T-Bone Wolk. Wow, I can't believe that just came straight to me. I didn't think I still had that many brain cells left! Steve
Good one Steve. http://www.tbonewolk.com/TBoneHome.html Garry
I know that using a plectrum on a bass is generally a taboo amoungst pro bassists
Is it? The guy that played Bass on all the Hall & Oates stuff. Good tone. Who ever that was. Garry
Is that really necessary? I always thought it was the action of the thumb hitting the string itself that sounded the note...
I agree. Also bearing in mind open strings come into the equation. Garry

Thanks Bilbo. Garry
Wasn't it in The Bass Gallery a year or 2 back? Same description. I always thought it was Steve Pearce's old bass. Either way it was one of the nicest jazzes I've played- it just felt well bedded in.
Quite possible it was the same Bass. But i remember speaking to Steve Pearce and he said it was not his. I think it might have belonged to Steve Price originally. It had Bart pups when i got it, RS sent me some vintage pups over and it sound much better. Expensive phone call that, i ended up ordering another Sadie Jazz... So the green one had to go. Garry
To be really honest I don't think anyone in the audience is going to take much notice of what bass is being played. In fact most of them would only notice the bass if it wasn't there
Thats very true... I depped a lot on this show when it first toured then went into the West End about 10 years ago. Shane Ritchie was the main turn IIRC. Good fun show to play, i think it was all live at that time, just a few clix tracks with extra instruments etc. The guy i depped for used a Warcking thumb, And i used a Sadowsky nyc 5 stg jazz....Green! I sold it to a guy in Grantham. I have often wondered if anyone here on Basschat now owns it? Garry

Eight, For a bit of fun.... Play the root notes tapped with left hand, and arps tapped with right hand. Do it in the privacy of your bedroom, then you can't be accused of noodling. Garry
Buy a cheap keyboard and learn how to play chords and scales. This will teach you about intervals and harmony and the impact upon chords of playing different root notes and building additional notes upon chords.
That is good advice for noobies and advanced. If you can not get hold of some keys, maybe Guitar. Dont get to serious with Guitar though, because you will never learn to sightread, And you will lose all your friends. Garry
The most important skill under these circumstances is to be able to deal with the geography of the chart (sines/codas/repeats etc) so, whatever else goes wrong, you know where you are in the performance.
Thats a very good point. A lot of musicians starting to read tend to think sight reading is just about the notes. Infact the signs, codas and repeats, looking ahead for key/time changes etc are the things that trip up folks new to sight reading. Garry
I missed a couple of odds and sods (the odd coda and a couple of endings were imperfect)
But there aint no Coda in Jazz... Charlie parker dies and goes to hell, and the devil greets him at the gate saying, 'hey, man, hell's been getting a bad rap, it ain't so bad, check this out!" he gives bird a solid gold sax, and brings him to a session where all the best players who ever lived are burning through a smokin' chart ... and the first chair is empty. bird sits down to play, thinkin' "hmm, ya know, this sh*t ain't so bad after all!" they read through the chart, go back to the top, read through the chart again, go back to the top, bird turns to the guy sitting next to him and says "hey man, where's the coda?" and the guy says mournfully "no coda, man" ... But then you knew that Bilbo. Garry

I did a tour playing Bass with that lot... Then went back for more a couple of years ago in Berlin to do the show 'Daddy Cool' Its about time i got myself a life me thinks. Garry
Pretty sure it isn't Pino. Wrong sound for starters, he was still Stingraying all over the place back then. Is it just me, or is there some slightly wobbly intonation in places (always sets my teeth on edge when I hear the song)..?
Sure is.. I transcribed the part last night Why? you may ask. It was that or Coronation street and Eastenders. Garry
To be blunt, if there's one thing you don't do that would be to f*** with someone's wedding plans. The bride will hound you to your grave I don't want to make a bad situation worse but two months is no time at all to book another band. Certainly round my way, the good wedding bands are booked years in advance. By trying to be helpful you've probably done a bad thing. Pull out, grovel, learn valuable lesson!
Very wise words Garry
I've had over 100 Basses through my hands in the last decade a lot of them high end instruments....
Thats a lot of Basses in ten years... What are you a Termite? If you are going custom, spend time doing a good amount of research.. Woods, pups etc... I did, and my Bass turned out to be my dream. Good luck! and i will keep my eyes open in the Basses for sale section in about a years time. Garry
The other classic is when people take all their fingers off the board to change strings.
So would you suggest never change your strings? Sorry Rich, out of context. And you are right, wasted energy indeed. Garry
Has this bass got a Jackson-style headstock (pointy)?
I thinks its awesome to show just what can be done with a bass guitar! It can be a beautiful lead instrument.
I think so to... Just a shame it seems to get such a panning on Basschat. Kevin Glasgow's arrangement of 'My Romance' sounds great. Garry
