2.
Current Ricks have a push/pull pot wired to bypass the cap, and so should be easily capable of that sound. Having said that, that's a fairly standard Rick-with-pick tone to my ears - and my Japcrap Rickenbugger copy sounds just like that - well, it does with new strings on! As far as I know, Chris Squire Ricks were a very limited edition, are as rare as the proverbial & cost a fortune. They have a vintage-style toaster pup in the neck position (actually a guitar pickup) as opposed to the Hi-Gain on the standard 4003, but the bass in the vid is almost certainly just on the bridge pickup. Nice tone - no comment on the playing... Jon.
Did that mod myself on my old Maya '4001S' , as probably because it's old, it already had the cap http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...ickenbacker+mod Must admit I prefer the vintage tone with the cap, rather than with bypass, but it's nice to have the choice.

 4.
Think I'd be put off by the $90 postage to the UK, and by the customs charge it'll attract if it goes over £18. Also, it's not Japanese, I don't think. I've seen a few guitars & basses with this maple board/mahogany neck/pointy black trc combination (I actually had a thinline Tele copy like this) and they're not-very-good Korean knockoffs. I'd bet a kidney the body's plywood under the solid-black-at-the-edges sunburst, too. Sorry to pee on your fireworks, Kev, but there are loads of better vintage P copies than this around. Jon.
Like you say Jon, loads of them pop up. Often tempted myself, until I realise already got enough P-Basses This one looks a bit better to me http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A:IT&ih=005 Or even this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A:IT&ih=006

J.
I like the look of those Shaftesbury '360'ish basses. They seem to crop up now & again. Has anybody had any experience of these, or played one? Was wondering what they're like. Cheers
 6.
El Homero's thread about timekeeping got me thinking about this. I'm not a real drummer but I've been messing around on kits since soon after I started playing bass and can certainly fool the less musically edumacated. My technique is shoddy but I understand how to create grooves and use the kit in its cunning ways and feel that this is invaluable in how I (almost unconsciously) lock with the drums when playing bass. Who else plays the drums to one degree or another and how has this affected your bass playing? Alex
Started off on drums, but then moved on to guitar then bass (my brother & I swapped). Like you I can still bang out a beat. Always had a drum machine of some sort, & have an appreciation for good techno /'dance' music along with many other genres. This has definitely helped my playing /technique, & affects the way I sometimes approach the instrument.
does the hatke have speaker emulation ? i thought it was just a preamp pedal ?
I recently got a Zoom 503 amp simulator pedal off Ebay for about a tenner. They're discontinued now. Only managed to have a brief mess about with it so far. However, when used in conjunction with BDI21, some of the speaker emulation parameters sound not bad, to my cloth ears. Never been a fan of Zoom stuff, but this is not a bad pedal. Quite handy for home recording bass. I see them come up on ebay fairly frequently. Usually don't go for much more than I paid for mine, sometimes less.
phew - i thought i might be the only one ! i was wondering about a better box...i've still got the casing from my exploded sansamp... have you had yours open yet ? i was wondering how big the board is and if the pots are wired straight to the board (which i suspect) or on flying leads ? if you've not opened yours up yet....i might tonight
Had a brief look inside, vitually everything is fixed to PCB. Planning on having a go at this sometime this month, when (if) I get some spare time. Anticipate having to replace pots, jacksockets, & switch etc. Will be putting mine in fairly decent sized box.... Cheers
took mine down to band practice tonight... to my ears (dons flameproof suit) it sounded better to me that my old sansamp...i kid you not. i think it has less mid-cut.
I second you on that. Tried both, & I prefer the sound of the Behringer. And for the price, you can get at least five BDI21's! Tech 21 Blitzkreig cometh!! My next project,is to put one of mine in a more robust diecast box. There was a really good A/B of both pedals with soundclips on the old website, with quite surprising results. Can anybody remember, or even resurrect this? Cheers
 10.
