hey this "credit crunch" bullshit must really be gettin to everyone! coz prices of secondhand gear seems to have plumetted lately! is everyone really that skint and desperate for cash at the moment?
It's not 'bullshit' & it's more than just due to the 'credit crunch'. With spiralling food, fuel costs, plummeting house values > re-emergance negative equity - most (levelheaded) people are just realising where their priorities should be. Food, home, fuel OR spare instruments knocking around which can be sold - not difficult to understand why it's a buyers' market at the moment.
Ocean's 12 and 13 loads of bass by Justin Meldal-Johnsen Awesome old style grooves
Excellent call. I'll raise you with 'Dirty Harry' Lalo Schifrin. Loads of good tracks, & some nice fuzzy bass. Seem to recall Chuck Rainey was bass player on the soundtrack(?) My first bass was a '73 black Fender Musicmaster. Sold it to buy a Westone Thunder 1A, as the shortscale Fender was not the best for slap - this was in the eighties Had a lovely tone, quite punchy - wish I had it now.
I can't imagine it being worth £200+.
Sold my Shaftesbury a short while ago for nearly that amount (£188) & that was with a non-working pickup & a less than perfect (though original) finish - significantly more than what I paid for it too:) However, with current financial climate, would personally hold on to it - if you can. Well done, a good find - Collectible.
Have I made a massive mistake here?
I think you missed a good bargain, but like you say; would have needed a bit of TLC. However, if you still wanted it, guess you could contact person & arrange courier.... Paid a similar amount for my Maya 4001S actually. Was £150 with a Laney amp that I resold for £90.
Seriously??? It was the version with the set neck aswell. I've been after a Rickenfaker as you know but that thing played like sh*t. My hand was killing after the show
May have just needed a decent setup. If that hadn't cured it, you could have always sold it on as a 'project' bass - you would have still recouped your cost & then some....
Got back from Hungary today. Headlined a festival out there, the lead singer sorted out the gear we borrowed for the weekend and I ended up playing a Jolana D bass. Neck was like a tree and the action was so high I could slide my passport underneath. I was offered it for £40 but declined..
What?! .....You could have easily quadrupled that if you sold it on!
Go on, make us an offer... J.
Very tempted, but just bought a Yamaha SBV500, which sort of covers Jazz bass needs. Otherwise I probably would. I think Mayas generally made cracking good basses. -
Andy Rourke's Smiths stuff really was great. Pisses me off that Morrissey painted him as "just a session musician" during all that business in court over royalty payments. His contributions to their hits were huge. I never really spent a lot of time sitting down and working out other peoples' lines, but I had to with The Smiths. Funnily enough I've never played a P-bass with a pick. I should get one.
Years ago through various close contacts (& friends) I came to meet in connection with The Smiths, Rourke wasn't just a session player as far as input was concerned. No disrepect to Moz or Marr, but I think it's now fairly obvious where basslines for 'This Charming Man' & 'Headmaster Ritual' (and others) originated. I believe he accepted out of court settlement out of necessity... IMO one of the most underrated bassists. Certainly an inspiration to me, probably the reason I took up bass
About guitars really but I suppose the same can be applied to basses. I am looking at an Antoria guitar at the moment, specifically a Les Paul and I wondered if any of the JapCrap experts could give me some tips? I know that Antoria was a brand that was owned by JT Coppocks (Leeds) Ltd and was used for guitars imported into the UK from Japan and presumably these were made in the Fuji Gen-Gakki factory (ie them what made Ibanez, Greco, etc). Now I suppose what I want to know is, is there any reason why an Antoria product may be inferior to a Greco branded product of the same period or should they, in theory, be pretty much exactly the same? Is there a comprehensive (or potted) history of JapCrap anywhere online I can have a look at? Ta
I have a lovely old sunburst (70's) Antoria 335 copy. Bought it for £30, was in a bad way cosmetically (stickers, beer, gunk) & pickups, wiring & most of controls were shot, but neck & constructionwise OK. Rewired with some GFS P90s, set-up, fretdressed & cleaned it up. Now it's a lovely guitar, even had a few a compliments from some seasoned Gibson afficianados. Buy it if it's a good price & set neck Cheers
From the mid-70's, a 212 cabinet in very scruffy condition but fully functional. The Fane speakers look like a retro-fit to me - the originals could have been Fanes, but could just as easily have been Celestions or WEM's own-brand ones. Photos by email on request. Collection from Chiswick (London W4) or Central London. £25
PM'd Cheers Nick
ok, here's mine. it used to have some mods (hence the two small switch holes between the vol and tone controls), but now it's back to stock. it's lovely, but it's mainly used for 'on the knee' noodling whilst watching tv these days. as i said...could be up for sale.
That's nice. For a while I was after one of those myself in sunburst. Why don't you use it much these days?
