1. Just in case anybody who isn't going really wanted to, here's a quick summary of what the gig will be like: Clackety clackety, clickety clackety, clackety clack, clickerty clack. <lame singing> Clickety clackety clack, clackety click <lame singing> Clickety clickety clack, clackety clack, clackety clack, clickety clack <more lame singing> Lights go up
  2.
IMO Andy Fairweather Lowe's "solo" was far more interesting and inventive then the recycled blues licks paraded by the other two guitarists.
Was just about to say that. Every time i've seen RW i love it when Andy FL lets rip, first time he did windmills and everything! RE The Bass, i'd prefer the Sunburst Precision he used to use, that's the Fender bass he's known for playing
  3.
Thing is, originals bands might not be motivated by showing off to an audience, or by making money for themselves or someone else. The more those are the motivation, the less likely I am to enjoy their music. So yes, bands that are aiming for audiences and money are killing music, because music I don't like is dead to me. In fact, when I'm at a gig, and there is a vast crowd of adoring fans, it totally annoys me, I'd rather be among very few people, so aiming for a crowd also kills my enjoyment of live music.
Just because you disagree with their motives (however right or wrong you may be about them) doesn't mean they are "killing music" - such an idiotic phrase which is why it's in inverted commas For most covers bands i know the motivation is pretty much just being able to get out there and play, they make a bit of beer money which they will most likely spend on beer and cab fare. Is a band that just wants to play a gig totally dead to you? If there was a band playing covers of music you really liked and doing a really good job of it would you stop to listen?
  4.
playing covers doesn't make you a lesser bass player at all. you are all probably much better than me I just think covers bands may have their place at weddings or the like but it's not why i started playing bass........I certainly believe that covers bands take work away from originals bands and believe that that is bad for music ergo covers bands are bad for music. I disapprove.
So if there were no covers bands then every pub would be full of adoring crowds dancing away to originals bands? Really? If originals bands aren't pulling a crowd then they should improve and promote themselves. It takes more work for an originals band to build a crowd as before you get them to come to a gig nobody gives a sh1t about you. There is no built in audience, and that audience is usually a totally different one from the covers scene What i don't understand is the whining - "you're killing music" blah blah blah. It's been done here before and every time has been shown to be a huge logical fallacy Believe it or not some people will go to a pub on a weekend whether there's a band on or not, if they are hearing music they like played by a good band then they're likely to come back, spend more money etc. Btw the covers scene and originals scene where i live is pretty dire, many venues make more money when they have no band on at all. Do you hear me whining that "DJs have killed music"? No. Accept it, move on, play to your audience
  5.
But also I think it's much harder for new originals bands now because too many bands play covers and too many venues think they want covers........covers bands are killing music!! Sorry
Erm, nope.....
  6.
You really believe that's the only alternative? I know some great covers bands who play pretty unusual stuff to rapturous audiences. In fact, what they're doing is widening the audiences' musical horizons.
+1 I played some excellent songs (Police, Stevie Wonder, Queen...) whilst in the covers band, we flat out refused to play cheese rock. In fact with our last guitarist we went for the funkier stuff which suited me fine I remember depping for a mate and having to play Summer of 69. Euugghh.... Still makes me shudder
  7. I liked the money, free beer/food, meeting loads of new people and contacts, being able to get a better understanding of PA, having a van to use, being put up in sw***y hotels for weddings and getting paid for it, going to other people's parties and getting paid for it, loads of reasons! All my gear has paid for itself, plus i am a much faster learner and have a more developed ear Probably the best thing is having a great night out and coming home with a big wad of cash in your pocket
  8. Cheers for that Beedster! Next time you're up north feel free to come and clean the bits of sick from in between the keys on my laptop
  9.
I can see that case from where I'm sitting right now It still does a very nice job, and from most angles you can't even tell.
Aye, still works fine too! I seriously expected to be greeted with a very poorly Warwick when i opened it up but the case took all the punishment and still remained usable. I think our singer was just as worried as me as he knew my Warwick was in there and it was his fault
  10. The one time i let our singer load my bass in the van he left it propped up against the side door and forgot about it. When the van (long wheel based LDV high-top, fully loaded with 4 blokes in) set off it slipped under the wheels and made an nice crunching/scraping sound The case was badly damaged but the bass (my old Streamer) was fine, not a single scratch. Would definitely buy a cheap Thomann ABS case again!
  11.
Assume you are allowed to, or are your own boss, what are the essential items you'd keep at work? Here are mine What are yours?
Can i come and work for you? It would be a very bad idea for me to have a bass at work, every time i get one delivered here i spend all day noodling on it and get bugger all done.
  12.
Contemplating buying it, that body looks lovely.
+1 Nice bit of grain there, a job for Ou7shined i reckon!
  13.
Please don't post a vagina.
