1.
try putting a bit of vaseline on the wrist before you play.
Many thanks for all the suggestions. Off to buy a tub of vaseline this evening! Fingerless glove might be a bit too 'metally' for me, & can't help thinking an armsock or bandage possibly looks even more 'self-harmish' - I dunno(?) Failing the vaseline, may have to try reigning in my right-hand pick style. I now understand why I've seen other guitarists like Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood & Joe Strummer with their arms seemingly strapped up. Thanks again
  2. Hello, Does anybody suffer from same affliction as me, in that after playing with a pick for some period of time, I get horrible, (& painful) lacerations on my wrist (?) I get this after playing my Rickenfaker & edgebound Ibanez, but not with P-Bass. So I know it's down to body contour, bass height, & also playing style. I have not played with a pick so exclusively for a long time - I'm more accustomed to fingers. Guess my question is; in others' experience, does/will the skin eventually toughen up? I've tried long sleeve shirts, which have not helped.... Any suggestions welcome please. At the moment my wrist looks like a bad example of self-mutilation(!) Thanks
  3. Hello, We're playing Swindon Shuffle Stage @ 15-50hrs http://www.swindon.gov.uk/artsandculture/a...ndonshuffle.htm http://www.sugarhillfestival.co.uk/index.php First gig with new drummer (joined last week!) Please come along & have a peek, if you're already there. Would be nice to meet some fellow Basschatters. Cheers
  4. Trace Elliot GP7 & WEM Dominator MK1 Bass - together or either. Covers all sounds I need.
  5.
Hi, does anyone know how to add an LED to a DOD250 overdrive pedal. I figure I need a new footswitch, an LED, a resistor and some wire. I can solder OK but I'm not sure how to hook it up. I've searched the web to no avail. TIA. Peace
Hi Kurt, DOD 250 is a top pedal, built one & use it as a boost. Makes a nice change from usual Tubescreamers. You need a 3PDT footswitch along with led etc, replacing DPDT currently installed. Following link to MXR distortion is an example on how to wire it all up. http://aronnelson.com/gallery/album06/mxr_dist_plus_001 Also, DOD 250 for reference http://aronnelson.com/gallery/album06/DOD_...VE_250_VERO_001 For any other info, etc on pedals, schematics, excellent forum too, try: http://www.diystompboxes.com/wpress/ Hope this helps, happy modding
  6.
This isn't a dig at you Nick but a general comment about flagging up eBay bargains. It's fine and dandy flagging up dodgy dealers or basses that look squiffy. It's also very generous to let other BCers know about BIN bargains that may have just been listed or ones that are maybe hidden away (listed in incorrect categories etc.). However, some folks who have their eye on a bass or piece of equipment that they're hoping no body else has seen, may well be miffed at having their 'treasure' flagged up for all and sundry! Those of us who post on this section of BassChat are probably regular eBay users and at times you come across something and think, 'I'll keep my eye on that, might go cheap enough'. The last thing you need is every other BCer watching/bidding on the same item. I hope you can appreciate that you may well not want that Guild (coincidently, neither do I) but someone may well be seething that it's been flagged up. I'd certainly be well hacked off if it had been a Warwick that I thought was a bargain. I can see an argument that says well Nick/whoever may have spotted a bargain Warwick/Glockenklang/Accugroove etc and posted on here hence I get to hear about it but I'd then be bidding up against my fellow BCers... I'd rather hope that another bassist (possibly yourself) might have spotted it and picked up a bargain. As I say it's just a general comment about posting re. eBay items and certainly not a personal attack on you, as I'm sure that you were doing it for all the right reasons. Though very well intentioned it's not personally what I'd want to encourage; does that make sense or do you/others disagree?
Warwickhunt, You're totally correct, agree with your comments, & I apologise. I buy things regularly on Ebay myself, & appreciate & understand where you're coming from. Posting in this fashion is clearly not going to enable anyone to bag a bargain.... Thanks Nick
  7. Lovely looking B402 Active, at low price now (£144). Who knows, what it will go for(?) Item : 260149514491 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A:IT&ih=016
  8. Not sure who's most mad; the seller or the bidders?!
  9.
+1 nearly all of the above. Sound good enough, last forever, cheap as chips. Just the name isn't fashionable? Goodness knows why, it's not as if they brought out the "Jade Goody Signature Model" is it Hamster
I've had several Peaveys. All good amps, & do take a hammering. I now use either Trace or an old WEM, depending on what sound I want. But, would have no problem going back to, or playing through one. If it gets you the tone you want & is loud enough, who cares if it's a fashionable or not. Most members of audiences who aren't anoraks, don't really care, so long as the sound is not awful. If you were that bothered by the name, you could always take the horrible, dated logo off the front grill. That's what I always used to do.
  10. Just been listening to some old Suede stuff. Forgot about Mat Osman - some really tasteful bass runs.
  11. I quite like it, is it long scale? Looks it from the photo. There is a possibility it's origin claims are genuine. God, I hate the Stereophonics though! Got my own peice of memoriala here http://www.mdmarchive.co.uk/archive/showar...260&bid=444 Maybe I should whack it on Ebay(?)
