1.
Check out a March 2005 Bassplayer magazine interview with Fred Thomas, Ray Brundidge and Bootsy Collins about playing for James Brown. www.bassplayer.com/article/james-browns-bassists/mar-05/3352
Cheers - much appreciated!
  2. After watching this now a few times, I have to concede (IMO) it as being genius. Infinitely more entertaining than watching a seven string bass rendition of some Bach, or some jazz wig-out etc.... Brilliant!
  3.
So.... what were you in for? Crimes against Michael Anthony?
I wish... Touché !
  4.
F##k me, character assasination or what?!!!! MA has NEVER professed to being the best bass player in the world and I doubt anyone would begrudge him a drink during a gig. But for someone to post a YT video under the headline 'DRUNK BASS SOLO' whilst said poster is (probably) serving at f##king McDonalds is a little sad. He's a showman. We know he can play better and we know other can play better.................... who cares!!! It's still Michael Anthony who will earn more in a month off the back of Jump than we can in a year!!!!! And to top it all, he's a really humble guy, if you read what is being said about the latest VH reunion. Also....... it's over ELEVEN years old this video.... original poster..... where have you been???? Jon bon Jovi was wearing Leather & Lace and Alec John Such was sticking his pout out so far it could've knocked out Ricky Hatton!! It's about the show!
Sorry, if I touched a raw nerve - no offence intended. I just found this incredibly funny, & it seems a few others agree. Not intended as a character assassination, & if as you say he will earn more in a month than all of us in a year(?), then I doubt he would even he would care much about a bit of harmless banter at his expense.. As for myself, & your question of my whereabouts for the last eleven years? HMP - so please cut me some slack!! Cheers
  5. Beautiful bass...
  6.
I'm watching this and I can't stop laughing!!! Looks like a competitor from the World Air Guitar Championships, especially with that cape... Now, towards the end he looks like a bear that's just escaped from a zoo. Though I must admit, I have seen him play worse solos than this. Gotta show love for the JD bass though.
Not that au fait with VH - he's played worse solos than this?! It's funny, scary & a bit unnerving. Creepy...
  7. Not sure what to make of this?! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ewsHwVOyyE Cringeworthy or genius?

    Lell Parametric EQ

Hello Kev, I've heard of LEL. My wife's Russian, so I do go over there & Ukraine a fair bit. And, when I do, I check out anything musical, etc Link on LEL parametric here, yours(?) http://www.meatexz.com/cheesyguitars/effect-lel_ep.html Some more (& not so) cool looking Soviet FX here! http://www.meatexz.com/cheesyguitars/effects.html Cheers
  9. I tried Rosetti. I'm afraid I have to agree with first post - thought they were terrible. Did have a dead E-string, which wasn't really a problem to me. But, they did seem really harsh, ripped my fingers to shreds. Binned them & gave away the second set I had. Only really change my strings once a year (at the most) anyway, & even then usually just clean them in alcohol for a bit of a 're-life', & to remove any gunk I can. At the moment, I favour quite a played-in tone, especially when recording. Used Elites for as long as I can remember.
  10.
I feel its cheating a bit. I felt i should have tried a bit harder to play the P as it was.
You should feel guilty, what you're proposing doing is sacrilege!

  12.
How about you get picked with someone then you have to go and find and listen to/buy/get hold of the last 5 tracks/ 5 different artists tracks that the person you are matched with bought? An review them!.... or does that idea suck?
Excellent modification of John's brilliant idea. I'm up for that, if this is still on - please (whoever is co-ordinating this) put my name as well in the hat. Someone's in for a stonking (IMHO) 'recommendation list' from me!

    Must haves

Definitely a tuner (if you don't use a rack one), & a versatile/tweakable 'bass friendly' fuzz that you like the sound of.
  14.
Paul Simenon - Because he went out of his way not to be recognised as a muso. 'London Calling' has some great stuff but 'Give em enough Rope' has the best Bass and Drum sound I've ever heard. Only one biog of the Clash mentions the fact that they rented top flight guitars for this record after the sonic defeciancies of the first album. Paul had a WAL - (Joe had a 335) if you listen carfully it is a very compressed Bass sound - superb on Julie's Been working for the Drug Squad. Barry Adamson from Magazine who alas is probably overshadowed by the Best Lyricist and best Guitarist of that era.
Good call on Barry Adamson, he's first mention on this thread & rightly so. He used a Ibanez Rickenfaker for much of his time in Magazine, as opposed to Simonon, as you say using a topend WAL, only at producer Sandy Pearlman's insistence. I'm going to add Chris Layhe (Icicle Works) to the roster!
  15.
Potentially controversial, I know, but I just don't have any empathy towards amplification at all. I have a lovely collection of instruments. And I have some things I plug them into. They're made by people who know what they're doing (Trace/Hartke/Ampeg/QSC/Peavey) but the things fill me with no joy at all, to the extent that I'd consider amp buying a chore and would be more likely to buy another bass whilst trying amps out. Do I need help? What type of GAS do you specialise in? Basses or Amps? Or are you one of those well-rounded individuals who likes BOTH?! Please relate your experiences!
Both! Though at the moment, I'm veering more towards amps. The older, wierder & more obscure the better.