The "too good to be true" thing does happen - a week or two ago a 1977 Ibanez Les Paul Custom copy, left handed (incredibly rare) one owner from new, not played in 20+ years, original case - appeared on my local Gumtree for £50. These things will see the better side of £500 on Ebay these days. I missed it by about 5 minutes. Jon
It does happen occaisionally. I missed out on an Antoria Jazz Bass @£35 ono, which from the photo looked immaculate, in local free ads paper about a month ago. Was being sold just as I phoned. Don't know why, I didn't offer the seller double there & then! There again I picked up my lovely Rickenfaker (with case) while ago in the same paper for equivalent of £90, as well as Shaftesbury Telebass more recently for £20
 11. And, a real rarity, from the same seller, a Jolana D, made in Czechoslovakia in about 1984/85: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Jolana-D-Bass_W0QQitemZ250170264692QQ If I had the readies right now, I'd bite his arm off for that. J.
Me too! That's a nice bass
 12.
Anyone heard 'Sunrise' by New Order...Hooky in full attack!
That bassline is full-on - he pulls out all the stops on that one! Have you heard 'Broken Promise' from Brotherhood album?
 13.
I only ask because I read a comment on another thread that made my blood boil. Apparently you aren't a real musician unless you go out and play 'in the field' so to speak. A sad misguided statement - wouldn't take much notice... There again everybody's entitled to an opinion. I gig about once/twice a month, which fits in nicely with my life. Sometimes due to other constraints, I find I can't gig at all. It's not a problem. There was a period in my life, albeit about about 10 years ago, when the band I was in did 200+ gigs a year, anywhere. Back then I didn't feel any more of a 'real musician', just quite malnourished & knackered really
i know that paul, the has one of these and is happy with it...anyone else tried one ? i'm going to be playing a radio session soon for a community radio station and will miss the sound of my ampeg pre-amp. i know the di level isn't up to much, i'm curious how noisy it'll be. my sansamp was taken out by an exploding electric mistress a while back and i've not got the funds to replace it.
I've got two in my set up, for different sounds. I think they're quite good, especially considering the price. I've gigged them, etc & never I had an issue with reliability. But, not a fan of the plastic case. It does with the knobs , feel a bit flimsy & fragile. However, I have got two - backup available. I used a Sansamp (on loan) for a while prior to getting BDI21s. To my ears (though I'll probably get shot down by the Tech 21 afficianados) I think the BDI21 is comparable. There was a good A/B on the BDDI & BDI21 with soundclips on the old website, if I remember(?) Quite interesting results.
 15.
Anyone heard of him before.....I think he was in the Skids prior to the Armoury Show. Love the tone he has on this track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV77kAhd10k I think he is playing my favourite bass , Aria Pro SB1000. Also features one of my guitar heroes, the late, great John McGeough. Despite being a Skids & Banshees fan, I don't think the track is upto much but I'm loving the bass.
Good call - a top bass player. Very underrated. What's Russell Webb up to these days? Great shame, Armoury never got the recognition they deserved - brilliant live. John McGeough's death was a sad loss. Another great band from around this time were the Chameleons. Anybody remember them?
 16.
That Rickalike wasn't a Kasuga - everything about it (apart from the dual rods) says Matsumoku to me. Blimey - didn't know that was your ES-175! Not a bad price atm, still time for some eleventh-hour Ebay madness. And you do know that Kasugas weren't made in the Tokai factory, don't you? J.
Yes that's mine. A lovely guitar, but running out of space. Plus, I'm a bassplayer. I understood that Kasuga manufactured guitars for Tokai as well as other suppliers(?) That is according to several sources including vintageguitar.com, & even the Tokai forum.
 17.
Nice - but being a lefty & a bit on the dear side (considering the twin truss Rick copy sold for £170 yesterday - ) means it probably won't sell. Maybe it's the time of year - but JapCrap isn't selling the way it was a couple of months back. Jon.
