1.
How are you liking the Superfly? I'm thinking of buying one as a backup to my RH450. My current backup is an Ashdown MAG250 which I'm happy with, but because of its size I very rarely take it with me, which defeats the "backup" concept.
I like it yeah, i'm always hesitant to recommend them to people though because of the issues they have. If you manage to get a good one (it's a bit of a lottery) then they can be very useful. They have very specifc uses tbh due to the way the power section works. As it's 2 seperate outputs giving 250w @ 4ohm or 180w (i think) @ 8ohm each you really need to use them with 2 cabs, pref 4ohm ones, if you want gig volume. They can go pretty loud with 2 decent cabs but with one you might struggle. I mainly use mine with a little home build cab or my EA CXL110 (with a Deltalite), with the EA it's loud enough for practice and makes for a tiny, featherweight rig On the positive side they have a great front end, the digital eq idea is fantastic and really useful. There's loads of low end on tap and used with a bit of compression (i really like the compression on this head btw, it's grown on me a lot) it's really clear and tight. You can get some truly excellent sounds out of this head, such a shame Ashdown dropped the idea instead of sorting the quality control out. It's also very handy as you can use pretty much any combination of cabs with it as it's 2 x 4ohm inputs. So if you turn up to a gig or practice and there's a cab provided chances are you can hook it up in addition to the cab(s) you've brought Tbh there are other options but none at the price of a used Superfly as they go for around £100 (they were £200 new unless bought early on). You need to be aware of their limitations and potential problems but if you can make use of one they're great sounding little amps
2.
Sorry! If it helps; if you find an Amber one I'll let you have my Green one... and I'll get it defretted.
I'll get on it right away, just set an eBay search for "Bolin bass - 4 string - Amber - BIN under £40". Not holding my breath....
3. You really are going to have to stop posting pics of that green Bolin WH, every time i see it i want one but can't afford it. I love the headstocks on those, a fretless version would be my dream bass Very cruel!
4. All the same, his advice was technically incorrect. The fact that the amp blew that day was most likely pure coincidence, unless it's one of the few SS amps with an output transformer
5. Have a free bump, Chris is a great guy to deal with!
6. A transistor amp is a solid state amp. Any amp which doesn't have an output transformer (ie pretty much all SS amps) is fine without a load. If your tech said that i'd be worried about trusting him with any other amp repair
7. Very gracious of you there Beedster, good lad! Warmoth necks aint cheap, they still charge $80 extra for a lined fretless neck, but they are fantastic quality. Used prices are pretty bad though as i found out when trying to flog mine - it took about a year!
8.
I wouldn't risk by putting an amphead or whatever and a bass in a gigbag that doesn't have enough padding between two, and those cheap bags don't seem to be protective.. You wouldn't want a broken neck or pots, would You, Lemmy?
Well the amp is a Superfly (used value around £100) and the bass will be either an Aria Jazz i bought for £45 or my homebuild Jazz (parts around (£140) so you can understand why i don't wanna drop any more on a gigbag! Tbh it's just so i can leave everything in one bag for weekly practice, i often have very little time as i'm on dad duty most evenings so i'm always in a rush when getting my gear together The OGC one listed above looks alright quality, i suppose i could always get a sheet of foam sewn under pvc to the inner section to protect the bass, i can get that done at work for free if i ask the girls nicely!
9. Absolute bargain for a Warmoth neck, good score Beedster!
10.
it does actually mean one of the amps is running without anywhere to send its load...doesn't it? Or does the second amp compensate somehow?
Doesn't really matter with solid state gear AFAIK (someone more qualified will no doubt clarify that). You can run it with no cabs attached if you so wish, won't be very loud though!
11. Yep, as David said you can run any cab off either output as long as it doesn't go lower than 4ohms. Keep in mind that if you want any sort of volume with one cab then it needs to be very sensitive, the amps don't have much beef - my Hartke A70 is louder than my Superfly through most single driver 8ohm cabs and that's a 70w combo It's loud enough with my Deltalite loaded EA cxl 110 though and sounds very nice to boot.
12. Ah cool, i played through it last night at moderate volume with the bass up on the eq (just to see how low it could go) and it didn't crap out, i have the day off work tomorrow so will get the opportunity to play for another hour or so With a 4 month old baby in the house i don't get to make as much noise as i used to! Cheers!
