1.
I take 3 different basses to most gigs (Main: 72 Jazz, 2nd: Hollowbody w/ hummers, 3rd: Fretless) and I'm comfortable just switching to one of the other 2. Battery goes flat on the active Jazz and its fun to switch to the fretless until the end of the set. So Unless you are really out of your comfort zone then get a similar one. Otherwise IMHO it can be good fun and makes you think differently.
At the moment I take three too. Generally a Tokai P-Bass, a Rickenfaker & an old semi w/flats. Last time I broke a string was about ten years ago, & I guess I could pretty much cover all the stuff with P-Bass due to it's versatility, so I can agree with those who say one good bass is enough with spares & perhaps a small toolkit. However, I do like the different feels & tones I get with different instruments, and (for me) it's also fun to chop & change. IMO there's no point in having them all if I'm not going to use them. There again, I could end up going back to using one bass if transport space was an issue....
  2. Why not try a Behringer BDI21 (sansamp clone)?
i dont think i'll ever change from a p bass. they're all i need. leo got it right pretty much first time.
+1
does anyone else love them as much as i do?
I do - don't think I'll ever get rid of my Tokai
  4. Very bizarre, would be the best way to describe it. Six hours in a glass box (finished 10ish), in Bristol's Millenium Square. Was a pilot filming for Endemol/BBC3 new series of 'talent' competitions/reality-TV called 'UpstAged' Everyone 'miked-up', so anything said could be heard outside the box in the square, along with music played - no swearing/defamation allowed etc! Was quite a good laugh. We should get some footage for our web page, gave us a bit of publicity on BBC Points West last night, & an insight into how the whacky world of television works.... Played our set about five times, interviewed, some interactive web stuff with 'fans' we didn't realise we had. Was an interesting way to spend my birthday!
  5. Hello all, We're playing Millenium Square today in some kind of glass case for approximately six hours! Though not non-stop.... It's a pilot filming of some new BB3 programme 'Upstaged', talent competition I think Wht not come along at some point in the afternoon or evening & throw some rotten vegetables/fruit or hurl abuse at us! Action
Lower the action, thinner the tone. Higher the action, better the tone. Also, lighter the strings, thinner the tone but the easier it is to play, heavier the strings better the tone but harder to play. Its a complex little formula which you will be fiddling with for the next decade or so!! I would recommend you try a few basses at a shop that does repairs and see what feels ok for you.
For me highest action possible, with the heaviest strings I can get away with, without impeding my playing too much.

  8.
Hi guys I wanted to open up my thred earlier about there being no modern bass heroes by stating that music since the turn of the century has been on the whole pretty crap. Reading your posts on this board, it is obvious you guys are as passionate about your music as I am and I just wanted to see what you thought. One of my mates is a guitarist and I was telling him about how there are no musicians inspiring kids to pick up the bass. He then pointed out that there aren't any guitar heroes either, the guys who made him want to start a rock band....Clapton/Hendrix/Beck/May/Vai/Slash...etc. My music taste is totally eclectic and I can see that each decade had it's own merits 60's - Beatles, Stones,Motown,Floyd,Who,Doors 70's - Prog Rock (Led Zep, Yes), Glam Rock (Bowie, Bolan, Roxy Music), the rise of Punk (Pistols,Clash,Police, Stranglers), Disco, funk, New Wave (Talking Heads, Blondie) 80's - New Romantics(DUran Duran,Depeche Mode) Goth (Sisters Of Mercy,The Mission) Hip Hop, ALt Rock (The Cure, Pixes), Acid House, Baggy (Happy Mondays, Stone Roses) 90's - Grunge (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins), Brit Pop (The Whole Blur V Oasis thing), Electronica (orbital, Chemical Brothers) 00's - Simon Cowell's puppets, James Blunt and The Artic Monkeys....ffs I guess what I am saying is that I want to be surprised by music but there is nothing. Everytime I hear a new band with a catchy single, you then discover that was the only track on the album worth listening to and end up skipping through the rest. You compare that to a band like The Jam for example, even their B-sides were worth listening to. I had to laugh recently when another mate of mine was viewing some latest tuneless wonders on TV and exclaimed "Christ i've got album tracks by Squeeze better than this crap" I don't want to be forever trawling back through time, trying to find bands I missed the first time around....where are the guys to pick up the flag and run with it? Roger Daltrey recently stated that something really needed to shake up the music industry....another Sex Pistols he said. My God is he ever on the money. I can't help but feel the kids of today are being badly short changed.
That's a good list actually. I would have included Velvet Underground, New Order, possibly Jesus & the Marychain, & most definitely; the Smiths. Regarding the latter band & your reference to guitarists; Johnny Marr has & is still inspiring generations to pick up the guitar, through Noel Gallagher & others, to even stuff he's doing now with Modest Mouse. Music scene could do with a kick up the arse of some kind & not too soon. Last one (IMO) was Acid House, prior to that Punk. Though, have to agree with you; at the moment there doesn't seem to be any 'cool' players around. Maybe we've become jaded, grumpy old bassplayers or very possibly we were spoilt rotten back in the day(?)
  9.
WEM Dominator – blimey that takes me back. The Pink Floyd album cover with all the gear outside a truck (“Ummagumma?”) includes a couple of WEM’s
Nicest amp I've ever used. Only 17 watts, but it's a loud 17 watts! Was a really lucky find - I love it http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;hl=dominator
  10.
I bought an Eden N8 to use as a practice amp and left the eq flat. Prior to this i had been using an Ashdown MAG300 2x10 combo. I had all sorts of issues with the sound of the MAG initially until i pushed the Deep and Bright buttons in. I played with the eq and got a sound i liked with every knob tweaked somehow. After playing the N8 for a month or so i went back to the mag and hated the sound; the soultion, i turned the eq off so its basically flat. I use my bass to control the tone, even though it is passive. Anyone else do this?
I basically bypass whole EQ section too on my Trace. Could never seem to get a tone I liked without endless fiddling. Sound comes from a Behringer Sansamp-clone pedal thingy.... With smaller gigs I just go straight into an old WEM Dominator, with the treble & bass controls set flat. Tones simply coming from whatever bass I'm using, technique, etc...

