1. The other aspect is do you know what limits the venue are working too? maybe they can't push too much because they are working to sound limit factors. Are they working with poor quality system? I'm in venue's everyday looking at PA and you'd be surprised how many have blown drivers.... Drivers that have been replaced with non manufacturer product and cheap far eastern ones because of budgets... Just because the PA has a name on the front doesn't mean its got the components inside. I always find these threads amusing that muso's often think they know me than the engineer (which in some cases may be)
2. Me too..... We cover 'Shake everything you've got', 'Cold Sweat' and 'House Party'
3. I think it depends on what you consider the live scene to be in your area...... Here in Essex on the cover band scene, it's full of what I like to call the 'Macdonalds Menu' (there's one on every corner) bands...... Same set up of 4/5 piece bands all playing rock/classic rock/Indie.... all playing very similar sets with the majority playing a large chuck of the same songs.... I would love to go out and watch live music locally but none of it appeals to me and its all the same.
4. Hi We have a studio in Ongar, Essex details to the Facebook link below Great live rooms with dual control areas and dedicated Drum room. Either Full live recording or tracked https://www.facebook.com/CatmanBoogie
5.
Because I like to use my tone, not the tone prescribed to me by the soundman, and also the sheer fact that the same is done for guitarists. Guitar speakers are almost always miked up to capture the overall sound of their rig, so why should it not be the same for the bass? Our rig works in the same way after all...
Guitar is difficult through DI though as opposed to bass. Have you heard a DI'd distortion.... not nice.
6. Yah its not huge even though thats a guitar on top.... still useable if thats your bag
7. I bet its not as big as you think.......
8. This would work well https://youtu.be/zY7f5nxuKts
9.
The left/right point is a contentious one with subs! Apart from that brief period in the '60s when the like of Cream and The Beatles were going "wow! we have stereo, let's stick the bass on that side and the drums on the other", almost all music is recorded with instruments with sub content down the middle rather than panned. And then in mastering true lows get tidied into the middle because it works better on playback. If you're mastering for vinyl you actually have to run the lows in mono or risk the needle jumping. So I can't see there being problems with feeding a sub off a left or right send for recorded music. When dealing with live bands it's rare to do any significant panning and the bass and kick should always be down the middle. If you pan live music like you would recorded music then everything sounds wrong for the closer members of the audience, especially as the stage monitoring bleed will contribute to an imbalance out front. So I'd like to think that the lack of a stereo summing input on the sub is a non-issue.. Incidentally the first customer pair of FR800s was gigged last night!
I was referring to using a one sub setup..... I would say for live use not an issue as per your post but if using for DJ purposes and I would say that if the cabs perform as you say they would then these would then DJ's would be interested.
10.
Ok... not good then. I was talking about normal subs and tops.
I get you..... yes because you would have separate left and right stacks.
11. We learnt it yesterday and gigged it last night.... was surprised how many people knew it already
12. Great site.... I've only just signed up to his site but its been great and very intuitive
13.
Assuming L and R main signal out of the Desk... into Sub 1 via passthru to Top 1... so that side gets the depth of the sub. Personally, I wouldn't even be pan the signals ... and then on the other signal I'd have a pass filter to the top... OR pan the signals to bais the side.. Anyway, what I meant was the tops or subs need a pass thru option of the cab inputs..??
Yes I understand this.... but on the rear panel of these cabs you only have one input.... therefore you cannot run a stereo/leftright into them, therefore you would need a mono sum mix from the desk
14.
I just wanted to repeat that the FR800s contain their own subs, in effect! The LF800(s) are there to increase max LF SPL, not to go lower. So if you are using two FR800s as your PA system you already have two subs. If you are using two FR800s and one LF800 you have three (3!!!) subs, not one. If you are using two FR800s and two LF800 you have four (FOUR!) subs. Just wanted to make that clear! If you're arguing about other PA rigs with conventional tops and subs then do carry on - but if you're talking about the Barefaced PA approach then re-read the previous paragraph.
How can they contain their own sub if its a two way box?
15.
Really...?? Would have assumed a simple pass thru otherwise you need a separate signal..??
How do you mean.... unless you pass through from one of the mid/high but then you are only getting that from one channel of a stereo mix.... may be missing some info in the signal in that case
16. So if you are running one sub, you need a separate feed for this.... No option to sum two input sources (from a stereo left/right feed) to then feed the top cabs.
17.
Akai Deep Impact. Or don't believe the hype and try the Digitech, Boss, korg, ehx, or any other brands. I could go into it the nuances and subjective elements of sound but I just didn't have the time.
The Akai is still a hard act to follow..... I've had most of the synth pedals out there and they all have their limitations though the Akai is one of the only ones that a) sounds like the synth bass sound in your head and tracks well even on a 5 string. I've not tried a Korg G5 unit though I hear they are ok.
18.
Bet that was fun on the bike..
He had a big Harley.... used to strap the MB to the back and bass in a soft case on his back.....
19.
So, do you think it's the MB200 built in chorus he used on that fretless sound? Seems very similar to me, although I've not had one for a few years.
No idea as I never asked / At the time he was using this great double bass that had a lions head on it.... great looking instrument.
20. I hung out with John on several occasions when he had his gaff in Chessington. Really nice bloke, very generous. I was looking after Gallien Krueger at the time and he was a big fan of the MB combo. I helped him out with a replacement unit after the one he had fell off the back of his motorbike one evening on the way to Abbey Rd Studios...
21. If you are on linked in, make contact with this guy.... what he doesn't know about overseas instrument manufacturing, isn't worth knowing - https://www.linkedin.com/pub/damon-waller/37/a42/543
22. If they want your band to play because they 'want your band' then I would expect some payment. If they just want a band.... there will always be bands who will play for 'Exposure'