13. What a bargain! Now seems to be a good time to buy Hartke gear!
14. No need to apologise marc, totally not your fault as the box was very well packed. I guess it's always one of those things which can happen and I really should have insured it for more but as it stands i'll get the £50 insurance and the driver wasn't much more. Kind of a blessing in disguise really as it's made the cab so light, about a third of the original weight! I still can't believe just how much the original driver weighed when I removed it, the cabinet itself hardly weighs anything!
15. Just a quick update, i got the Deltalite installed in this today and gave it a quick test. Sounds very deep and can go loud for the size of the cab, very clear sound which i'm really chuffed with. Cab is very light too! What would be the best way to bed the driver in? I would like to use this at practice on Thursday and don't want to push it until i'm sure it's ok to do so Cheers for all the help guys, also big props to John at EA (very helpful guy, even when it was clear i wasn't buying the recone kit off them) and great service from Blue Aran who upgraded the courier to next day for no extra charge (still unsure why but not complaining!)
16. ZVex Mastotron and black Russian Muff are the 2 fuzz pedals i really like, the black Big Muffs are variable though I also enjoyed the Blowtorch but found it much less aggressive in a band mix than on it's own, despite the eq and blend options and being 18v
17. That looks nice but a bit more than what i want to spend (i'm incredibly tight btw), i was thinking sort of £40 max, preferably around £30 It's just for practice use, so i can be lazy and leave everything in the bag so i'm good to go. Having a 4 month old baby means i have a lot less time to sort my gear than i used to, couple that with the male baby-brain means i'm bound to forget to pack something sooner or later!
18. Can't find a link for one of those, are they still available? I found these: http://www.wembleyguitarcentre.com/Catalog...Bag-TSTBGEN20UB http://www.omegamusic.co.uk/shop/music-sho...=2979&ref=1 http://www.pianocoversonline.co.uk/gold-series-p-1566.html Not sure if the front pockets are deep or long enough though, the Superfly has feet attached (damn top mounted cab handles!) and it's quite long
19.
Yup. Mains borne interference. That is why TV and Film studios have completely separate power supplies from the National Grid for technical, domestic and lighting. They also have separate earths. You don't want to see vacuum cleaner moter intereference on-air. This is not to say that there can't still be problems. When London Weekend Television's new studio centre (now the London Studios) was installed they had terrible hum problems. This was because of an earth potential difference between them on the South Bank and the Post Office Tower. The hum was temporarily reduced by earthing the whole of the technical equipment through steel plates dropped into the River Thames until some new equipment could be purchased. In your gig siuation where everyone is running from the same supply you are really on a hide into nowhere. What you need is a separate clean supply but as that is highly unlikely the best hope is use some filtering to remove all the cr@p before it gets to your amp or eliminate the DJ.
I bought one of these a while ago: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tacima-CS929-6-Way-M...=item2c58b5a7cc Have no idea if it works as described (i bought it for a specific problem which i later found was unrelated to my mains supply) but it was recommended on here
20. Hi all I've started practicing with a full band again after a short layoff and have recently downsized my practice rig so it's as small and light as i can afford I now need a gigbag with big pockets, needs to fit an Ashdown Superfly with the case removed (same as Little Giant), a pack of strings and instrument/kettle leads. Not too bothered about heavy duty padding as it just goes in the car and up a flight of stairs, basically i'm lazy and want to take just a gigbag and a 5kg mini cab! So is there anything available at lower price points (ie £30+)? Cheers! Steve
21.
Shameless plug but I have a variety of Leatherman left if anyone wants one!
Surely the plural is Leathermen? +1 on the Gramma Pad if you haven't got one, also have a look at the Korg Pitchjack tuner - a really handy jack tuner that plugs into the guitar jack
22. Yeah it's the standard pencil shaped tip. Is there a standard type of tip or do i have to buy a specific one for my soldering iron? As it's a cheapy i assumed the cheapy tips would fit, i could do with a finer one as i have a laptop repair to do next week
23. I was wondering what tips you guys reccommend for soldering basic guitar stuff? I've been using a cheap 40w solder station with the stock tip, this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Solder-Station-40W-F...=item3362fbad36 (I bought that one because we used similar ones at school many moons ago)
24. Excellent work, that looks stunning!
25. Ah great, i really like strong mids, as i'll most likely be using it with the Superfly i can eq out anything i don't like. Goods news that the driver is a good choice for the cab, i'll be putting an order in at Blue Aran then! Interparcel won't pay out until i show a receipt for replacement goods so i'll have to buy it first