  12. Death in Vegas : 'Rocco' Bass played a bloke called Mat Flint from Lo-Fidelity Allstars Takes a while to get going, intro maybe a bit long. 13.
Good thread! So I present for your enjoyment: "Here Are The Roses" by Dragons: OK so it's very Joy Division, but in the absence of the real thing I think, it's an acceptable substitute and certainly an improvement over Interpol or The Editors. Quite like this - cheers! Cool Hayman bass too

  17.
Yeah but why would you want to play all that miserable Indie music? I've done it before and after my thirtieth birthday and getting a gig is like pulling teeth.
Think it depends on how you define 'indie' music. I've never had a problem finding a band at all (around my age group) & I'm on the 'darkside' of 30's! Don't play jazz either. Must be lucky, or in a bass starved territory (not!)

  19.
I usually wear a black 'wifebeater' to show off my muscular tattoed arms with either (depending on how saucy I feel) Black leather or black levi's or even tiger stripe combats. Trainers dont do it for me so its normally Hi Tech magnums or work boots. I will on occaision wear a bandana but am after some suitably cool headgear as I have no 'barnet'. This does not stop the women from finding me hot even though I am old!! I am a stud and a tart and I love what I do. Have you seen TM Stevens...? Now thats the way to dress!!
Rock on, mate - brilliant!!!

    MXR pedal repairs.

Hi Col, Not worth sending it all the way back (£45! ) for just a pot replacement, which is couple quid at the most. I would either get replacement from MXR, or if you're in a rush to get it fixed, ask them for logarithmic or linear value of pot, & buy one. Anyone reasonably competent with a soldering iron should be able to repair this (easy job), & it shouldn't really cost any more than a tenner. If not possible at music store, try TV repair man or similiar. Shame you're not Bristol based, would do it for you. Hope this helps Cheers
  25.
Hi, Im thinking of swapping out my Spb-3 quarterpounder on my P for a Spb-2 Hot Pickup , What I want to know is does the Spb-2 have as much thump as the quarterpounder as I have heard that overwound pickups sometimes lack in thump ?. Anybody?
Personally, wouldn't go for SPB-2 Hot if you're after 'thump'. You'd be better off keeping QP's on your bass. I went from Quarter Pounders to Hots, & then settling on SPB-1 Vintage. I found the SPB-3s OK, what I think is a modern tone, but too lively for me. Didn't like the SPB-2 at all, output way too hot, muddy sounding, not a nice tone (to my cloth ears),with no definition. I was happy with the Vintage, it does have plenty of 'thump'...warm. However, I do understand that all this is down to personal choice, style of music, etc. & there are also other good makers such as Wizard,Kent Armstrong etc Good luck with your search
