2.
Is it just me and the gigs I go to, because I rarely see slap bass playing on the pub gig circuit and I haven't seen any slap on the theatre or arena gigs I've been to. I guess the irony is that the most rabid Mark King fans are probably "bedroom" players themselves!! I think Mark King is a great player but I prefer his finger style playing rather than the incessant "bag of spanners in a washing machine" style.
I mostly only ever see Rock/classic Rock/ Indie bands being advertised in pubs.... rarely do you see any that would perform music that contains any length of slap material.... No slap in Dakota, Sex on fire or Zombie
3.
In fact, they could do with a good slapping, Jay.
;O)
4.
A lot of people like Mark King**. There is no doubting that he has been tremendously influential over the years and a hell of a lot of people picked up the bass in the first place because of him. Myself included, to a fairly large degree. There are also an awful lot of people who don't like Mark King, and some of them express this opinion in very forthright terms. It's not 'proper' bass, sounds like a canteen of cutlery being thrown down a metal staircase, that sort of thing. I can't say I've ever seen a King fan telling people to give up playing bass or call people 'ignorant', for simply not liking the sound of it. They take it on the chin because they accept that at the end of the day it is all opinion and not worth getting all indignant about. Someone doesn't like the same music/player as you. Big deal. If we all liked the same stuff, it would be a tremendously dull world. Some people love Jaco's playing, some people find it fairly unbearable, some people are somewhere in the middle. Accept it and move on. ** please note: I am not in any way seeking to compare MK and JP as players. Just thought I'd better clear that up straightaway.
Ahhh but..... Mark King or Flea?
5. O h another I've just been reminded of...... Mumford and sons..... Bloody awful live!
6.
De Le Soul Thought they where great, loved their studio work , but when I went it was like a couple of people talking whilst playing an old radio
When was this? See them last year at Glasters and they were awesome.... Full band RnB type set up.... had the whole crowd in their hands
7. Yeah I'd agree..... I like to dig in and the sound that you get from that initial hit.... I wouldn't want the signal being restricted so that I couldn't obtain that sound
8. My fave to play with the band is 'I Want Your Love' by Chic, Not complex at all but as Bilbo mentions in his post.... it's about getting the groove. Harder than you think.
9.
Although I just can't help but think there's something fundamentally wrong with the whole set up if I'm honest. If you're only playing small gigs (no stage etc.) do you really need such an elaborate monitoring system that so effectively disconnects you from the audience? Why not just use normal monitors (wedges or stand mounts) for vocals only, sort the backline levels out on stage and wear decent earplugs?
Well it gets rid of monitors on the floor for a start.... that people usually tend to fall over in a pub. less to carry.... an IEM system takes a minute to set up and can be done with a single cable. Your whole set up is less prone to feedback as you have less interference into the mic/PA.
10.
It's a darned expensive way to get audience ambience into iem's, in my view. Maybe for recording stuff in the Albert Hall, but overkill for pubs and such. An ordinary 'shotgun' condenser mic, or even a humble lavalier mic would give more than adequate results, for a couple of tenners. Just sayin'...
I guess it depends on how serious you take the set up..... spend £1000 on an iem system for the band and feed the ambient mix with a £30 mic.
11.
On the floor? iI'll just get trodden on with my band/guests.
Put it right at the front of the stage.... they are fairly roadworthy
12. Don't put it on a mic stand..... the idea of a boundary mic is that it needs a surface to collect the reflected sound from. We find either right in front of the stage works best
13. Use of a boundary mic is very much recommended. Just make sure you only feed the IEM and not the FOH. We use one of these - http://www.electrovoice.com/product.php?id=109
14. We are use iPads for individual mixes through our IEM system but to be honest we have stored two or three scenes that we are all happy with so not much adjustment needed. We are using QU-32 and GLD desks from Allen and heath. The iPad feature is ok but for proper mixing FOH it's a bit pointless. It's nice to have it connected to the network so you can just grab and jump out front if mixing from elsewhere. I've found using a stylus instead of fingers is better especially if mixing outside
15. I'd be inclined to ask why it is your singer is asking you to turn down. If you are so quiet that you cannot hear yourself while the drums are playing, maybe its that your vocal monitoring for the singer is not adequate?
16. Or if you want something a bit cheaper, I just bought one of these for the drummer.... works fantastic http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_hpa_in_ear.htm?sid=b9168b06eaecb3ed5c0c4ea631fdafbc
17.
Very nice! A few questions if you could pass them on... How did he get the keys replaced? What stand is that?!
I believe its a special edition from Korg..... I think the stand is from Ultimatesupport.com
18. My mate has just set this up for a tour -
19. Its funny.... one of the first bands around these parts to start doing this on the local pub circuit who have a large following do this track but basically they use a backing track with all the 'Doo Doo' parts and brass and extra vocals.... I was shot down on a local Facebook page for saying that its was cheeky doing it this way. We do it in my band with the keys player playing all the parts... works well
