1.
darn...now i actually have to go buy a new schaller bridge just to get the shim !!
Why not just get one made, would be cheaper. All you need to do is find someone with ability to cut (and drill) small piece of steel plate possibly 2mm to size - a backstreet welder, or small engineering workshop etc. If you had a decent jigsaw & file, you could probably do it yourself - don't throw your money away on a new bridge!
 2.
yeah, i've tried using the bridge to raise the action, but that didn't work. as for checking the relief, at the moment the strings are so flat against the neck that it's not possible. i wish i could remember if i used the schaller bridge plate when i did the first fit...although i'm beginning to think that i must have.
When I fitted a Schaller bridge to a Fender Musicmaster many years ago, I had exactly the same problem. I fitted a plate underneath to bring the bridge up a bit. It's not a trussrod related problem. The plate I used was Schaller one, made no doubt in anticipation of this problem, but I'm sure you could either make or get made something similar to suit your needs, and would be cheaper. Hope this helps, good luck with the build.
 3. Hi, Could anybody please advise where I can get hold of just the end pins for Schaller type design straplocks? Only need a few straps for amount of basses I have, & would like to avoid forking out for the whole assembly if necessary. Thanks
 4.
Oooh, you got the one on ebay? Good work! That will sound MONSTER, the 4x12 cab is a heavy bugger but sounds feckin great
Yeah, I got that one. £450 for the amp & the 4 x 12 cab didn't seem too bad a price + it's local to me. Been after a valve or similar amp with a bit of welly for a while. Band is getting louder & though I love the tone, I don't want to thrash my lovely old 17 watt(!) WEM head - need a bit of headroom. Originally had my sights set on a Bassman, but at the moment they're unfortunately outside my budget, with addition of a decent cab. Never tried a 4 x 12 cab, so not sure what to expect - always used 1x15's before. Picking it up tomorrow, & will give it a road-test prior to next rehearsal. Guess if amp/cab or both are not my cup of tea, I should be able to recoup cost if I sell it on. Hopefully, I will like it.... Can imagine it being a heavy buggar. One thing I may have to consider purchasing next, is a pair of these. Would be nice to find some in dark green to match!
 5. I think Tord Øverland-Knudsen from the Wombats has potential http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RVXqMzGit8 With a curly lead & what looks like a JapCrap Jazz copy - boy will go far!
 6.
hmm...fuzz it up my friend. If you want the ultimate then IMO you should go for a ZVex Woolly Mammoth, but their pricy. Try out a few bass specific Fuzz pedals, the new EHX range looks very interesting - the Bass Big Muff should be great. If you want something really cheap and chearful and available right now then go for a Little Big Muff. IMO their great for bass and give a really dirty fuzz (which i love) with top end definition as well as maintaining a lot of the lower frequencies. Each to their own though, but I’d say get a fuzz, maybe not one I’ve suggested but a Fuzz or OverDrive are typical first pedals. There’s others on here that know a lot more about effects than I do so I’m sure you’re likely to get some more advice on this.
+1 for fuzz I would recommend the Danelectro French Toast, bought one myself of a fellow BC'er. I've tried a fair few now myself, including some good homemade ones. However, this is a good one IMO, & cheap as chips.
 7. Just bought green carpet one myself, with the 1248 (4 x 12) cab. Looking forward to giving it a blast at next rehearsal.
 8.
If I had: a. the arms b. the money c. the storage space, and d. the musical need
+ a new vehicle!
 9.
ok. First things first... I think the material is great. Catchy tunes with good hooks. I also think that you guys have real talent. Reminiscent of the Jam in the 'sound effects' era (which I'm a big fan of) I've got to say though, sonically I'm not sure you've got the most you can out of these recordings. They sound a bit thin and lack punch. They also lack in width and depth. In more detail...(listening as I type) basics first, the things that need more work are as follows: The bass is very light. Needs to come forward more. Sounds like a pretty low end DI has been used. (I also suspect the mix room is either poorly treated or not treated at all) There's also a huge space in the mid range. This sound more like an arrangement thing more than anything. You could fix a lot in both of these by splitting the bass track below and above about 350hz, compress the low end with something like an 1176 to tighten it up, add some distrotion to the top end (maybe using izotope trash or a sansamp) Kick has a nice click but lacks oomph, snare is a bit on the puny side, lacking in body. Don't like the verb on the snare, sounds cheap - d-verb maybe? I nice plate would do a lot more for it. Mic choice on the vocals is a bit suspect. It's not working terribly well with the vocal. Vocals are also a bit far back. I'm also not a fan of the reverb on the vocal though it could be brightened by EQing out everything below about 1k. I like the BV's but they need to be pushed wider. Given the sonic issues it actually hangs together reasonably well. I just think if you sorted out these issues it could be a LOT better. Hope this is useful. T
Hi T, Thanks for the feedback - really constructive. Never thought of the Jam - but that's a nice compliment. Bass was actually mic'd up through my old WEM, but I know what you mean, it does sound bit light. Think on next recordings we're going to do, I'll use my Rickenfaker & stereo it out to two separate amps & also take a DI through a Sansamp. At least I'll have three tracks to play with in mixing. Agree with you totally on the drums, again this is something we'll have a look at. Vocals - after listening to them again in more detail, I hear what you're saying. Thanks again - much appreciated
 10.