That's quite true actually. That Rick copy did go quite cheap, considering prices seen in the past months for similar basses. You could have ended up with a matching pair of Kasugas there! Talking of which my Kasuga ES-175 ends today, though I'm not too unhappy with it's current price...
 18. Nice L/H Maya Jazz, looks in good condition. If it's anything like my P-Bass & Rickenfaker - a lovely instrument, worth the price IMHO. Shame it's a lefty! 19.
Yes, I've used AuctionSniper in the past and a very good piece of software it is. BUT ... Firstly it takes all the fun out of it, and secondly I always bid my highest bid first time - I've never seen the point in starting at £10, wait to get outbid, put in £30, wait to get outbid etc. etc. I have no qualms about sniping being unethical. For a sniper to beat me, he has to be prepared to outbid me. Simple really. I don't worry about being beaten by £2 either. It's not really £2, is it? If I raise my bid from £121.30 to £125.30, that's when I discover that his bid was higher than mine, his now stands at £127.30 and I'm STILL being beaten by £2! Do the research, set the bid, never change your mind. There'll be another one along in a minute.
I agree with you it can take the fun out of it. But, for someone like me who has no self control with regard to impulse buying (according to the wife), I find it instills some descipline. I'm not tempted to keep on bidding, with compulsion to win the auction... I'm probably a bit sad!
 20.
Mine was the £121.30 so I got pipped for £2. I was playing last night, so unavailable to raise my bid, but I wouldn't have anyway. Nice as it was, I suspect that it was more of a conversation piece than a player. Now if it had been a very early piece by ROGER Rossmeissl ...
I used to have same problem. Have you ever tried 'sniping'? Some find this practice 'unethical'. But it saves hanging around the computer sometimes at two in the morning.
 21.
At work and googling it will be unsly (I type this in notepad and rapidly paste in) But soaking them in a tube of alcohol based solvent is supposed to work. Sounds right, will soak out the grease and not corrode like boiling, oull the out, wipe off the swollen out the coils gunk and hang them to dry outside.
Hi Oli, How's it going mate? I soak mine in Isopropyl about once every six months, in cut to length metal tubes. It does get most of the crap out, & doesn't stress the string in the same way as boiling.
 22.
Check out the new single by a bass supergroup Freebase Considering this has Hooky, Andy Rourke & Mani playing bass on it i'm afraid I expected a lot more...it doesn't go anywhere.
Jury's still out for me. I think this track is still work in progress, with no vocals. Apparently, quite a few guest vocalists involved in this project, including (unfortunately) Robbie Williams. All three of them have got a lot to live up to. Hopefully it will be good. Let's wait & see.......
 23.
Hey Nick how's it going?
OK thanks, had computer problems. Did a gig & tried wristband; it kept moving around, sliding up & down - I have quite thin wrists. Wound got worse - my son reckons I've now got lepresy! I like the height of my bass as it is (below the waist). So I think I'm going to relearn/alter my technique. In the meantime, I'm having to back to fingers for all our songs until my injury heals! I've suffered minor abrasions in the past, but nothing as bad as this. I think this is partly down to having an excellent new drummer, he keeps me on my toes - bastard As a result, sometimes the whole rythmn section might be going a little bit too full on! I bet Dee Dee Ramone never had this problem. Thanks to everyone for advice & tips.
 24.
same here - I won't have a guitar or bass with a hard edge or pretty binding. and why should I? conform to the instrument? gimme a break. get one of those heavy metal studded wristbands and let the stupid thing know who has to conform to who.
Along with the vaseline mentioned earlier, I'm going down the wristband road, together with a matching headband like Mark Knopfler! No seriously, I think I'm going to have to alter my technique. It may sometimes look cool slamming into the bass, giving it 100% etc, but at the moment my wrist which is presently oozing pus from a very inflamed sore isn't!
 25.
does the P-Bass have the bridge ashtray in place?
No. It's not the bridge that is causing abrasion, but edge of body.
