1.
That's the man. ...the solderless connectors he uses mean that a complete idiot can fit them.
They'd be no good to me then. I can't seem to get past being any idiot; I guess I'll have to get up early and practice a bit more...
2. I've recently had to explain what Turning Japanese by The Vapours (I think) is really about. Entirely worth it just to see the shocked look on their face :-)
3. +1 to U2, although some of their early stuff was good; then they seemed to start believing their own hype... Also never understood the boy band thing, this started a long time ago when the Bay City Rollers were the 'biggest band in the world' before it was someone else's turn; although I don't think boy bands receive the attention they do on their musical merits... Now, my contribution would be The Who. Although I love JE's basslines and what he could do with a bass, I have never understood how or why this band were so popular. They had a couple of big hits that rightly still get played today, but the rest of their stuff was very different to these and mediocre at best. There were a lot of bands that no-one remembers doing very similar stuff at the time. Maybe I'm just a bit too young to appreciate the state the country was in at the time which was the backdrop for this music being written.
4.
'100 basses some guy wants to try' Filed alongside his '5 reasons NOT to play a five string (which is actually a video mostly focusing on why the bassist uses a five string)' Next week: you will never to be able to guess what these 1990s alt-rock bassists look like now! (number 6 will SHOCK you...)
This will be followed by 'One weird trick to play like a pro' which you click on eager to learn and find the weird trick is...
... to practice for three hours a day for the next ten years!
5.
Sorry to hear you're leaving Cardiff Ashweb
I'll be around for a while yet - just had my contract extended, so must be doing something right I'm in Cardiff during the week as I'm currently working here, but I go back to the Midlands for the weekend so my Wife and family don't forget what I look like. I've been threatening to turn up at an open night or similar just to prove how bad things can get for some time, you never know - I might see you out there...
6.
Insert inappropriate euphonium joke here.
Did you miss a bit, Dad? You know, I think I'm going to book both those bands the next time I have a party; should be quite a night!
7.
Heya explosive light orchestra is the name. we are at the globe on Saturday if you like!
If I was around at the weekend, I'd come along. Just checked out some clips on YouTube and it looks like a good night - there's a popular thread on here titled How was your gig last night if you feel like telling all afterwards
8. Hi Aiden, from a part time Cardiffian; I'm working here ATM and clear off back to the Midlands at the weekend. I'm more the ageing rocker trying to grow old disgracefully and definitely not able to hold my own with the above company just yet - I'm firmly in the improver / intermediate category and try to spend evenings practising or having a lesson with Jon Caulfield, who you may or may not know - he gets around a bit! Very interesting to hear about your diverse range of projects - what's the ELO tribute band called, BTW?
9.
I remember an electron telling me he's now a proton. I asked "Are you sure about that?" and it replied "I'm positive"
...and I was right there when a photon tried to check in to a hotel; the Receptionist asked if there was any luggage, to which it replied 'No, I'm travelling light'
10.
Thin Lizzie covered 'Whiskey in the Jar' in the early 1970s and it has rarely been bettered.
I'd largely agree with that - although Metallica's cover of the same song is, for me, the go-to version Other notable covers would be The Slits version of Heard it Through The Grapevine... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCr8V5wAroA ...and this surprisingly good version of an AC/DC classic. 11. TBH - After reading the previous posts on this thread and recalling some of my previous posts; I'm not sure if I'm part of the problem or part of the solution
12. There was a young man from Nantucket.... ...Oops! Wrong web site
13. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snyjRd93HBs Doesn't matter who plays it - still one of the best protest songs ever written IMO

15. Working freelance, I've met many people with 'unusual' names, the ones that spring to mind immediately are: Daniel Spaniel, Julie C Hicken (that's how she always signed off emails - and Hicken was her married name), David Essex (not THAT one) Ian Anderson (or THAT one either) Luke Walker (to be fair, when he was born that was a perfectly good name until a few years later and George Lucas came along) John Thomas. Circumstances have not been kind to a few people, but you do wonder what the thought process of some parents are when choosing names for their offspring; perhaps they're all Johnny Cash fans?
16.
There certainly were bands recording what I would call rock & roll in the 70s. Blue
Yeah, but on this side of the pond, everything went glam rock in the 70's with the likes of Slade, Sweet and T-Rex who had a much more powerful sound. The only bands playing 'real' rock n roll were the mighty Showaddywaddy... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9NKs3h1CS8
17. Go for it, there's lots of positives and few negatives; there's also the mantra that it's always better to regret something you've actually done...
18. +1 to all above. I treated myself to a Sub Ray 4 recently and now my poor old Ibanez GSR doesn't get a look in any more. Very simple controls but it is an absolute beast on the bottom end, even through my 30W Ashdown amp. I also like the balance of the thing, seems to sit nicely while playing; the neck is thicker than some but this is something I got used to fairly quickly (by that I mean I get the same amount of fret buzz and bum notes that I had on the Ibanez, now it's back to being operator error )
19. Only just found this thread - finger on the pulse, me... Absolutely brilliant, I am made up for you. Have the photo printed out as large as possible and displayed prominently at your next gig, mention your celebrity fan and also the same T Shirts are available for a modest contribution and they'll be flying out the door. Any plans to send any more out? World domination awaits...
20. I've been having lessons with Jon for a few months now after a recommendation on here, and I fully agree with the comments above. Jon certainly knows his stuff and his teaching methods are very low key but very effective - how else would a dyed in the wool rocker like me be playing this new fangled funk stuff, and enjoy it? In a relatively short time, Jon has managed to iron out a few bad habits I'd picked up, improve my left and right hand technique and get me to pick up new songs a whole lot quicker by the use of carefully selected really cool songs to learn that also double up as exercises - and as I have the attention span of a goldfish and am easily distracted by the next shiny thing, this is no mean achievement. If you're in the Cardiff area and are looking for good quality, well structured lessons built around your own playing aspirations then I'd say that no matter what level you play at, from just starting out and wondering which way up to hold the thing through to a seasoned pro, then Jon will be able to help you out.
21. Good luck with your new business, what line are you going into, BTW? +1 to above on choice of bass affecting your playing. This was admirably demonstrated by my instructor who borrowed my Ibanez GSR, and it sang like an angel; when he handed it back to me, it was back to fret buzz and bum notes - definitely a case of operator error unless that bass just don't like me....
22. Congratulations to you both. Remember it's a life sentence, but one well worth serving :-)
23. I must admit to not being a big fan of FF. I've liked a few songs like The Pretender and Everlong but not really payed them too much attention - but having watched the set last night, they really went up in my estimation; exactly what you want from a live rock band - others should take notice.
I can't help but think the Foo's are what The Darkness would have been like if they took themselves very, very seriously.
Interesting point, I wonder if they are the band Nirvana would have morphed into had they the chance to carry on...
24. Been given two exercise / practice pieces by my instructor and have got a bit hooked on playing them as they're two of my favourite tracks. The first is 'Sunshine of your Love' by Cream and the second is 'Cars' by Gary Newman; having a bit of trouble getting the chorus up to speed, but I'll get there...
25. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the inherent latency in Skype will not allow simultaneous playing from a remote source. As a simple experiment, set a metronome going at your end and ask your friend to play along - even if it's just playing a note to each beep; he'll be fully in time his end, but at your end he'll be way out. There may be other systems that can be used but I have no experience with them, but Skype is not suitable I'm afraid.
