Thought about getting a dep drummer for the gig? Garry
-
Yep a Slapper here when needed....just part of the job in my book. And its a good feeling depping in a Function band and they say.. 'is it ok to do the dreaded Car Wash'. 'Only the last dep sounded like he was herding cattle ' And that was actually said to me.... Garry

Personally when i am Depping or freelancing, and there is no pad on the gig i would get the MD/Bandleader to email a set list, and the keys. Better to learn the tunes you dont know rather than have bits of paper on the floor. That can be a disaster, bad lighting, slick bands doing quick segues, [and you are on your knees f##king around looking for parts] Better to be confident and in control before you get on the gig, people will not worry about the odd clam if you are fitting and sitting well in the band. This is in the ideal world of course, Normally what happens is the band is not as together as you were lead to believe, and half way through Mustang Sally or I will survive you start to wish you had Run of and joined a factory when you had the chance.
i get bored after a few minutes because its all just him twiddling around and i find that boring.
If you find him boring, thats cool, its all just opinions. But Jaco did plenty of beautiful and very lyrical lines, almost vocal like. There really was more to him than just 'twiddling around' He was unique at that time, for sure. Garry
So, 15 months after commissioning the bass, and after a lot of excellent crafstmanship from Robbie, today I collected it from Robbie. It is A-MAZING. More photos to follow soon.
Hey Snakey, it looks great! Had mine 4 years now. Not had to have the Truss rod tweeked once. If yours is anything like mine, the necks are rock solid. Enjoy. Garry
I know it's a bit sad but i love the bassline from Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin'". Ace line though
Not sad at all. Louis Johnson right on the money, up front, killer sound. Garry

This is a great buy. http://www.musicroom.com/se/ID_No/030950/details.html Cant beat the real thing - listen to as much as possible. Me and my wife have had about half a dozen trips to Cuba. And seeing and hearing it played in the real environment is a real thrill and education. Ray, i am just over the creek from you - Canvey Not quite Cuba. Garry

I hope you don't point out when people "fail" in real life otherwise you might find it's your nose that "fails".
Well i hope that has not killed this post... I was really enjoying watching the progress. More pics please. Garry
Thanks for that - I will give this a try see how it sounds.
Unless you are wearing boxing gloves, it will sound ok and even right.... Garry

Sad news. I was lucky to play Bass on a 10 week show [and drink myself Stupid] which included 'Chas & Dave'. Top geezers! They even taught me 'ow to sing Rabbit. Dave is an Excellent Bassist with a driving sound. Garry

Whitney Houston's New Bass Player is...........
lowdown replied to Doddy's topic in General Discussion
Of course, this could meant that Ms. Houston is going in a new direction and going all 'fusion' on us rather than Garrison going for a commercial gig.
'I want to Vibe with Somebody' Yep that could work. Garry -
From another direction, big band stuff like the incredible Sinatra At The Sands (with the Count Basie Orchestra) is seriously hard swinging but lacking the more challenging harmony of bebop etc. Alex
I was listening to that Album today, Great. But there is some serious close harmony going down in the Sax section. Great arranging. Garry -
I am doing a walking bass line over a Bb7 chord. At the moment I am playing B, D, E, F#, G, A, B, D .
If you play those walking notes over a Bb7chord, whatever style... There would be a few raised eye's. Soloing, maybe yes. Dropping that series of notes a half step, would work, maybe not ideal.. But would give a good blues outline. Garry

Finding the key of a song you are covering?
lowdown replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
No joke, an amazing keyboard player that I usually play with, to find keys, just starts chromatically up until he finds the key that rings int his ear! and I didn't realise this until he said it! I just thought it was jazz...
Not sure that is amazing.. It sounds like the Peter Sellers approach... 'A shot in the Dark' Garry -
Doh! - It a good job I don't do these for a living
Out of interest are you using Sibelius? I have been using Finale for a while, and am thinking of going over to Sibelius 6. You can rewire straight into Cubase and run the two together, very useful. Garry
My money is on Rainy but I am open to challenge. This one is harder to read but there is a lot of repetition so that helps. My chords are also probably iffy (Mat?) but I do try....
Cheers Bilbo.. But i do think Dm6 on a B bass is Bm7-5... Sure Matt will put us right. Good one Garry
"4 strings vs 5 strings vs 6 strings. What's better?" None of them. They're all good. Bored.
Or in the wrong hands.. They're all bad. Garry
oops, i didnt notice that! ok, thanks, i'm downloading it now. i'm using reaper, so hopefully it'll show up where its supposed to. once its downloaded i'll have a good play around with it. thanks!
Yep, a friend of mine uses it in Reaper and it works fine. Have fun. Garry
thing is, at the moment anyway, i don't want to go down this route, not seriously. its just something to mess around with, i'm not bothered about getting a great sound, i was simply asking because when i search for free VSTi downloads theres loads of them, i figured i might as well ask and see if there are any people recommend before i download one that i might end up disappointed with. hi, sorry, i might be completely misunderstanding your post, but did you mean to post a link there? you said here's a source of some goodies but you didnt say where. thanks! that link leads to the news page, did you mean this? the independace free 2.5? does this work the same way as a .dll plugin, you put it into the right folder for you DAW software? my german ist sehr schlect (although i'm suprised at how much i understand on that page ), so i'm not sure how it works, i'd rather get an explaination i fully understand, rather than odd words and phrases that i understand on the website. thanks!
First of all. When you get to the page - press the union jack! thats usually for English. Its a VSTi, thats what you said you are after. Independence is a sampler that loads up high quality samples [provided] But you can use just as a rompler [and its easy to use] just like loading presets. Not sure what DAW you are using, But it will show up after installation. Yes a .dll file, but that is automatically directed to your VST folder on programme installation. Some small .dll files can be copied to your VST folder manually, But software that comes with an installer, usually sets the path for .dll on the installation. Hope this helps. Garry
