Hi from yet another late starter / mid life crisis bass player (well it's a lot cheaper than a Harley Davidson - so far, anyway). I'm also from up your way so let us all know when you start gigging and where.

Sounds like a good day was had by all. Gutted to have pulled out but unavoidable, I'm afraid. Keep me in the loop for the next one and well done to Si for taking the time and trouble to organise it, I know how much effort these things take to do properly. Edited for spelling.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to miss this one. Pity as I was really looking forward to it; family have decided to visit and will be arriving on Saturday which means i won't be able to go off on my own. Catch y'all at the next one...

Also as mentioned elsewhere, check out the outer packaging as it looks like this has had an argument with a fork lift or been dropped from height and the packaging will show any gouging from fork blades etc. Just think, if you were going to smash this cab into pieces, you would need to use several huge blows from a heavy object such as the aforementioned sledgehammer and this is the level of force it has been subjected to; nothing routine about that and definitely their responsibility. Go get 'em!!

Just watched tonight's show on iPlayer. I quite enjoyed it on the whole - last weeks show left me a bit cold really but they have to cater for all tastes so not every show will be of interest. Thought the artist from the Faro Islands was a bit out of place in this show, and really enjoyed Beth Ditto much to my surprise. I shall be watching on Friday with a lot more interest than last week.

AFAIK, if you move into an area where there is an existing 'noise issue' you have no real basis of complaint as the noise was already there; if however a 'noise issue' is introduced to an otherwise peaceful area then any complaint will be investigated and either removed or mitigated to all parties satisfaction. So anyone moving just down from a music venue / pub should expect some form of music being played - either live bands or CD Jukebox - if they're buying the place, their legal search would have turned this up; and if they're renting, the landlord / agent should have informed them of local 'amenities' so there's no reason for not knowing. I've actually been on both sides of this argument. I used to rent a flat in a town centre, a few doors down from a pub that was well known for playing loud music. Yes, outside you could hear the music as if you were in the place, but in the flat it wasn't too bad and easily drowned out by the TV so I wasn't bothered at all; also I knew from experience that the landlord was a responsible chap and at 11pm on the dot every night, the music was turned down or off so I never felt as if I had a valid reason to complain whereas I suspect many others would from the tales told above. At the same place a few years later, they built a new library literally in the back yard. As part of the building services they installed an air conditioning system which initially ran through the night; and when it shut down (as it did regularly) it literally screeched - loud enough to wake me up and I sleep through anything. Myself and several other neighbours complained about this new noise issue and the council deployed noise meters etc and the report agreed it was too loud and too often. The library said they needed to run the air conditioning to keep the books in good condition but a compromise was made so that the system would shut down between 11pm and 7.30am when things were a bit cooler anyway so we got some sleep and they got their books preserved. I think the world is a better place when common sense prevails.

A bit of a guilty pleasure this... Just found the track on YouTube as not familiar with it - not the greatest U2 fan, if I'm honest, but their early stuff was much better than the band they turned in to IMO. Well done for picking up that bass line. Like a lot of songs, a short riff that repeats throughout and a few 'twiddly bits'. As you say, the tab above isn't quite right as far as my ears go. Would still love to see what you came up with - I don't think you'll get flamed on here; I put up a video of me playing along to Pretty Vacant by The Sex Pistols when I'd only be playing for abut 3 months which was a comedy of errors and got nothing but constructive comments. I find the hardest part of songs like this is not the riff itself, but playing it accurately and consistently throughout the whole 3-4 minutes of the song; having just this issue with Fun Lovin' Criminal by FLC.

You should do it, might help out someone else. It is really Surprising how far off some tabs are; just shows how different people listen to a track as ultimately any tab is someone's opinion on how the track should sound. What track was it BTW?

The pupil / tutor relationship can work both ways. I've just heard from my Skype tutor, and I'm in trouble. When I first met her, she was into jazz and funk mainly; she informs me she's just joined a Ska Punk band and blames me entirely for leading her astray and introducing her to The Sex Pistols (music of, not the band members). This makes me feel goooood. :-)

Anyone remember Roxette by Dr. Feelgood? Very simple bass line but fantastically effective.

I'd definitely recommend anyone starting out to seek out the help of a tutor. When I decided to learn bass, I had this fantastic idea of teaching myself from information available on the web and was soon swamped by the massive amount of information available. What was needed was some form of structure which initially I got from buying the Bass for Dummies book but found this a little heavy going and sought out a 1-2-1 lesson with a real person. This is the way to go, for me at least, as having someone there to pick out all the bad habits and poor technique I'd acquired in a relatively short time and show me correct technique was great although I do still slip into bad habits, especially when learning new things. Also, as mentioned above, it's good to have a bit of encouragement from someone when things aren't going well. Started off in Southampton with a fantastic tutor who I still keep up with via Skype, I don't think she's on here but can pass on contact details if anyone in the area is interested; recently relocated to Cardiff with work and have just started with Jon Caulfield who is on here. Had my second lesson with him last night and I can see this working very well. All of which reminds me, I need to go do some practice...

It could be that by being the best in the room, you showed up their shortcomings and they don't want to be shown up. As you say though, an email, text or phone call costs nothing, as does politeness and Courtesy. The latter these days is so rare, it should be considered a superpower.

I've had bouts of physio in the past, the first to get a broken leg moving again after an RTA and the second for a recurring back problem. During this time I have learnt: 1) They do indeed do an incredible job, 2) If they suggest that you 'try' something; you WILL be doing it - resistance is futile. 3) They like to hear you scream. Harry Secombe referred to his physio as his Physio terrorist, possibly the best compliment ever. :-)

Just caught up with this thread - I'm beginning to feel very under geared! If I go for 'full deployment' then I can bring my main bass, an Ibenez GSR200, my first bass, a Tanglewood Rebel that I don't use as much as I should, my Ashdown Perfect Ten amp and a Boss flanger pedal; and maybe a cake.
