1.
There seems to be an abundance of frets on the Rosewood that the Maple lacks...
that's not it either! the necks are the same, I'm just holding the maple a touch lower, both 24 frets.
2.
only god knows because that birdseye is lovely.. im a sucker for it... always makes a bass look awsome and boutique.. i take it you prefer the slight tone difference....
No, that's not the reason, though there is the slightest hint it is a bit darker sounding. The bass body is maple too, and the necks have graphite rods, so it is quite a bright bass. there is another reason..... (what a tease, eh!)
3. So, I've swapped my lovely birdseye maple fngerboard neck for a plainer Pau Ferro board neck. Why on earth would I do that?
4. Another one here. I think it started with playing the violin at a young age - you don't get left handed violins! I play a drum kit set up right handed but play open handed (lh on the hi-hat) like Simon Phillips, but with nowhere near the same results.... I decided to do it that way mainly that if I ever had to use anyone else's kit I wouldn't have to faff about too much, though the occasion has never arisen, as I'm not good enough to play live!
5. I think you've nothing to lose, the neck's had it anyway so you might as well give it a bash and stand a chance of learning something. If you manage to ruin it even more, it's not like you've lost anything! Do a diary so can all learn vicariously!
6. Mmm, I'd like to see that too. I've played Steve's own basses and they're quite nice - I had to be told they were 35" as they played like "normal" This must be extremely rare, as I don't think Steve made a whole load of 'em. Good luck with the sale! Jules
7. I reckon it will help if you can bolt the pickups more tightly to the body. One of my pickups foam had got too compressed and a bit loose and would squeal at volume. A lot better now with more foam jammed in.
8. I had an odd sound at the nut on open D after i recut the nut slot a bit lower - I'd got the slot angled ok and there was just enough break angle, but it buzzed open, and wasn't immediately obvious why. In the end I worked it out and cut the slot even lower but with a too-narrow round file - the slot was a bit too wide or flat bottomed, and cutting it a fraction deper but narrower gave the string just enough support to stop buzzing when open. This was a very subtle thing, but may be worth checking out in your case.
9. I did a repair on one of these for a friend, and I have to say these aren't bad at all for a decent sounding amp-around-the-house. Not the smallest, but proper bass tone. You can't go wrong for £30 - good luck with the sale.
10. try a Mole Wrench, or Vice Grip (same thing) or find somone who has a metal jawed vice. You'll get plenty of leverage from the length of the neck. I cant see that this would fail to work. Cheers MBA
11.
I don't think he said it needs 1000 watts
Agreed - that implies the cab is not sensitive, which I don't think is the case. There's a difference between needs, and can handle 1000 watts
12. The first "proper" gig I ever did at 16 or 17 ('77/78) at a youth club in Enfield (full PA and lights!) we opened with a cover of Fohat Digs Holes In Space off Camembert Electrique. The punks in the audience weren't that impressed......!
13.
Isn't that what we all do when we hit the stage(?) Isn't that the point(?)
What? and take the showing off work from lead guitarists and singers.... Their Union would be furious!
14. Studio 110 is a fine practice amp
15.
I`ve always thought that their hats were quite nice. Oh, thats fedoras, I`ll get my coat......
And take that ridiculous hat with you!
16. We used to call it "showing off" in the old days.
17. My band, The New Moon are playing our melodic psyche-tinged pop tonight in the Chester Arms just off the Iffley road. We should have guest flautist Frei Zinger tonight on a couple of numbers. Headlining are Three Minute Tease, comprising Anton Barbeau from Sacremento, Ca featuring rhythm section of Andy Metcalfe and Morris Windsor, formerly of The SoftBoys and Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians. I think it is free to get in too, what's not to like? Cheers Jules
18.
Is there not a form you have to fill in if you are sending something out that will be coming back before you send it?
I'm sure you didn't intend it, but it sounds like a time travel paradox....
19. Plays and records fine but Freeview tuner not working. Ideal for copying your old VCR tapes to DVD though... Collect from Didcot, Oxon. Only 4 years old, can't bring myself to take it to the dump as it's still a useful bit of kit. With manual and remote. PM me, as I rarely check this forum. All gone now! Move along, nothing more to see!
20. I wonder if they'd give me a special rate as my Band is called The New Moon...
21. "now we can't "smoke" at yours, I had to have a load before I came round" (for rehearsal in my garage)
22. re the True Temperament fret thingies
Another product in the long list of Snake Oils produced by people who believe without understanding and bought by people with more money than sense.
I think in this case that's a bit disingenuous, I'm sure the guy who came up with that system has a better understanding of tune, temperament etc. than most. You should probably state this as your opinion. edit: spelling!
23. Hi Dave I just wondered what lacewood is like to work with? I think it is a lovely looking wood (I have a lacewood bass), I imagine it is a bit like mahogany, but does the lighter grain cut differently? BTW, I think the inset fingerboard is a cracking idea, I've not seen it before. Cheers Jules
24. sounds like a string tree would do the trick here
