1.
I have to say, I'm with Rmshaw on this, expensive gear should be able to stand abuse. I was running my GK 700RB-II through one 210RBH and it was struggling, if it had only ever been me using it, I would've dealt with it but to make sure for a) when we didn't have a PA and when other people used it, I got another 210RBH. That being said, with the 2nd 2x10, it's so loud that your head would probably explode before the amp did.
That's not really abuse though, that's just not being loud enough. You can blow an amp no matter how many speakers you have or what the power handling is. By abuse i mean people who have no clue how to use gear and ignore any guidance they might have been given. Like i said before, the clown who used a rig of mine turned the input gain up so it was permenantly clipping and the speakers were distorting when all he needed to do was move the cab and/or eq differently. Probably heard his guitarist talking about driving the input stage for a better rock tone and thought he'd follow suit. Also unplugging a bass and throwing the lead on the floor was probably fine with his little 15w bedroom combo, not so great with a 500w stack. It's weird the sense of entitlement some people get when they're using a bigger amp than their own, like it should be able to handle silly levels and put up with all kinds of nonsense. I'm pretty sure some of the people who used my stack cranked it just for the sake of it!
2.
Good point. But the issue here is some other bass players generally dont know what theyre doing and can, not always, misuse gear. ie running the gain way too high, putting drinks on top of the vents on te amp etc. My gear can take being played hard, but ive set it up cos i know what im doing. But I dont trust an inexperience, arrogant gimp from an indie band to have the same approach. Again, you raise a very good point, but its the potential damage from some bass players out there who think every one else will provide gear for them. Dan
That's pretty much it for me. Lots of my gear is currently out on loan to various players. My amp, cab, leads and Gramma pad are being gigged by a mate who i know will look after it. He's loving using it and it's giving him more of an idea about what he wants when he upgrades his Crashdown in the next few weeks. Certainly much more than blasting through a rig in a shop for 10 minutes Similarly one of my Warwicks is currently with a forumite (until i can be @rsed to pick it up!), i know it's in safe hands and i'm not using it at the moment. On the other hand i let a kid use my old rig a couple of years ago, he didn't have a clue what the clipping light was for and thought nothing of yanking the jack lead out of his bass and throwing it on the floor, causing a horrible pop sound and then the following loud hum. That's why i don't lend gear to people i don't know. The OP learnt the hard way unfortunately, he's now £900 out of pocket just because he felt generous towards a fellow musician
3.
can i just add that with these thousands of pounds worth of gear, does it not withstand abuse? thousands of pounds mis spent to me! with all the wattage available you'd be deaf before the amp blew!
You wouldn't test drive a Ferrari and crash it into a brick wall, abuse is abuse. Spending more money on gear can make it sound better, be lighter, better built, more features etc. What it can't do is protect against some numpty who thinks turning the volume, gain and bass up to the maximum will make him look more rock than anyone else
4. Don't do it if you don't want to. It's your choice, not an obligation. As you've had almost a grand's worth of kit broken before it's pretty obvious why you're uncomfrotable and justifiably so. Maybe drop the other bands an email explaining the situation and why you don't lend gear out, if they get shirty then they're d1cks
5. Not really looking for any trades on this unfortunately, i've been offered a double bass locally so it will be a direct replacement for this Ta Steve
6.
PS. you pay 350 and leave the pups with me. pickup a set of BArts 2nd hand for 80 quid and there you go. A cracker for 430 pounds....
Does that mean you'll sell the Wizards? If so, i'm interested!
7. A bit less popular i think, probably due to a recent ongoing quality control disaster. Two lads local to me bought Schroeder setups last year and both had problems with them. I think there was a few on here with faulty speakers and badly built cabs too. I think it's meant to be sorted out now though. Mine's from an early run so i don't care!
8. Something you don't already have - a fretless, acoustic bass, one of the cheaper hollow bodies? Maybe a cheap 6er?
9.
Markbass + Schroeder =
This is true! A lot of people have bad things to say about Schroeders but i love mine. My rig is currently on loan to a long-time Ashdown sufferer who's finding it a revelation, it's just a rig that works! The fact that it's lightweight, tiny and pretty cheap (my 1212r and LMII cost under £750 used) makes it a no-brainer
10.
I would hardly describe Mesa and Ampeg as "cheap gear" mind!
+1 You've actually upgraded the amp and cab! Very meaty looking rig though, bet it sounds huge!
11. I've always found my LMII to be the exact opposite of that funnily enough, they're known for their clear reproduction of bass tone! I guess it depends heavily on the cab used with them I think the reason there's quite a bit for sale is that they sell so well, there's tons of MB gear in circulation! They also don't seem to hang around the FS forum for very long either. I've been looking for a LMII for a mate and they all sell pretty quick A neighbour of mine recently bought a 2x10 Markbas combo (the wedge one, can't remember the name) and he's well chuffed with it. Sold all his old Musicman and SWR gear and just uses the combo now, one hand carry and more volume than he needs. He plays in a covers band mainly playing funk and disco and it suits his needs
12. I tried agroupuk's Shuttle 3.0 combo and it was unbelievable for the size and weight, literally felt like holding an empty box! Couldn't believe they managed to sneak a speaker in there! Not hugely loud and no really deep bass but enough for a quiet gig i'd imagine, especially if you have another cab to leave in the van. The Shuttle 6.0 combo would be worth trying out. I'd happily stick it in a rucksack and cycle/walk/use public transport to get to a gig. The Promethean's look great (good prices too), the head slides out like on the Genz which is handy. Also worth considering the Genz/Ibanez mini cabs seeing as you're already spoilt for choice in the lightweight head department. Can be had for £280: http://www.dv247.com/guitars/ibanez-p110c-...-cabinet--64358 The Genz stuff is very expensive in comparison to the Ibanez gear i think
13. Yeah just get in touch with your local Marshall stockist or shoot an email to the distributor, can usually get small stuff like that. I needed a new pot and knob for my old Hartke head and i just rang up for one, cost a few quid and arrived in a couple of days
14.
