Can you mix and match types in a bulk order? I'd chip in for a couple of sets of flatwounds if you're including any in the order...
I use their flats (50-110), really rate them - nice feel & tension. They settle down relatively quickly too, giving a nice thump.
I have dipped my toe into the world of valve amps by buying one of these: http://acoustic.homeunix.net/twiki/bin/vie...eCombo164and165 It's primarily for guitar, but also sounds great on bass when run into a 15" cab. At the moment it's quite noisy, even from the pre-amp out, and the seller suggested it could do with new pre-amp tubes. It takes 3 12aX7s and 1 12aT7. Do any of you have good recommendations for high-quality, cheap replacements? I've never dealth with valves before.
I've got JJ Tesla ECC83-S in my Trace , sound nice to me for not much £, but it's worth getting opinions from others who know more than me.
Hi Steve. Someone was asking a very similar question the other day and I pointed them to Brycebites preamp valve comparison. Obviously the thread's not what it was, but if you're a member you could checkout the updated list at finnbass.
Beat me to it. +1 for the preamp valve comparison on Finnbass, very informative & objective. There's also a chap over there 'Oxblood', who knows his valves, & I found to be very helpful in the past.

Difficult question there's so many!

If it is one of RB924's /RB950's etc...than as Jon says that's a good price. Buy it!!!! I've got an '81 RB920 cherry sunburst single pickup version. It's a lovely bass, quite a fast neck & good range of tones. *Edit: recall another member getting one of these last year http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...adstar&st=0
Chris-b you ask a fair question. In my head I don't think I'm trying to be Pino (as if ) or any one of a dozen professional players who will always be way beyond my standard, but I do think that I'm trying to put the song across to the audience with an overall sound that they will recognise. Even that's probably a stupid sort of nirvana - we certainly ain't a trubute band! - but it's something to aim for! So you're probably also right in that the pedals are for me.
+1 , With you on this. Certain songs can be enhanced by tasteful use of effects, & if you're doing that, it's no bad thing for the band's overall projection to the audience. Admittedly most songs can be played without any fx, but if you can add something & give them another dimension, then why not? For me a nice P-Bass with flats is a tone in itself, as much as a bass with rounds going through fuzz & an envelope filter.
-
Love the look of them, but unfortunately they don't agree with my playing technique I like to pluck directly above the pickup, & when playing with a pick sometimes dampen on the bridge.
-
I think it depends on what material or covers the band's doing, being the decider on whether to use effects or not. The band I'm in, do one set of fairly soul/motown-ish songs. For that I wouldn't (need to) use anything other than my P-Bass with flats straight. However, the second set is more contemporary; B. Spears Toxic, Killers, U2 etc... For that sort of stuff I use fuzz, octaver, envelope filter,OD. This is probably also partly due to the absence of a keyboard player, which harks to the other thread you mentioned. I prefer the use of pedals myself, rather than a multi thing as I don't really change my settings that much once set up.

There is a forum on Antoria, you may have already found it. It's relatively new, but has potential Antoria site

Lovely bass there & at not a bad price  I have a 70's Antoria 335 copy. Great guitar, love it.
Is anyone into Can,i have really got into there stuff at the moment its very original and seems to be a big influence on a lot of bands who have been very good,i never realised the mondays covered hallaluwah as hallalujah. There is some pretty cool and funky bass playing on the documentary im watching about them.
Love Can, very good call. Not only the Mondays, but they in particular Jaki Liebezeit, were a big influence on Joy Division too. Not withstanding being an innovative bassist, Holger Czukay was also way ahead as far as sampling too. The 1983 collaboration 'Snakecharmer' between Czukay, Jah Wobble, The Edge & Liebezeit still blows me away. Funky as f***

Question; Wondering if its worth it to buy a jazz bass?
..Ive had a good slap tone out of a P Bass too mind!!
+1 I love that old school P-Bass slap tone, awesome. -
Dean Garcia; formerly Eurythmics, later 90's shoegazers Curve