Do you want comments on the material the playing or the production?
Hi, probably more interested in production opinions to be honest. Material & playing are all quite subjective anyway... Thanks Nick
 11.
You got friend request. Tunes were a welcome break from the horrible metal that most of our friend requests are.
Cheers mate. Hope you're doing well Oli
 12.
Feedback coming up: The recording's not bad at all for a small studio - my band used to be recorded much worse. Still loses the bass a little I think, but then I would. Still, within the limits of the recording, you sound pretty much exactly how a bassist in that style should sound, I think. I like the singer, too. He doesn't scream his head off and he's in tune and there's something different about his voice. The major thing I did notice: is your drummer playing the same rhythm in all 3 songs on myspace? Is that just because of the songs chosen for the website? All in all, not at all bad, better than I've ever done yet, but could possibly use a bit more variety in drums. I think that would help hugely with the impression given on the website. Hope that's gentle enough Jon
Cheers Jon - much appreciated, that was gentle Bass is never quite loud enough (at least for me) in the mix - is it? Regarding the drumming/rhythm, first two tracks were chosen because they're basically quite upbeat - shoetapper type stuff, & because we're after gigs at the moment thought they might be best. Other songs we have & intend to record in near future, are in all sorts of styles rythms; skiffle-esque,standard rock & even an attempt at bossanova! He's a new drummer, is a vast improvement on our last one. Last few gigs we've had , he's been exhibiting a lot of Keith Moon characteristics - if anyone comes to see us, they'll hopefully agree & see why. Third track is a drum machine Cheers for the impartial feedback
 13. Hello all, We did some recording couple of weekends ago, just finished mixing it at a local studio. We're relatively happy with results considering time/money constraints (six hours) & cider intake . Drums & bass were banged down in two takes to allow more time for vocals, guitars & mixing. *Bass : '82 Tokai Hardpuncher (P-Bass copy) w/Ernie Ball 50-110 flats into a 60's WEM Dominator Would be grateful for any impartial feedback, opinions & suggestions. First two tracks on our Myspace http://www.myspace.com/yourrobotoverlordsband Please be gentle with me! Thanks
 14. Time to dust down the Rickenfaker again! We're playing Fleece in Bristol this coming Tuesday, with two other great bands Gagarin & The Sky is Blue. It's free admission with drinks promotions , a Bristolbands.com http://www.myspace.com/bristolbandsdotcom showcase night. Please come down if you're free. Cheers

Got one myself - they're a nice, playable bass. Though I do want to change/get rewound pickup in mine at some point. It's 15k - bit too hot for this sort of instrument (IMO) = bit wooly
 18. Gould did/possibly still do one(?) There was one on Ebay recently, looked OK, set-neck etc Unfortunately, was outbid on it, but it only went for £60! So can't imagine them being expensive in the first place. Tried finding distributer myself, but no success. Not much on the internet on Gould Could be worth looking out for though.
 19.
Hi Dave, Due to being really bored, I've thought about starting to build my own effects. Probably quite simple things first, but I was just wondering if you had any tips or advice. Sure, there's plenty on the web, but I thought basschats own pedal guru may offer some more?! Any thoughts on tools and things to get started? I'll probably pick up a breadboard firstly and work around with that...good idea?? Many thanks
Some good ones here in veroboard layout Fuzzes http://aronnelson.com/gallery/main.php/v/D...bum18/album144/ Distortions http://aronnelson.com/gallery/main.php/v/D...lbum17/album06/

Well overpriced though (methinks)
 21. 'Wishing Well' - Black Sabbath Not a rocker myself, but love most of Geezers basslines. Not only the bass, but the whole rythmn section sounds like it's playing for it's life on this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJWscmB1CJ0 p.s. Junior Eyes too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqmrD0RH5ss...feature=related
 22. Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads) - no contest
 23. Received - many thanks. You've done a cracking piece of work there, very interesting. Recording this weekend, so will try a few of the techniques. Good luck with your career plans in this area
 24. My favourite is Jameson's, though unfortunately it doesn't always suit the band I'm currently in.
 25.
Second, what equipment did Barry Adamson use in Magazine and how did he get that unique murky sound (maybe it was just plain distortion or clipping)? I thought he used a Rickenbacker 4001, but there may be more to it than that. Anyone have ideas? One of my favourite bass players... maybe the favourite!
He used an Ibanez Rickenfaker, one with the big 'mudbucker' in neck position early on. He was an innovative bass player, one of my post-punk favourites too
