.....I currently have a set of Ernie Ball flats on but they have odd guages (heavy top and light/medium bottoms) which feel a bit odd when in drop D.
I liked the tone of Ernie Ball flats, but found tensions a bit weird, somehow uneven(?). Now happy with Webstrings - gauges seem more even spread, very similar in tone to Ernie Ball & Fender flats -nicer to play.
In my experience the Roberts Flat wound were crap. 4 sets and 4 dead E strings.
Me too. TBH seller was as helpful as possible, but I lost hope at fourth free set.

Hi Paul, I've had experience of Roberts flats before, wasn't impressed at all - though I do hear roundwonds are good for the price. However, label on the strings you're refering to is different to the three sets with lifeless E strings I've got languishing in my box of bits & bobs - so Roberts could possibly now be sourcing their flats from a decent manufacturer. I personally would go for Webstrings flats cheap, & as good as Ernie Balls, Fender & d'Addarios IMO. Cheers

It's OK, a lot good info on there with regard to FX, and like every other bass forum, a million discussions on flats. However, of all the forums; Finnbass is rapidly becoming a favourite for me.
I've heard a lot about the V-TONE BASS BDI21, without actually hearing it. I've checked this forum, and done the search, so apologies if I've missed something, but can anyone point me in the direction of some sound clips? ta.
Hi All, I have been looking round and found what I was mumbling on about. What I was reffering to was line 6 PODS etc. Line 6 have an online library where individual tones are stored where you download them to your pod via a PC. Does anyone Know of any other manufacture other than line6 who allows you to download ready made tones and transfer them to your effects unit. I found line6 stuff is generally more expensive than others. cheers Jim
Hi Jim, You could try the cheaper Behringer Bass V-Amp Bass V-Amp. There is also an online tone library. No experience of one myself, personally prefer pedals, but someone one here has probably used one before. Cheers
Can anyone suggest replacement pick ups, pots and 3 way switch for a Hondo II rick copy??? thankss
Regarding Pick-ups, you could try Kent Armstrong 'toasters' , cheaper than Barts & Seymour Duncans, and probably more authentic sounding. From here WD Music Not tried them myself, may do in the near future, but a good review on Finnbass by Oxblood Toaster Pickup review

Will be watching this with interest.

Just a plug for my mate's band; Voice Of The Bomb, who are playing this Tuesday at the Fleece. It's free admission & two other Bristol bands; Road to Recovery & A Day At the Races are supporting. Voice Of The Bomb @ Fleece (Bristol) 23/12/08 Apparently also some drinks promotions - should be a good, cheap night out!
I've got an audition to get into music college coming up, and i want to get ahead with preparations, and so was wondering whether anyone had any suggestions for audition pieces - what would really impress you guys and what would you be looking for in a player !? I've had suggestions such as Dolphin Dance, Rampage - Marcus Miller, Nowhere to Run (Jamerson), some Jamiroquai tracks.. Then i thought of transcribing a piece.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated !! Happy Christmas !
Good choices, especially 'Nowhere to Run' - can't go wrong with some good Motown. 'Tears of a Clown' & 'Love Is An Itching In My Heart' have got good grooves as well. Good luck with the audition

Just heard this track on the radio - love the bassline. Was wondering if anybody knows who the bass player was on this(?) Cheers

All genres considered apart from singer/songwriter acoustic based stuff. So this means i am looking from anything, Death metal to funk, Jazz to Pop. If anyone can help me out that'll be cool -Rob.
Hi Rob, Why don't you put an ad on Gumtree?
Save yourself the worry, and replace the P's P/U,a Dimarzio gives out a good slap tone
+1 to Mr. ARGH's sugestion & possibly swap out the bridge also if you want. P-Bass is the way to go if you want a nice old-skool slap sound - keep it, if it plays well for you. There again if you want to do typewriter impersonations...
I'm not too surprised to be honest - Westbury might not be brand on the tip of every players tongue but they were made by Matsumoku. The Track 2 basses don't come up too often and this one was in pretty good condition (missing saddle excepted). Algis Kizys out of Swans used to play one of these incidentally.
As did Muttley McLad! -

Hello and welcome from another (expat) Manc. Some of the best bassists ever have come from Manchester, though you probably already know that. Cheers
-
Thanks for the tips. There's too much damage to finish for spot repairs. Ideally, once down to bare wood, I'd like to leave it, but guess it would get grubby fairly quickly. After something pretty minimal as far as refinishing is concerned, that wouldn't make the neck look too different in colour to the natural maple finish body...
I suspect a version of you with 1) significantly less money but a taste for cheap & idiosyncratic (ie repulsive to anyone with standards) crap that would be more at home burning in a skip, and 2) a partner who sings in my band & therefore allows me my little foibles. As for embodying this forum - I have to say right now I have never owned a Fender, MusicMan, Warwick, Shuker, Lakland, WAL, Status, Goodfellow, G&L, Pedulla or even a bloody SX - so I'm amazed they even let me come on here! J.
Same as you, I've not spent more than £200 on any bass in current collection, cheapest was about 50. In previous times have had Fenders, Stingray & Rickenbacker on long-term loan, but am more than happy with what I've got now. Though, I do fancy getting a Bach or SX perhaps oneday.
-
Nice to watch, but I think it doesn't nail the groove like the original bassline.

Would get the (much) cheaper Behringer clone, if you're only going to use it sparingly or for backup. I've had both pedals - either are good, for approximations of the SVT sound, if that's all what your after.