Andy Rourke sometimes played with pick & could kick out a groove when required
In the interests of completeness - I just dug the mag out ( it's in Bass Guitar magazine from '05 ): There's at least three Ibanezes, two natural and one black. One of the naturals is definately a Blazer, and one of the others is the Roadstar II ( the black one I reckon ), of which he says: "Well it's the one I still use actually ( What was your first bass? ) - it's a Roadstar II which I bought in '83 or '84. I had to save up for it for about a year and a half [......] £170 quid". Loves the neck he goes on to say. What a great advert for Ibby Japcrap he is - good on him! I might buy his Steinberger just for the sake of it Pluck
Seem to remember him also going through a phase of using Fender P-Bass' at one point, before coming back to the Ibanez's. Good man, he obviously knows a decent bass when he sees one
But you can from the price!
On the contrary, if they are anything like the ones I got, then there's nothing substandard about them at all. Substantially made, with a decent weight & finished OK. For anyone who is isn't a fan of Badass, & there are a few, they're a good alternative to the usual Fender-ish tin plates, with tracked saddles. I personally don't think that cost necessarily always means a compromise on quality.
Cool, cheers mate This one goes up to £16.00 though...more expensive than the other seller. Is the back of the bridge solid, like a block or not? the pic is not great
Ends on mine are solid (one of which I bought off this seller), but as you say photo is a bit crappy. I would ask the seller TBH, just to be sure.
Not my case...it would be a disaster trust me...lol nick, the one you've posted seems similar but with the holes in the 'right' spot. Does it fit perfectly in Fenders like the Gotoh and BAII?...shame the colour, for the price I would give it a go
It fits my Tokai, which I guess can be considered a Fender Precision replica & also dropped staight into my Yamaha which is kind of Jazz bass derived. You could ask the seller if he plans to get chrome ones in at some point in near future. *Here we go chrome version here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BAD-SS-STYLE-BRIDGE-...%3A1%7C294%3A50
Not sure if this should go to the eBay section, but it's not really an auction, they've got a shop but i didn't find this bridge on their website. Anyway, what do you think? It looks rugged, like an unbranded Gotoh or something...I'm looking for a bidge for my MIM Jazz but it looks like this one requires some DIY - not my thing AT ALL lol... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Bass-Guitar-Brid...%3A1%7C294%3A30
This would be a better design for Fender etc. I've got them on my Tokai & Yamaha SBV - good bridges. The only problem is that this is gold. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Bass-Guitar-Brid...%3A1%7C294%3A50 He does have them from time to time chrome though.

Great bass sound, probably due to Armand Van Helden's involvement. He seems to love fuzz bass tones lately, & who can blame him!
Where could I get this done? I don't know much about the tech tbh.
Woolly Mammoth is a great fuzz. I built one myself & as Oli (Mr. Foxen) says, it's a simple circuit. It is quite synthy, I love mine. But, not sure it would give you the 'crunch' that you say you're after Sounds to me, like you need an overdrive - Fulltone Bassdrive(?)

If you're OK with working from schematics try Free Info Society or Schematic Heaven, loads of diagrams on both sites.

Was tempted by this myself, but it's a bit too 80's for me Could be a bargain to anyone wanting a headless, without spending Status £££ Hohner Jack - Bristol Tradeit

Was just about to recommend a nice fuzz, probably with some form of blending a la B:Assmaster etc..., but read that fuzz didn't work for you & you've got all the dirt you need. How about an aural exciter of some kind?
I've got a few dead notes on an otherwise fine G string. The notes at 5th - 7th frets are not completely dead, but muffled, not ringing. Does anyone know what causes this and what can be done? There are no other dead spots, either on that string or other strings. Strings came with the bass (Fender CIJ P-bass), which I bought new six months ago; I assume they're factory issue. Thanks.
You'll undoubtably get a fair few replies to this, dead spots etc.... But first I'd recommend trying a fresh set of strings & a good set-up by a decent repair man. Also see post Dead spots for more info & comments that may help. If it's any consolation, most basses can tend to suffer - some of mine do anyway, though not so noticeable with flats Guess it's a bit inconvenient on those particular frets. That if deadspots are the problem(?). Good luck. p.s. Also, if you get a Mod to shift this post to the 'Repairs & Technical Issuesl' section, you'll probably get best advice on this problem
