1.
Hola! After putting it off for ages, I stuck a set of Webstrings flats on my Sandberg today, and whipped it out for tonights gig. Crikey!! I've never used flats before, but I absolutely loved the tone and the feel of them. I was plugged into someone else's battered old Laney Linebacker, but the bottom end was magic. I was playing with a couple of acoustic guitars and it sounded so much more 'right' than it ever has with rounds. I think i'm converted, at least for my acoustic-based gigs. Can't wait to try it through my rig proper and see how well they rock out So yeah, why have none of you insisted I do this sooner?
I think they're nice strings too, & don't take too long to settle in, if played a bit.
 2.
Bass solos - more divisive than religion? To paraphrase, a gentleman is a man who can play a bass solo. And doesn't.
Who needs a lead guitarist?
 3.
Apologies for putting this in bass effects but I guess those in the know may have some knowledge of guitar pedal resources. does anyone know of a good online effects forum that can help value a pedal for me? its an Ibanez OD II overdrive pedal. Very early seventies (old ibanez logo) and I think pre tubescreamer. Sounds great through a valve amp with guitars but not particularly of use with my bass setup hence no use for it at this point in time.
Hi, This site is quite good DiscoFreq Ibanez OD II Theres a couple on Ebay at the moment being sold in the States......
 4. I forgot....one of my favourites for lurking over vintage Japcrap; Electric Ladyland, Old Market. Just a visit alone, is an experience in itself.
 5.
Any advances on Bristol?
Bristols fine with me!
 6.
And grow a mullet.
What like yours?
 7. Haven't bought a bass from a shop for over ten years so I haven't really had much experience of many of them in Bristol, but I'd try Heron Music in St.George. Fella who runs it (Dave) is really nice helpful guy, he's also a member of Killing Joke's roadcrew!
 8. No, he does mean Movin' On Up!
 9.
yeah prick mark king eh??? play like it, id love to see you play like that, and sing at the same time...
10.
...... I can maintain that non-funk/disco slap is the preserve who those who think Hi-Tech trainers are cool and rolling the sleeves up on a blazer is acceptable.
Well put, couldn't agree more. Though, I was told recently reason I failed an audition with a local function band was due to my limited slapping skills. There's some interesting views here on the subject from Justin Meldal-Johnsen on his talkbass section: JMJ Slapping
 11.
I'll be using vintage exclusively yup! I wouldn't sell you the Fresher, firstly I want it cos Nicky Wire played one...
I didn't know that - interesting. Another one to add to the list of famous Rickenfaker users..Barry Adamson,Bruce Foxton,Hooky,Cliff Burton(?)
 12.
to endorse me Link
Nice one - good for you. Does that mean you can only play Vintage basses when gigging etc? If it does, could find a good home for that Fresher of yours
 13.
Such a big back catalogue and a fantastic light/video show ... and Mani* is the man! Really great evening - seriously, catch them if you can on this tour Highlights: Rocks Off, Swastika Eyes, Exterminator * nerdy bass comments: played his Rick 3000 shortscale and an Epi gold Jack Casady
Good on you mate. Unfortunately, I missed them this time in Bristol. Seen them a fair few times over the years though, Mani is definitely their (not so) secret weapon. I really like their new album particularly 'Uptown', did they play much of it? Also, was wondering did you catch the support act at all, 'Cristine' - Douglas Hart's (J & Marychain's original bassist) new band - any good? Cheers
 14.
Thank you very much Nick..... Do you remember the video they made for that track on the Tube??? Sheer brilliance!!
Classic - actually reminded me to look it last night on Youtube
 15.
I'd still like to hear the story of how all the top brass from Sugarhill Records ended up crossing the pond to come and work with Adrian Sherwood, if anybody knows. I never really understood how he pulled that off!
I believe it was more Mark Stewart who was working with Sherwood, who instigated bringing in the Tackhead guys. Bit of info here at about 4.05 I have a mate who I haven't seen for a while who used to be quite involved (in a non-musical capacity) with the On-U Sound crew back in the day, planning to catch up with him over Chritmas period for a pint - will definitely ask him about how the connection was made. It is intriguing.
 16.
Change to roundwounds and get a metal pick............
No, I will persevere with my felt pick & flats - I must get that sound!

 18. Hi Was wondering if anybody ever does string scraping on their bass, that technique that all heavy metal guitarists seem to do all the time. Do it myself occaisionally, partly to piss off any guitarists Anybody have any interesting techniques? Can't seem to do it, when I've got flats on though(?) Cheers
 19. +1 to all the above. You could get a teacher, but if that's not economically viable, try buying few books on scales or getting info off the net. Also, it's good to listen to as much music as possible, songs with good basslines not necessarily solo technical stuff. For me Motown,McCartney,Lynott is inspirational. Guessing from your song choice, indie-ish stuff might be what what you're into(?) You can't go wrong with Andy Rourke from The Smiths or for newer material possibly the Killers. Don't be afraid of trying any variations on the root bassline, however 'corny' or 'cheesey' it may sound, it can lift a song up & make a difference - that's our job! Off the top of my head: DD E F# A/ AA B C# E/ BB D E F#/ GG G F# E F#/
 20. Hi, I guess everybody's got an opinion on Behringer which is at least a thread in itself, but was wondering if anyone's tried out any of the other cheaper brands around such as Biyang, Artec, Belcat etc? Thinking about getting a phaser & the Biyang one looks interesting http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PH8-Phaser-pedal-Biy...A1%7C240%3A1318 Would be grateful for any unbiased comments from anyone who's experienced such brands. I build pedals myself, but sometimes it's more cost effective to buy Cheers Nick

 22.
is that him on Bug Powder Dust? I thought that was a sample off the intro to Flora Purim's "Open your eyes, you can fly". --------------------
You're right  Though it sounds like it's replayed or at least overdubbed. Seem to recall DB being credited on my 12". Will have to try dig it out this evening to check. Still a great bassline
 23.
Missed it!!!! I knew there was something I had to do!!!!. Has anyone got a Tokia are they any good?
I've tried one was alright, but would recommend a decent old MIJ copy (not a Kay!) over one anyday. Just spotted 'Bushes scream while my daddy prunes' - Very Things on your signature. What a song, you have impeccable taste sir!
 24.
[Dodgy American accent] Hey there, RickenBuddies! [/Dodgy American accent] I need a pickup surround for the bridge pickup on a 4001/4003. I do NOT want a vintage/original surround - it's going to be b*ggered around with, so what I want is either a cheap after-market item or something salvaged from a RickenFaker. Anyone got something suitable lying around that they'd like to convert into cash?
Was tempted a while ago to try one of these, but I decided to put the cover back on - IMO looks cooler Pickguardian (Ric 4000)
 25.
Heard his stuff with Tackhead? and Keith LeBlanc's solo stuff? Dirty, dirty bass! It's what made me buy a Thumb :-)
He did some tasty playing with Bomb the Bass too!
