Never knew about the OBBM but I have made up plenty of identical cables with Neutrics Silents and Vandamme cable and can only do it the same cost (and its my soldering as opposed to by someone who knows what they are doing!). Cables using these components are very reliable, sound perfect and robust. Use OBBM, they are doing it for what would be cost to you an me.
Aye obbm stuff is only marginally more expensive than making your own unless you buy in bulk or get a cheap deal I managed to pick up a bag of Neutrik connectors a while ago for a few quid so i make my own now. Once they're gone (why is it that as soon as folk find out you have them they suddenly need cables making up?) i'll get some more obbm stuff It's worth keeping an eye out in the FS section as occaisionally there's cable/connectors going cheap there
Where does a warwick have extra to rest your thumb? Edge of the pickup for me on the Rays the Jazz and the P bass plus all of those have a pickguard that can also be used for an anchor in various places where to my knowledge the warwicks do not? Finding something that appeals to you is key but if you like chilis and RATM there is a direction worth exploring first at least and trying against others in a shop. Some smaller people dont like Rays and find them a bit big which is odd because its the same as a P and smaller than a Jazz? On the other hand some larger people dont like warwicks and smaller bodied stuff like Ibanez because they look small on them like Alice in wonderland or something. I do like some of the G&L stuff so +1 to trying that avenue.
On the neck pup! For me that's the most comfortable and versatile place - it's where my thumb mainly stays, as the OP has a Jazz he'll probably have the same issues if he plays fingerstyle. I don't find MM basses a struggle, just that they're not as comfortable as other basses i own. The arwick fits much more snugly around my beer gut!
Simple. End off
Wouldn't say it's that simple! I love Chilis and RATM but really don't get on with Rays, i found them cumbersome and there's nowhere sensible to mount my thumb! I eventually found a bass that did the Flea and TimC sounds in a Warwick Corvette. To this day i've never played a bass that is as good for that agressive funk-rock sound. The OP may get the sound he's looking for from many different basses, Rays being one of them. They should definitely be on the shortlist, as should Warwicks, G&L, Ibanez, Fender etc. Basically go into a few shops and try loads of basses out, find out what suits you. I played a Cort the other day that sounded great and would definitely do the sounds you're after
I think you might have your red\black and white wires the wrong way round. Take a look at this: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wirin...c=std_jazz_bass This would make the white wires hot and the red and black ones not (as they're soldered to the pot casing). HTH
That's how they are soldered, as in the diagram in my first post. In fact i used that SD link when i originally wired them up! I tried reversing them just in case and still nothing I'll do a full rewire with new wire and hook each pot up to a jack individually first to test. As i said the bridge vol and tone pots are functioning normally and i've swapped the whole neck vol pot and wires for another set but still nowt! The pup definitely works too! The neck pup is a Kent Armstrong btw, not sure about the bridge unit
-
The bridge vol and tone are behaving now, i've rewired it and they function as normal. However the neck vol is still dead. I wired in a different pot and got the same result so i'm giving up tonight. I'll have a beer and figure it out in the morning! Cheers for the help Rich!
A bass has 4 strings. What you've got there is a sitar
Or, with a quick tweak of the truss rod, a harp!
-
Both pups fine thankfully. Stumped!
-
Good idea, i'll do that after i've settled my crying little girl as soldering irons and 2 month old babies definitely don't mix!
-
Not EMGs, they came with a neck and body i bought, this one (except it now has a killer 70s Japanese neck on it!): http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;hl=neck+body The seller said they might be KA but i didn't make any assumptions. I'm dying to get this done properly as the bass itself is almost finished and sounds brilliant!

Been trying to wire up my jazz bitsa i've just built but being a total newbie at this stuff i have made an error somewhere. I followed a diagram off t'internet but it's not working correctly. The neck pickup barely does anything and the tone acts as some sort of volume. I bought the pre-wired control plate but i seem to have muched it up! Anybody know what i've done wrong? The neck pickup has red/white wires and the bridge has black/white. I assumed the red and black were the hot ones P1ss poor drawing below:

