' from Low album. Apparently Andy Rourke learnt to play copping his basslines, & Murray was also a big influence on Derek Forbes. He played on all the Bowie 'Berlin Trilogy' , & some tasty basswork of his on Iggy Pop's The Idiot album too. Been trying myself for ages to find out what became of him too. Seems to have just disappeared.

I usually hate this sort of stuff myself, but this is a quality tune. Bass sound cuts through, quite an inventive bassline too. Also, love those Ovation Magnums

Webstrings 'Detroits' Flats - SOLD

Bought these .045-.105, along with some heavier gauge 50's. http://webstrings.com/flatwound_bass_strings.html Turned out the anchor ropes (50's) suited me, & the mediums are going spare, unused still in packet. Really good strings & piss on all the other budget brands I've tried. Tenner inc. postage(?)

If you fancy a non-reverse one, there is the Gould Stormbird. Also has a set-neck, & is pretty cheap. Maybe good for modding too(?) Had a set of these Webstrings flats http://webstrings.com/flatwound_bass_strings.html on my Tokai P-Bass for a few weeks now. I have to say I'm impressed, especially considering their price. Was initially bit wary, after previous uninspiring experiences with budget strings..Hartke, Roberts (dead E-strings) etc. Used d'Addario & Ernie Ball, which I was quite happy with, but found .100 E-string of both 45-100 sets, too floppy. Going up to 50-105 Ernie Balls, and tension was all over the place & not comfortable (for me). Webstrings 50-110 I got have a great feel. Tone has settled down nicely fairly quickly too, unlike Chromes. Don't know who makes them, but have made in USA on packet. Anyone else tried them? Great flats - Recommended

I've got a '83 cherry flame sunburst one pickup version (RB920). They really are great basses. Hope somehow it works out for you, can totally understand your feelings.

He also uses 50-110 Elites steel rounds.

I must be the only one here not that familiar with Jeff Berlin. I've heard of his name before, only from some mentions on BC. Gather he's a bit controversial. His tache reminds me of someone else though Cool!
Ressurection Joe is one of my fav bass lines of all time
So many good ones on 'Dreamtime'. Got to dig it out this weekend. "Go west young man"!
Jamie Stewart of the Cult also used that eg. Ressurection Joe, Go West, God's zoo.
Another great underrated bass player - top call!

He's namechecked a few times on this forum, but definitely underrrated. Big influence on myself when I started, along with Andy Rourke. IMHO, think his best moment was on 'Themes for Great Cities' from 'Sisters Feelings Call' album (recommended). I've said it before that I think he's playing for his life here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJDx-1L3V9U Though pretty much everything he did with Simple Minds was pure class. Why did he leave Simple Minds, was he pushed(?). There's a few opinions & thoughts, on the internet if you dig enough. Maybe his style stood in the way of them becoming a bland, stadium act they turned into. Draw your own conclusions. However he did return for their 'Neapolis' album in '97 & tour albeit a year or so, which had some good moments. Anyway, good call!

Saddening. My sympathies & prayers for his wife & family.
the strings are tauter near the bridge too, so when it comes to playing fast it can be easier at that end of the the bass. Having said that I agree, I generally prefer the warmth of the neck end.
There is more tension at the bridge end. Though with a heavier gauge of string, faster stuff can be done down at neck end too. I find myself playing all over the area. However, these days more over the pick-up (P-Bass) & at the neck. Varies according to music, bass, strings etc. You can get get so many tonal varieties, just from which area you pluck the strings with both fingers & a pick - it's good to experiment.
