1. Actually Graham's Site looks like a useful place. Maybe saying hello at his introduction would have gone down better. Oh well no harm done. Welcome Graham. Garry
 2. I would have thought Midi files are the way to go. Download the file and strip out the tracks you dont need. If its an 01 midi file, it will all be on separate tracks. You can then change endings, keys and use your own sounds. Plenty of free ones out there, some are crap, but if you look around some are ok. I have done plenty for my wife's Duo, [ she or they then pays me in other ways ] Saves the time of transcribing the original track. Garry
 3.
I'm not interested in choosing between them. Two great players, both Jamerson and Kaye. It's not either one or the other. Stupid question - it's like being in primary school.
+1 Garry
 4.
Using my own drummer; first I havent got one trained (bring out the gimp etc etc LOL!) and second, I dont really think that would look great either, "Your drummer is so difficult to reign in that I brought along Gimp here, he can count to four and plays real good, mind if he sits in?".
Why not? He might get the gig as well. Garry
 5. You could ask them if you could use your own drummer for the audition. Garry
 6.
They felt their drummer was (and I quote) "on one a bit" and thus not helping the funk flow As a result the groove wasnt quite the Motown, funky soul thing they were after, and would I be willing to work with them some more to show that I can cop the feel that they are after. Note, they are posistive I can, its a question of whether I want to (duh!!)
That seems to be a bit of a worry.... I presume he is the regular drummer? And he is having trouble playing songs he has done before. I think after the audition it should have been a case of........ 'look, i will let you know man...[ then chew your lip]... the drummer is a bit of a worry' I hope it works for you. Garry
 7.
for a mellow Marcus cop his Modulus Fretless Shenanigans on Legends DVD Miller + Gadd is Mighty Good
+1 Its funny that when people chat about the fretless players about... Marcus never seems to get a mention... He has done some great stuff, with superb intonation. Oh yer.."Boogie On Reggae Woman" Phat Drummers and Phat Bass lines - good combination. Garry
 8.
Maybe the Lotto comment refers to 'making it' as a well known, respected 'first-call' session bassist such as Guy Pratt, Nathan East etc.
Thats why i said .. 'Also what a person defines as pro Muso' Booze and bugger made me snigger. After seeing what some people get up to on Cruise ships... Garry
 9.
Pro... check House... check children... check food..... check booze...... bugger
Garry
 10.
Here's my advice: Realise that you have a better chance of winning the lottery then 'making it' as a pro musician.
I am not sure about that one. Lottery is luck, big time. I dont know any lotto winners, but i know plenty of full time muso's Full time Muso is down to hard work. Also what a person defines as pro Muso.... driving up and down the country in the back of a Van hoping to get some kind of deal with original tunes. Or, the more realistic approach [ or not, that depends on the hard work ] Shows,Cruises,Functions, sessions, etc, maybe combined with Teaching and composing for media etc, and this approach is much more common these days, than just an out and out gigging bassist. Garry
 11.
Another Pro here. *waves* Some of the things that I have found to be important for my career are......... -Good reading skills........for theatre work, sessions, big bands or bands with a large pad. -A quick ear..............to be able to learn songs on the fly, either in a studio or on a gig. -Decent knowledge of theory.........don't want to play a major 7 over a dominant chord. -Stylistic Diversity.........Rock,Pop,Jazz,Country,Funk,Big band etc - Versatility..........MD-"Can you play more/less notes?" Me-"No Problem". Transposing a tune, changing the groove etc. -Good technique.......No point being able to read a hard chart if my hands can't play it. -Doubling on Electric and Upright........doubled my work load. These are just some of the skills that have really helped me with being a Professional musician. Of course there are other, non musical things, like Personality,Image,Attitude,Having a Reliable car -I could go on.
A big +1 to all that.... I would add to a quick ear, that also means having a large repertoire of tunes under your belt... although Doddy might have been leaning towards that when he said 'on the fly'. There is also the other side, composing... many, many Opportunities these days, with hundreds of digital broadcast stations around. They all want and need Music. Its not a closed shop anymore. Along with teaching, all part of being a full time Muso these days. Its not just about being a Bass player. Garry
 12. Mr Alphonso Johnson was and still is a dude on Bass. Listen to your Dad more. And keep eating your carrots and greens, you will get to like them to. Garry
 13. If you wanna be one of the lads as far as session's go ...... Get yourself sorted with a good recording set up and a FTP client. Then you can do sessions in the nude while watching Eastenders. Thats if you dad aint busy downloading 'Debbie does Dallas' and sniffing glue. Garry
 14. Nice Ray Brown line here for Ain't Misbehavin' Enjoy...... Garry

 16.
If he was talking to you about this thread, he was probably giving you sound advice.
+1... and a couple of jokes thrown in... Garry
 17.
However, most the the stuff on offer is the same old soporific standards that make me want to eat my own face.
I think that really depends on who is playing 'the same old soporific standards' But i know what you mean. Garry
 18. Confirmation - Niels Pederson. If you are into NP. This one has plenty of kicks and triplets. Garry
 19. Stella by Starlight - Paul Chambers. 2 feel then into 4's. Edit... Just noticed that when it goes into the walking line [ actually the swing 8 notes - A section ] The first 2 notes should be E Naturals and not Eb's. Garry
 20. Alps Loos is an anagram of slap solo. Adolf Loos was responsible for a design of building in the Austrian Alps. There is some info below...... which is about as useful as a slap solo in the Uk these days... According to some Basschatters........ Khuner Country House Alpenhof Kreuzberg, Fam. Steiner A-2650 Payerbach Kreuzberg 60 Austria Adolf Loos and Heinrich Kulka 1930 The Khuner Country House is a late work of Loos, completed when he was sixty, in the same year as the Villa Müller in Prague. Like the Villa Müller, a restrained (in this case somewhat traditional) facade hides a subtle interior design of different room heights – Loos' Raumplan. Garry
 21. Hi Mike, hope all is well. Nice looking Bass.... Have a Bump on me. Garry
 22.
Ah, that'll be digital before they worked out how to make it sound good then. Not that I'm some sound obsessed speaker designing audiophile weirdo or anything... Alex
It think it was supposed to be the ideal reference CD at the time, Because of the pristine sound [of that time] Garry
 23.
...okay, enough for one night!
Its a pity there is not one dedicated place for scores / parts / charts etc, a library sort of thing, a bit like the groove library thread. There is plenty of good stuff scattered all over Basschat. Garry
 24. Walk Beneath the Raindrops... Was it Will Lee on Bass? Garry
 25.
i might need a courier to pick up a bass cab and deliver to me.have read some of the pinned thread on here so thought i would get a quote from interparcel, standard is £22 +vat, economy £6.99 +vat.is it worth taking a chance on the cheaper option?Has anybody used the economy option?must be some small print somewhere
If its a Glockenklang - No. If its Behrenger - Yes, and hope it gets damaged...