Agreed. "Funky" and "punchy" aren't the first words that come to mind when i think of LP/SG basses! The word that does is "mud"! The only one i've liked was an Ltd SG/Viper shape with massive EMG humbuckers in. Sounded huge but was a bit too metal-looking for me Here y'are, ESP/Ltd Les Paul and SG shapes: http://www.espguitars.com/basses_ec.html http://www.espguitars.com/basses_viper.html Pretty sure the one i played had massive Musicman style pickups with exposed pole-pieces so may have been an older model
I ended up having to use gaffa tape to connect the pups and to borrow some strap buttons off my guitarist. I had ot plug the holes with splinters from a drum stick. I also had to borrow a strap and even at its most extended the bass was way to high.
That's ace! Any pics?
Depends on the music of course, but I really doubt most of a wedding audience will even notice a lack of bass!
They do on the intro to A Town Called Malice, trust me!
-
Interestingly all the worn in old Fenders that i've seen (up close, not pics) have looked nothing like the relics produced by companies. To me it looks a bit silly, but then i also think lots of basses without relic finishes look silly!
-
Well the start bid is only 6 grand so it's not that expensive compared to some basses. Wonder how much he charges for a scratchplate....

I remember something about Paypal not covering you if you don't send it to the specified address on checkout so be careful.
Do you take 2 cars as well?
Our drummer was a mechanic, so no. If the van breaks down and there's nothing you can do about it then that's a reasonable excuse. It's not a massive effort to take a spare bass to a gig and it costs nothing, so that isn't an excuse for not being able to play i'm afraid. Would you still pay a tradesman who broke their tools and couldn't do the job? The way i see it is that you have to expect the unexpected and prepare for all eventualities. If you don't and something goes wrong (be it your fault or someone else's) then as a paid musician you only have yourself to blame.
-
.... the last thing I'd be caring about was a spare bass to finish the set. It's only a gig! The rest of the band'll be able to carry on, after all. Definitely not worth taking a spare unless you're also in that happy position of having roadies
If somebody is paying me £150+ to play at their wedding then it's not just a gig though. I am being paid to provide a service as an entertainer, if i haven't got the required tools for whatever reason then i'm not doing my job and i'd feel guilty about taking the money - rightly so. Being able to switch basses in a few seconds is much better than standing there like a plonker with a duff bass while the rest of the band carry on playing!
-
In case of amp failure i DI straight from my bass using an MXR M80 or an Aphex Bass Xciter, usually the MXR. As it's first in my signal chain anything after it can go kaputt and i'll still have bass going to FOH with no interruptions
It's sold for £102 this time.... wonder what he'll do now
That was the original transaction, i don't think he's relisted it yet. Tbh he's getting a pretty good price for it, almost half the RRP for a very common cab. If i sold it for that i'd be happy. Nobody is gonna pay within £50 or so of the retail price for a 2nd hand cab with no guarantee, especially as it's pick-up only. I guess he paid a fair bit more for it and has an inflated view of what it's worth Maybe the OP should message him with a link to the Thomann site and explain this, maybe he'll realise he's been a bit of a twonk and not do it again?
-
Have a look at Interparcel's site. They use a number of services and are substantially cheaper than going direct, they use FedEx too IIRC I got some surprisingly cheap quotes to Europe a while ago so they may be cheap for USA too
-
I've broken strings, had a push/pull volume pot fail (no sound), had a jack socket work loose mid-gig, had a crackly volume pot that sounded like a blown speaker..... Having a spare bass is a life saver Always take a backup if you're getting paid. Just because you've never had a problem before doesn't mean you never will. IMO it's unprofessional to only take one bass to a paid gig Find a cheapy copy on eBay for £50 so you don't have to worry about it and stick it in a £10 gigbag. I got sick of taking 2 expensive basses to gigs as it also means two hard cases and stands.

Changing an active bass to a passive bass
lemmywinks replied to Davy's topic in Repairs and Technical
Aye, if it's passive pickups attached to an active pre then just swap out the wiring. If it's active pickups with an active pre (not as common) then you'll most likely need to swap out the pickups One other problem you might have is extra holes in the scratchplate/body where the active controls were. You'll only need 3 holes for a passive J bass What i did was to use the empty hole for a series/parallel switch, handy and reversible if you want to sell the bass on -
I think he absolutely should be Neg'd. That's what the feedback system is there for... it's only useful if it's accurate. IMO, neg him and walk away.
+1 I received a nasty message last time i left negative feedback but it was an honest representation of my experience with the seller
