Thinking of building my own pedalboard. Who on here has done the same? – Any hints/tips? I think I know what I want but I’m gonna draw up some plans and take it from there. Show me your DIY pedalboard pics
I will be shortly also. Currently going through a bit of a pedal phase. As I've got a couple of spare old bass cases knocking around, considering this: Bass case DIY pedalboard
the red llama clone im selling in the sales forum could suit you, at low gain adds a dirty grind to the tone of your bass.
Built a Red Llama myself, over Christmas. Even 'stock' with no mods, found it not to have that much low end loss (if any) - pretty good.
The Bad Monkey will do it OK then. It's VERY touch sensitive as well, the degree of overdrive can be easily controlled by simply playing softer or harder. I haven't seen many pedals which respond this naturally to your playing, the Bad Monkey has been a great find. Even without the mod, though there IS low end loss, it's not too bad... I'd probably mod the pedal though, I'm not too bothered since I have a trebly kind of tone (I will try to mod mine, anyway, with a simple cap change). Ah, by the way, mine started working again today
Just bought one of these cheap off local Gumtree. Looking forward to trying out tomorrow evening, after reading above comments. Nice simple mod here: Bad Monkey, C11 mod Cheers
Just interested in what make of string people are using including guage. I just fitted a set of Elite Stadiums 45 - 105's to my new Stingray and it sounds stunning. I have been using these strings for about 20 years but I hardly ever see them mentioned here. Do people not rate them?
I use same as yourself; Elites 'Stadiums' 45-105's on an Ibanez Blazer & same gauge nickel 'Players' on an old Ricky copy. I think they're good; last well & have a nice tension. Also been using them happily for about twenty years, though I do like other brands/types of string too.
Peter Hook a total dickhead, looks and plays bass like a total t*at. Colin Hodgkinson has been setting high standards for many years, listen to some material from Back Door. The guy out of the Blockheads......awesome.
+1 Norman Watt-Roy - Good call, if if you could actually remember the fella's name - Wikipedia's quite good. FYI, also played on some Clash stuff - total respect Out of curiosity, why is 'Peter Hook a total dickhead, looks and plays bass like a total t*at.'? Personally, thought he was quite innovative in his genre for the time & even now. Prey tell, please enlighten me.

Maybe not the most technical or flashiest player, but Mani's certainly helped make the bass cool again & he is entertaining. For that reason, I'd also put Paul Simonon as a close second & possibly Peter Hook third.
I hear what youre all saying, but I just dont know enough to play in a band right now. My knowledge is pretty limited. Matt
Hi Matt, Have you considered going to some jam nights. There's a few going on around Bristol, mostly blues and/or rock based. Some in particular are not elitist & people at all levels have a go for a bit of fun really. A drummer mate of mine, who is quite good, but doesn't think he his etc, reluctantly came to one with me few weeks ago, & thoroughly enjoyed it. He's now got some confidence back & is gagging to get in a band. If you fancy coming to one or a pint in the new year, give me shout. If it's any consolation most us go through these phases! Good luck & all the best for 2009
Sounds sensible. After a similar band implosion last year, I took a break for two months then started browsing band adverts, before joining my current outfit. Keeping your hand in by jamming and having lessons great idea too.

Keep playing, summat always turns up..I took aeons before I found a band I could tolerate and vice versa....
+1 to the above. At the moment I'm in the same situation myself & actually quite enjoying it! Playing with few different bands & musicians, attending jam nights, had a few auditions etc. Sometimes it's a good thing to be outside your comfort zone. Though I'm not having lessons; I am reacquainting myself with playing styles that have fallen by the wayside like slap & disco due to lack of use. For me my old band splitting up, was a blessing in disguise.
.....I currently have a set of Ernie Ball flats on but they have odd guages (heavy top and light/medium bottoms) which feel a bit odd when in drop D.
I liked the tone of Ernie Ball flats, but found tensions a bit weird, somehow uneven(?). Now happy with Webstrings - gauges seem more even spread, very similar in tone to Ernie Ball & Fender flats -nicer to play.
In my experience the Roberts Flat wound were crap. 4 sets and 4 dead E strings.
Me too. TBH seller was as helpful as possible, but I lost hope at fourth free set.

Ciao Adriano, Auguri di Natale! Salute

Hi Paul, I've had experience of Roberts flats before, wasn't impressed at all - though I do hear roundwonds are good for the price. However, label on the strings you're refering to is different to the three sets with lifeless E strings I've got languishing in my box of bits & bobs - so Roberts could possibly now be sourcing their flats from a decent manufacturer. I personally would go for Webstrings flats cheap, & as good as Ernie Balls, Fender & d'Addarios IMO. Cheers

It's OK, a lot good info on there with regard to FX, and like every other bass forum, a million discussions on flats. However, of all the forums; Finnbass is rapidly becoming a favourite for me.
Hi All, I have been looking round and found what I was mumbling on about. What I was reffering to was line 6 PODS etc. Line 6 have an online library where individual tones are stored where you download them to your pod via a PC. Does anyone Know of any other manufacture other than line6 who allows you to download ready made tones and transfer them to your effects unit. I found line6 stuff is generally more expensive than others. cheers Jim
Hi Jim, You could try the cheaper Behringer Bass V-Amp Bass V-Amp. There is also an online tone library. No experience of one myself, personally prefer pedals, but someone one here has probably used one before. Cheers
Can anyone suggest replacement pick ups, pots and 3 way switch for a Hondo II rick copy??? thankss
Regarding Pick-ups, you could try Kent Armstrong 'toasters' , cheaper than Barts & Seymour Duncans, and probably more authentic sounding. From here WD Music Not tried them myself, may do in the near future, but a good review on Finnbass by Oxblood Toaster Pickup review