Haven't seen this one before:
That's brilliant! Just played it to my housemate who's a massive KOL fan and he totally bought it. despite seeing them loads of times!
15. I dunno, it is a piece of bass history for some people (me included). The records it's played on and the Leo Fender signature give it a provenance very few basses have, not to mention 50 year old ones. I reckon the case on it's own could tell a few stories! It's unlikely that this bass will ever be cheaper than £7,000, numerous re-fins or not. The fact they were done whilst in the posession of Dave Pegg can't do it too much harm. Pretty good deal i think, wish i had the money!
16. I'd say the neck was as good as some Squiers i've played, certainly better than the majority of no-name copies. Bearing in ming the Westfield P (one of which i assume donated the neck for this bitsa) goes for £70 new that's quite a bargain. I played the 'Ray copy which was for sale for just over £100 new, was well worth the cash IMO.
17.
My mom seems driven on NEW only for the guitar, but wont mind a used Amp. I'm trying to persuade her but she's stickin.
Your mam play much bass? Seriously, buying used will make the difference between £400 worth of serious gigging equipment and £400 worth of budget gear which may not be siutable for the job. Also remember the value takes a hit as soon as you walk out of the music shop. Some of the basses and amps in the FS section are incredible value for money, i wish i'd had those offered to me when i started out playing. Since joining this site i've not really bought equipment from anywhere else, bar a few items
18. There's a rather nice Iceni bass in the FS section for well under budget that comes with a spare maple/ebony neck. Handmade in the UK and supreme quality, doubt you'd get a better made bass for that price - £600 IIRC
19. Mr. Foxen has a couple of MIM Fenders for £250 each: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=85338 Both with BadassII, the P has an EMG too. If you're anywhere in the NW then this looks like a good deal too: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=87587 Good gigging setup for £400 i think!
20. Hi all, i'm selling this as i've been offered a double bass and can't really justify the extra expense to the missus (despite buying a new TV, fridge-freezer and tumble dryer last week), really nice bass and less than a year old. Pretty much mint, comes with all the accessories and i also might have an old drum stand to fit it. Linky here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry850467 Located near Blackpool Ta! Steve EDIT: I've been asked about posting this, i am willing to post as i have the original box which is sturdy and the gigbag is well padded so it should be ok. Obviously it will be well packed but i strongly reccommend insurance on an item like this, with it being so long Standard UK shipping will be about £14 and Europe will be about £50 (depending on country), that includes £50 insurance which can be upgraded
21. Got my eye on a double bass a friend has offered me so i'm putting this up for sale. It's the black one, less than a year old and looks great. It's pretty much mint - there's a small bit of unpainted wood near the control plate on the back which was there from new. Comes with all the accessories including the braces and the nice sturdy gigbag. Has a handy line in and headphone out for silent practice to an mp3 player. Not much else to say about these, here's a link to the correct colour: http://www.normans.co.uk/p-1282-stagg-edb-...WELAID=98312501 These seem to be going for £250 as they're now £350 new so i'd like to get that for it. EDIT: I've been asked about posting this, i am willing to post as i have the original box which is sturdy and the gigbag is well padded so it should be ok. 22.
I drool over Godin acoustics. This one is over your budget but there may be others : http://www.dv247.com/guitars/godin-a4-sa-f...-natural--49726 I made myself a shallow body acoustic fretless inspired by Godin and it's my most used bass. Also are you so sure about wanting to play fretless that you'd get you nice familiar jazz de-fretted? I'd think about getting a cheap fretless to see how I got on.
There's an A5 fretless on the forum now at £700 http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=89528&hl=godin
23. I'd get another fretles myself, with that sort of budget you can get an absolute belter. I really wish someone would buy this, it looks fantastic: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=85336&hl=tokai Slightly annoyed that i can't afford it!
24. Probably the last thing you need to hear but maybe you should have a look at a Sandberg? http://www.sandberg-guitars.de/basscat-overview
25.
The cost does tend to add up once you add in all the hardware, though it depends on what quality of parts you get. Obviously, you pay a premium for Schaller/Hipshot/etc over no-name parts. I've never used them myself, but Warmoth parts are supposed to be excellent quality.
This is one thing i would be aware of if you go the Warmoth route. The cheap Squier-mod project could turn into a very expensive but absolutely amazing project! I don't think i've ever gone on the Warmoth site and not been tempted to put together something absolutely top spec, when you look at some of the basses people have put together it's very tempting to go all out and get your dream bass at any cost. The quality is absolutely top notch on all Warmoth stuff, i couldn't find a single fault with the one i had