Always a good bit of advice!
  14.
I don't think the superfly is going to work for me after all since i only have one cab which is 8 ohm. Sorry.
Should be ok if it's a sensitive speaker, Bill Fitzmaurice uses his Superfly (or LG, can't remember!) with a single 8ohm cab and says it's fine
  15. Lovely looking thing but there's not a chance you'll get to own it by clicking that BIN! Also i think you'll lose the postage of £48 if you claim through Paypal?
  16.
There are also some design features on modern basses that I really don't like: Neck-through basses with figured tops where the top wood doesn't cover the neck-through part. WHY?
I quite like that, it reminds me of the old Tobias basses i have a soft spot for. Indeed one of the reasons i liked my Zoot was because it looked like that I don't like really fancy wood tops but i do appreciate a nice simple bit of well-executed craftmanship. I guess exposed neck-through basses and ebony stringers etc are a sign of good workmanship and joinery
  17.
I am on record as saying Ritters look like Owen Wilson's nose ... and I stand by that
It's true! Rickys are horrible basses IMO, I also think Gus basses look a little silly
  18.
I have never played one being a lefty! I don't understand the controls though. How does 2 volume 1 tone work on a single pickup bass? Are the 2 coils independently volume controlled?
Yep, you get hum if they're not un full too. You can mod them to true humbucking mode and have a series/parallel switch instead of the other volume. Either that or stick a 2-band pre in there EDIT: FWIW i quite liked mine, very comfortable neck and certainly a looker
  19. Probably also worth mentioning that if both parties are unsure about the deal and are too far away to meet up then i reckon a local (to the buyer), trusted BCer would be happy to act as bagman - receiving the goods and money and then distributing it once everyone is happy.

Just noticed this thread, very sad news indeed. Shall be missed a great deal on these boards Steve
  21. I use an MXR M-80 for general drive, it pairs with fuzz pedals nicely and is blendable with the clean signal. I replaced my ailing Hartke pedal with it after trying a few different ones, it seemed to do what the Hartke did and more (also built a lot better!) Another nice drive pedal i had was the Owen Bass Gremlin, big hefty pedal but it does sound great and is built like a tank
  22.
No-one's mentioned Roger Waters yet. G.
I always thought roger was a decent player, just not one who actually cared about bass!
  23.
Hi, On the subject of the casings on the Superfly: I have just opened mine up because it was cutting out whilst warming up (usually after 5-15 mins) but would eventually reset after a couple of attempts at switching off and back on. It had never let me down at a gig as I let it warm up while setting up the rest of the gear then reset it before we start. This situation doesn't inspire confidence, so I decided to investigate. On removing the outer casings, I found they serve no purpose but increase the weight of the amp by 2.75kg (6lb)!!! It's only 4kg (9lb) without them and 6.75kg (15lb) with!! Worse than that, they create a dead air space of about 5mm above and below the amp. As the amp has no fan, this works like double glazing and INSULATES the amp keeping the heat IN. Then there are those alloy castings on either side. Aluminium isn't the best conductor of heat and they're not finned so, again, they just cause the amp to retain more heat. Ok, you woldn't think things could get much worse, would you? WRONG, this amp is controlled by a digital CPU/motherboard (basically, a small computer). Where do you think they placed this delicate unit in this designed-to-overheat amp? Yes, you guessed it, THEY BOLTED IT RIGHT ON TO THE POWER AMP HEATSINK!!!! Words fail me!! I just can't think of any way of describing how STUPID this design is without getting chucked off this lovely forum, which I've just joined!
Aye, if you look at Mark King's prototype Superfly (it was designed for him as he wanted a tiny head to take on planes) it doesn't have the casing either. A last minute decision by some berk in marketing? Also you can get little rubber feet from Wilkinsons which screw into 4 existing screw holes on the bottom. Get those sharp corners ground down and painted over and you have a tidy little amp which works I run mine this way and it's been fine, don't bother racking it as that defeats the point of having a small amp! I wonder if anyone has tried hooking up a USB fan to the square port on the back (assuming it provides power)? Hmmm, might have a go at that tonight....
  24. I'd say that before you completely discount a Schroeder at least give one a go. The 1212 cabs are plenty loud enough to be used on their own so if you find you like them then they may be the best solution for you. There's loads of people who say they lack low end and are too mid-heavy, but then there's also tons of people who have been quite happily using them for years and love the sound they produce, myself included (i have the 1212r, no idea if it gives more bass than the neo ones). I wouldn't call them bass-shy, there's a surprising amount of low-end in there for such a small cab and i haven't found it lacking at all. On the gigs where we have had a good, clear on-stage sound it can do a very modern, clinical sound with a very focused tight low end. If you need to compete with a loud drummer and really ramp up the mids it is totally at home there too. I think they're a great match for a Markbass head too btw
