I'd recommend a WEM Dominator. Great little combos, not particularly fancy, proper retro look with a lovely tone. Only 17watts, but a loud 17watts - think of half an AC30! Can still be picked up relatively cheap on Ebay, though have seen their prices starting to climb a bit recently. Certainly a cheaper alternative to an AC15 or a classic Marshall 1974 18w, of which it's design was allegedly borrowed heavily from the Dominator.
I've come to a conclusion that I really just don't like compression at all for live work. I've tried really hard to like it, and I bought a few compressors (ranging from supposedly bad to supposedly good) to get an idea from more than one pedal, and it just doesn't do it for me. Its either too subtle (regardless of what anyone else says to me, subtle effects don't work in a full band mix for loud noisy aggressive music), or full on too much squish. I don't have a particularly noisy chain, but it usually just serves to raise my noise floor up to more annoying levels too. Question is do I sell the compressors I have, or do I keep them for when they one day might be useful? :/ Am I the only person who has this point of view?
I'm pretty much the same as yourself too - like to feel the bass 'breathe' a bit. However, I think it can also depend on style of music, playing technique etc. Recently, in the covers band I'm in, found myself occaisionally using a limiter for some songs. But, in my originals band would never use a compressor/limiter, prefer to have plenty of dynamics.
Can they not be used just to even out levels of other effects? I know that my Micro Q-Tron gives quite a volume boost, although I don't have a compressor, I'd like to be able to level everything out.
My Q-Tron like all of them is the same, the boost is too much. I'm going to mod mine with a simple output level pot, just to bring volume down to sensible level.

Quite a few years ago, I used to borrow a friend's Washburn B20-8. Lovely bass, but did like to neck-dive. Great tone. They're pretty rare, found a photo here Washburn B20-8 Seems like there might be one currently for sale in Andy's, though probably at a typical Denmark St. bonkers price!

Not even mid-priced, why not try a nice old (80's) Ibanez Blazer, preferably natural finish, ash body. IMHO these certainly give a decent P-Bass a good run for the money. Ibanez Blazer reviews
Have you seen this Commodore Nick? it looks very similar to the bass in your avatar!
Well spotted. It is virtually the same apart from colour & mine has 'lawsuity' scroll headstock. That one also looks like it has had a control plate on the back added. I like mine it has quite a nice tone & perhaps surprisingly plays alright. Be interested to see how much that goes for, it's already more than what I paid for mine. -

Got a set of Webstrings 'Detroit' Flats 45-105. I normally use 50-110 as far as flats are concerned, & Webstrings cocked-up my order incorrectly sending me these & (disappointingly) not responding to my emails on returns policy Hence unwanted pack, 45's are not enough tension for me - like my flats to feel like telegraph wires! Anyway, still great strings - better than EBs & in many ways nicer than Chromes (IMHO). Dont take too long to play-in. Made in USA, not used - packet unopened... After £12 inc. postage. Please PM me if interested. Cheers
Bought this from fellow BC'er RichardH a while back, with a view to building my own lightweight cab. Sadly, with a stack of pedal projects to start & finish, plus three bands on the go...I'm never going to have time to do it and it's just going to sit around forever. I've also just bought an old Peavey BW cab, which will do for now. It's in good condition. I briefly tested it when buying it, & it sounds great & works fine. Section of fibre surround gasket has torn away, but this has been replaced by some weather sealant strip by previous seller & is not noticeable. Rated at 300w, 8 Ohms. Eminence Gamma Spec.s here I'm after £35 plus postage, or collection from Bristol would be fine. Please PM me if interested Cheers
Bump! Still available, & yearning to go into a good cab -
Just buy a Nano Small Stone phaser, I got mine for only £38 new online! You could try to build your own but it's a lot of components to squeeze onto a small board.
+1 Quite a bit to cram into such a small enclosure! I also personally don't think it's that cost effective to build a phaser, though guess that also depends on how much you value your time. Now, cloning 'boutique fuzzes' ; that's a different matter....

Peavey Black Widow 15" Cab (115 BX BW) - *SOLD

Selling my Peavey 15" Black Widow cab. Just got a TE 1153 to match my V-Type, so this is now surplus to requirements & have no space! Cosmetically, it's a bit tatty & previous owner has tipexed what can be described as a grimacing smiley on the cone(?!) Which a few people have actually complimented. However, it sounds great & has that monstrous tone associated with these cabs. Black Widow driver is rated 8 Ohms & 300w. Would be collection - based in Bristol, but could deliver locally. Looking for about £45(?) Please PM me if interested. Cheers

I'd give the Bad Monkey a go. I did the bass mod on mine, but to be honest it did sound on bass good prior to this. Plus they can be had cheap. Having said all that, hoping to finish off building a Fulltone Bassdrive clone this weekend. Heard good reports on these too. Essentially another Tubescreamer variant...
But the Red Hot Halapeno Brothers are also rubbish, always have been. Nothing to do with selling out. Fortunately, racism, bigotry, cruelty and war don't effect me, but Green Day do. Occasionally I listen to the radio (only in the car - no CD player) and occassionally Green Day are played. This means I have to change radio station, which takes effort. Effort takes energy, gained through eating food. The way I see it, skateboarding tossers like Green Day owe me a small refund on my food bill each month. That's why I think they should probably be killed.
Hence, my previous comment regarding pit of lime disposal method. +1 on all the above. They truly are cringeworthy, excelling in tastelessness in all areas. Personally can't really relate to mentions of sell-outs etc, as for me they've always peddled sh*te - probably one of my all time most hated bands. And, as for anyone mentioning this bunch of turds in the same breath as The Clash & The Skids; now that's unforgiveable. Really glad this thread was started.... I really do hate Green Day!

All three Grade A tossers should be buried in a pit of quicklime.

Cheap amp good sound vs good amp bad sound...Laney/Peavey vs Mark Bass
nick replied to urb's topic in Amps and Cabs
Anyone had a similar experience with other famous brands and preferred something cheap and 'nasty'?
Had an on-off love & (more) hate relationship with Trace Elliot gear for nearly two decades, though love the V-Type set up I've got now - just a nice sound without much messing with it's (albeit) basic EQ. An amp I personally rate ,had & very much regret getting rid of is H/H VS Musician 100w head with 'valve sound' . Killer amp (IMHO). Will undoubtably buy another, when I find one at a sensible price i.e. cheap! Cheers -
I'm getting a bad feeling about this... S.P.
Not necessarily, I say definitely give it a go. You may just lock-in with the drummer, you never know. Plus, if the the band are a reasonable bunch, & understand the importance of bass player - drummer relationships; they should at least allow you both at least a few goes to tighten-up. Sounds like fun & quite a unique experience - hope you enjoy it whichever way it goes. Good luck too!
