2. Another interesting one here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A:IT&ih=018
  3. Good call - now there's a band! I remember seeing these a few times, quite ahead of their time, & they really knew how bang out a groove. Can hear their influence in a lot of punk-funk stuff going round now. Apparently, back together.
  4.
found that pic of the doubleneck- http://www.nlightsweb.com
Never mind the doubleneck, check out that mullet! I'm going to get the album 'A Song for All Seasons'. Not usually a fan of Prog, but I like this guy's style!
  5. Heard a track in the car on the way home yesterday on Radio 2 called 'Northern Lights' by a band called Renaissance. Blew me away, (to my ears) sounds something like Hooky (on a good day) playing with Peter, Paul & Mary(?!) Not found much on the net ,other than bassplayer was Jon Camp & this nice (unrelated) montage of the song on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJvfkkdWVtc Top bassline or what?!

  7. Nice looking Alembic-like Kawai here. Shipping seems cheap(?) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vintage-Kawai-FIIB-B...1QQcmdZViewItem Item 150179680149
  8. Hello, Manchester so much to answer for.... The place where all the best bass players come from - with the exception of myself! Reminds me - not been 'home' for ages... Cheers
  9.
Hello Nick, Thanks for the interesting links. Good news: the 4 matched 2N5952 JFET are not a problem! I also managed to find very clear instructions about how to paint the box. Silent Fly
Hi, Last link was basically stating that unmatched JFETs was not a problem for this project(?) Good to see you've managed to source 4 matched ones anyway, & a good price. Lot less hassle than buying 50 & sorting through them! Thanks as well for link to painting a box...some other interesting stuff on that website too. Good luck with the build.
  10.
I may end up buying only the PCB. For £6.50 it is more than reasonable. I am not sure where I am going to get 4 matched 2N5952 JFET though
I can only suggest buying a batch of them (they are cheap) & finding matched ones(!) Some info here on JFET matching: http://www.geofex.com/ http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/inde...51735.msg389061 However, this forum reply is also interesting, & could offer some hope(?) http://board.buildyourownclone.com/viewtopic.php?t=3597 Why not give it a go... Hope this is of some help. Good luck
  11.
Hi, Does anybody have some experience with some of these pedals/company: <a href="http://www.buildyourownclone.com" target="_blank">http://www.buildyourownclone.com</a> or their UK distributor: <a href="http://www.vibe-o-tronic.siliq.net" target="_blank">http://www.vibe-o-tronic.siliq.net</a> Silent Fly
Hello Silent Fly, Not used either of the above, but I have built a fair few of my own clones. The BYOC kits are probably very good, but to me they do a seem bit pricey. e.g. +250 BYOC kit: £35. An original DOD 250 can easily be picked up on Ebay for that or less! If you sourced the parts yourself, & made it on veroboard - cost would be no more than £15. Most expensive items would be the box & footswitch. Diagram here: http://www.aronnelson.com/gallery/v/DRAGON...RO_001.gif.html Excellent forum, with diagrams & advice here http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/ BYOC's own forum is also very good http://board.buildyourownclone.com/ If you're reasonably competent with a soldering iron, a lot of effects are a piece of p*ss to make & cost relatively peanuts. A good way to spend those long cold winter nights! What effect do you fancy building?
  12. You can't go wrong with Alesis SR-16, always loads on ebay. I would also recommend Zoom 2-3-4, for it's wide variety of sounds & ease of programming. My own favourite is Alesis HR-16, nice old school sounds. Very easy to programme as well.
  13.
If you were thinking about the Kay P bass or the Avon SG, I'd seriously reconsider. Both were very lowly instruments that beginners were very happy to move on from.
I agree with you on these brands, Kay especially. However, most Maya whilst not being in the same league as Tokai/Greco etc (IMHO) are still worth considering, as are Kawai.
  14. Top idea, though not good for my wallet! Watching a few of those myself

    behringer bdi 21
If the BDI21 has problems DI'ing and being too quiet, wouldn't adding a pre-amp booster pedal do the trick and increase the volume?
I personally think that the BDDI is also low level, along with BDI21. Having said that when it has been DI'd directly for recording or live into PA, I've not yet experienced any problems with it from engineers, etc
  16. I think the SBV500 bass is a very cool design, discontinued now I believe. Would love to find one. Look like an interesting alternative to a Jazz to me.
  17.
In the context that you want to write basslines that show bass is more interesting than often given credit for, I'd say put your root notes in your back pocket and keep 'em there as a fallback position. They'll always work but they're also awfully predictable. Don't get me wrong, they have their place and some of my favourite songs have simple root note lines, but for interesting basslines you're better off thinking melodically or rhythmically in the first instance. Listen carefully to what your drummer and especially guitarist/keyboard player are doing. If there's an ascending chord sequence work out a descending bassline to play - these are quite effective. Leave gaps to accentuate the notes when you do play. Listen for moments in the song when there's nothing much else happening try a simple fill, see if it adds value to the song or detracts from it. If it works, it might stand out as a neat little hook which people will notice. Listen to records where you've appreciated an interesting bassline and then listen again to what the drums are doing, and then again to what the other instruments are doing. Pick a short passage for this just so you can get a feel for how the bassline works with and around the other parts. This will give you some hands on insight into what's possible. If nothing better comes to mind you can always play the root notes. By this time, as nothing better has come to mind they probably are the best thing for the song in question. But at least you'll have given it some thought rather than defaulting to it as so many bass players seem to do. You'll probably get conflicting advice as this thread develops but that's OK - pick through it and find what works for you, you'll have fun at least! And remember, there are fewer rules in music than in most other walks of life - you have more freedom than you think even if you have to convince a few people along the way. Hope this helps, Steve.
Excellent, well thought out advice. Knowing basic structure of guitar chords can help too.

  19. By chance, saw Neville Staples & his band (who are on Saturday night) at a small festival in Swindon about a month ago - Brilliant musicians & still an excellent showman! Brought back some happy memories
  20. Hello Dave, There does seem to be quite a few on here from this neck of the woods Cheers Nick

  22.
whenever i need distaution i struggle. adding distaution simply saps all the bass out of my bass , are there any pedals that add more bass while adding distaution / fuzz?
My next project is one of these, apparently solves this problem & I'm tired of modding/adapting guitar pedals for bass. Though I'm not sure if these are commercially available or not - maybe someone should start making them(?)
the schematic is pretty straighforward...for £40 you could prolly build one....