    A/B/Y Pedal
I'm after a decent A/B/Y. I've been looking at a few, my ideal choice would be to able to switch between two signal chains and to combine them both. The ideal pedal should have two switches to go between A and B and the other switch to combine them (which rules out the boss). It needs to be able to run off a power supply (which rules out the ART one as well). Any ideas? Didn't DHA make one or am I just hoping? Thanks
Not sure who makes one like that. But here's a passive A/B/Y, I made earlier that I use - might match what you're after(?) http://aronnelson.com/gallery/v/TheBigMan-...abyled.jpg.html If you can't make it yourself, somebody should be able to do it cheap - not much to it.

    Bass DI
So Im looking at getting a new Bass DI - im wanting to have a clean signal from my bongo bass going into the DI. I need a signal to go from the DI to the desk but also another signal to go through my effects and into my amp. So do I need a decent DI with parellel outputs? Im looking at the Radial Engineering passive DI as well as the sansamp (although ive heard rumours the sansamp just gives your bass all bass and treble) Any help tips would be most grateful! Im looking at anything from as cheap as chips to £150ish Thanks! Joshbasscana
Hi Josh, Cheap as chips would be Behringer BDI21. Some say output levels are a bit low, but I found the same with Sansamp. Having said that, it works fine for me - I like to combine it with mic'd sound. If you don't like it you can always flog it again on ebay, with litle loss. Cheers
  18.
there's a soldering iron going on my christmas list then
Good on you. First one can sometimes be a pig. But they get easier in time!
  19.
was it one of these
Should imagine it was very similar to this one I built while ago: http://aronnelson.com/gallery/v/DRAGONFLY-...ZZ_001.jpg.html Cracking classic fuzz & a piece of p*ss to make, especially if you follow step-by-step instructions below: http://aronnelson.com/gallery/v/DRAGONFLY-...lbum20/album21/ May be better than a Zvex(?) - Dunno
  20.
I looked at the schematics and it looks like it uses a combination of pickup impedance + internal capacitor to cut some of the higher frequencies. I theory a resistor in series should help. I would use a trimpot inside the unit with an active/passive switch that remove the trimpot from the circuit. [codebox] \ ------------o o---- | | | -------------+---> [OUT] | | | v [IN]>-----+--\/\/\/\/- 1M [/codebox]
That's a good idea Max. Though I don't use any active basses myself, so fortunately don't have that issue. Should say I've got few home made fuzz pedals already, including one knob colorsound clone, Univox squarewave,Red llama.....They all sound good to me. It's just I'm intrigued by Wooly Mammoth, probably due to exhorbitant price, & the fact there's hardly anything in it! Some good reviews on Harmony...Don't believe the hype(?) Guess I'll find out for myself without shelling out £150
  21. From the replies, I gather not too many people keen on the Wooly Mammoth(?) It's not cheap to buy, though I reckon I can at least build it for less than a tenner. Guess I'll find out myself....
  22. Hi all, Has anybody had any experience of a Wooly Mammoth? Found schematic for it , & I'm considering building one over Christmas period. Would be grateful for any comments/opinions before I go down road of converting schematic to veroboard layout. Many thanks
  23.
I think someone did nominate him for Big New Prinz. What about Middle Class Revolt - not their most celebrated album but the bass playing throughout (Behind the Counter! M5! Junk Man!) is solider than a solid thing. Sorry, fresh out of similes today.
Love the sound he got - Musicman/Fender & Ampeg with pick. 'Bombast' from This Nation's Saving Grace another good one.
  24.
The Fall Though they sounded better when they just had the one S. Hanley.
Now there's a bassist - good call! Surely one for the underrated thread?
  25.
Bassassin - I am the worst ebayer in the world. Having had the winning bid on your Jazz copy for three days I forgot to look at it yesterday. Grrr. You'd have made a couple of quid more as well if I'd had a brain.
There was(is) another Franconia Jazz on ebay. Albeit not as nice as one Jon was selling, needs a bit of tlc....