  12. Bit of a project this one, across the 'pond' Unfortunately seller wont despatch overseas. Still may be of interest to any stateside brethren of the Rickenfaker pursuasion: http://cgi.ebay.com/SET-Neck-1970s-Japan-S...1QQcmdZViewItem Item No. 150149812438 Cheers
  13.
A nice neck-through Maya: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A:IT&ih=008 Item no. 180146974326 I think it's these that are more usually seen badged as Shaftesbury. J.
Different to my Maya. But if it's anything like mine as far as playability & sound, then it's a lovely bass. Bit like waiting for buses, or fishing - this Rickenfaker spotting lark... Nothing decent for ages then two prime specimens popping up!
  14.
It sounds like the guitarist is just trying to push your buttons - don't bother going down to his level. If it winds you up tell him he's an idiot and find another guitarist - there are ten a penny after all.
I agree. Without intellectualising, the guitarist sounds a bit of a dickhead. Create an inter-band coup, & oust the tosser!
  15. Surely a scamster(?) Interesting feedback profile http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1975-Fender-Black-St...1QQcmdZViewItem

  18.
Last time I went to the Bristol SC they had a very good stock of quality basses, I was impressed... but I got attitude by the bucketload from the guy behind the till when I asked for some strings. He tried to sell me Rotosounds and then implied that I was some know-nothing bozo because I said that I didn't like Rotos. I left the shop stringless, haven't been back. Went to Rikkaxe and was sold what I asked for.
Hi Rich, Hope you're well, still loving the Octave Multiplexer - cheers. Had two very different experiences in Bristol SC. First time was quiet evening (straight from the allotment) to get some Elites, waited what for what seemed ages, for someone to reluctantly finish a phone call, & then 'push the Rotosound' not even the gauge I wanted. Do they have shares in this brand, or what? Second visit, very different. Had come straight from work (wearing suit). My wife had an interview across the road, so was only really in SC to use their carpark - customers don't get clamped. They couldn't help me enough. Three chaps (all really helpful) bringing me one expensive bass after an another to try out. Made it quite clear from the start that I was only browsing. having a mooch around, but loads of useful advice etc. Felt a bit guilty not buying anything! I still think it would be a shame if Sound Control folded - it's not nice for anyone to lose their job. All the best, & say hello to Wilko.
  19. Bach '51 P-Bass with rosewood fretboard. Nice & cheap, & makes a change from my usual Jap stuff.
  20.
I have to say because Motown / soul etc is not my bag, I haven't really heard them. These guys are obviously your heroes and inspired you to pick up the bass. I have different heroes Mick Karn, Peter Hook,JJ Brunel, Andy Rourke, etc. but I appreciate other genres such as Percy Jones, Bernard Edwards, Larry Graham. No doubting these guys were awsome it's just not my thing. I'm sure James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt were geniuses but I just don't get the whole Motown / Philly sound thing' just as I can see why people would hate The Smiths because of Morissey but Rourke / Marr are just amazing musicians.
I know where you're coming from, my background's pretty much same as yours. However, in recent years I have started to appreciate more & more of the old soul & motown classics. Joy Division (Hook) were definitely influenced by Northern Soul, especally the rhythms. Andy Rourke (Smiths) was also a soul boy, & well into funk. Japan (Mick Karn) covered Smokey Robinson's 'Second that Emotion'. Even, Mani of Primal Scream's favourite alltime bassplayer is James Jamerson. Why not give Motown a second listen? I did, & found some real gems.
  21.
Paul Simonon...end of debate.
Mani as a close second?

    HH amps
....I'm always keeping an eye for one of those old heads.
That makes two of us. I used to have a V-S Bassamp head, the one with 'valve sound' switch. Brilliant amp, underated IMHO. Why did I get rid of it(?!) I'm also always on the lookout for one. I was told that the bass player of Fratellis uses a H/H(?)
  23.
Great, please come and say hello. Most of the acts are cancer survivors including myself so there a few different types of acts. I think there is an Elvis band. I understand that there is stuff going on all day. We are a 5 piece rock band playing covers in our own way, never the same twice! Timface is on bass and I play lead. check this out - www.cancerresearchuk.org/relay Dave
Dave, All the best for your gig tomorrow (bump). Good cause. An issue that has, or will affect most people in one way or another, at some point in their life. Nick
  24.
Not sure about fat sounding but you could try the seymour duncan spb-1 vintage for p bass http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...tageforPBassreg , it is based on the 1957 precision bass pick up so is definately vintage sounding
I tried a fair few pickups including SD 'Hot', Q.P., Dimarzio, Kent Armstrong & EMG on my Tokai. Eventually settling on SPB-1, which is probably closest sounding to it's original stock P/U, but with more clarity. To my ears, it has a nice warm vintage tone. However, will probably give Wizard a go, when/if I get round to changing my Maya P-Bass.
  25.
Up to a point - if the Rick Police see it, it'll still go, because it's a copy of a copyright design. Putting a fake nameplate on it brands him a total w@nker, in my unprejudiced opinion. J.
That is a bit sad, fitting a fake nameplate. Who are these sorts of people trying to kid? Jap crap should be worn with pride! Is it really superior to Ibanez, & Kasuga? Come on (?!)
