I just think using sequencers tends to make songs a bit stiff.
Yes they can, But thats down to programming the Midi info and not sticking to the grid. Thats the Art [ if you can call it that ]. Plenty of serious dude's around these days who have got that down. When not done properly, yep does sound awful. Garry
 2.
That's kind of my point - suggesting ways to get out of playing in venues like that.
Teej, I keep forgetting to mention.. I love 'The Ukes of Hazzard' You've Got a Friend is tops dude. Garry
 3.
That's a recording not a live performance. Isn't this thread about using backing tracks in a live situation?
Personally I couldn't give a rat's arse. Just joining in the fun! Garry
 4.
One of my small group Latin oufits has a percussionist who uses, amongst other things, a Cajon. Its a surprisingly versatile instrument
Be even more versatile if it had a Midi trigger on it. I am for Augmenting situations when need be. And over the years i have never walked away from a working situation Thinking the 8 bar whatever sample on track in the middle section of whatever pulled down the musical integrity of the situation, Or the rest of us the Band/Orchestra are fakes. I do know in some situations it does not work well or at all, in a swing Jazz situation for example...or i have never heard it work to my ears. The funny thing to me is that there are plenty of Musicians who do not like the idea of tracks But will post MP3's of them selves all over tinternet Jamming or telling us they are being creative, Playing over loops etc, that they put together in Logic, Reaper, Cubase or whatever. Thats using trax aint it. Each to their own and what works in their situation. Pretty much sure 99% of an Audience in a pub would not know or care less What you did - as long as 'Valerie' or 'Who let the dogs out' was in the set list. [And Mustang Sally] Garry
 5.
Well at least I helped start a conversation
FFS...
 6.
No, it's still tacky faked-up nonsense, it's just that fewer people will have the guts to say so out loud.
And why would that be then? They have a PC/MAC screen to hide behind. Garry
 7.
If there's a way of programming a computer to simulate an orchestra, why wouldn't you use it. At least then you can allow people to hear your music.
That is so true. All the major composers for Hollywood films [ and many others] Use Orchestral 'mock ups' [not muck ups]to give to the director, so he has a great idea on how the score is progressing and will sound. Then its easy and cost effective to make changes as they go. [ and there is usually many] Rather then a copyist running around the scoring stage on the day with a pen and tipex, or his laptop printing off more parts when the Orchestra could be playing. Music and technology go hand in hand, always has. And more to the point always will. Garry
 8. Any one fancy playing solo Bass to the Philharmonia Orchestra? Here you go... Sequencer and their own Orchestral Samples, for your use or remix. Every one's at it...! It aint gonna go away... Nigel Kennedy might just be eyeing this up. http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/thesoundexch...usic/sequencer/ Garry
 9.
I can see it now: Nigel Kennedy playing the Royal Albert Hall with a backing tape of the London Philharmonic. Marvellous.
Perhaps the LPO might prefere that. Garry
 10. I think it should be called Augmenting tracks. Because thats what you are doing. I have done countless shows and tours with large bands that have been Augmented with some kind of extra percussion or stg and brass parts or even 2nd guitar parts, or whatever with the use of a click. And it aint anything new. The Who used a reel to reel in the early days of Wont Get Fooled Again, live [the Arp synth part] Would not call them unmusical, whatever your taste in music is. Go for it. Garry
 11.
I love Jamerson's work but the Jackson 5 give me such a headache...
I think you mean the 'Jackson 4' And yep a great line. Garry
 12.
methinks I'll try both ways and see what works best for me Sam
Always the best route. Everybody has different hand sizes, touch etc... Do you like playing hard or soft... Do you attack the note, or stroke it... String spacing.... It all comes into play. Garry
 13. Anchor on the back pick up with thumb here.. [5 string] Pluck with two fingers, And dampen with my pinkie finger. [which also makes it easier to palm mute for me- just drop the wrist] Have done for about 35 years. Garry
 14.
Exactly what I thought. Couldn't see those guys elbowing in on the guitar market but - given the fact that I'm pretty sure about 50% the vintage Fenders you see on ebay (and occasionally on here) come out of China - I guess it's a possibility! I saw the thread title and thought a BCer had grassed a Chinese seller to ebay and was regretting it Chris
If he had had a misunderstanding with the Triads, He would not be posting on Basschat. But would be on the menu in Chinatown. Garry
 15.
alright so its a second inversion of C major - but whats stopping it from being a chord of G major? because G, E and C are all in G major as well
Nothing is stopping it. But what key are we talking about here? C or G ? or even F. If you are in the key of G.... The triad you are talking about would be chord 4 [IV] of the scale/key of G. If in the key of C the triad you are talking about would be the root/tonic chord. Also in the key of F, it would be chord V [dominant chord] In my head i know what i am banging on about, Maybe one of the teachers around these parts, [Jakesbass] might be able to explain better. This might be of help [or not ] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_scale Garry
 16. Yep one of the greats.... still is really.. What i mean is he is still alive and dancing Garry
 17.
Hello, let's take this random chord. I play 1st, 4th and 6th note of G major, so: G D 2 A 3 E 3 isnt that the same as the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of C major? but with the 5th lowered an octave? (is this an inversion?) which chord would it be then? Thanks Ahmed
Looks like you are using tab there. Its just a C second inversion. Or as is usually written in chord charts, C/G........[ C over G bass ] Garry
 18.
Carol Kaye told me she was the best!
Was she? I hope you wore a condom. Garry
 19.
If you asked the general public most of them wouldn't even know that Macca played bass. Alex
Infact they would think Bass is some kind of fish they ate in Málaga on holiday. Garry
 20.
if you still have Steely Dan, Bonnie Rait and the 2 Stings, please PM
You have PM. Garry

 22.
They'll all need hip replacements by the time they're 40 if they carry on like that.....
I think you mean Hip Hop replacements. Then they might break into the music business rather then break their own necks. Garry
 23.
hi people, im in a predicament, Ive sold both my 4s got my warwick dolphin 5 Which im selling. But i got my sei six that i swapped with my thumb six and my shuker 6 fretless that i got for a lovely 600.00. I want a bass made but am struggling to warrant the cost. I love my sei six and just had a shack put into it it fits me like a glove i cant fault it and i dont play my others (thats why im selling them)since i swapped it. Bought my fretles shuker on a whim!!!!! i love it and am planning to get lessons and start maybe a few jazz jams. now when i bought the shuker the guy i got it from said to me there is nothing like having a bass made for you... but there are so many nice basses for decent dough im struggling to warrant buying a new one. i played a sei jazz in the gallery the other day and it was sweet very sweet and i could have it for 1500, or any ones on here, still have my sei six, shuker six and save up and get a 4 string later next year. Any ideas guys and girls and us undeciseve ones!!! and ps kindest regards to all who have contacted me regarding my posts. regards Ziggy/john.
I think i get what you mean dude. It was hot in Essex today Garry
 24.
In the beginning, there was GAS, a Sadowsky was bought and the GAS ceased. Now, I have a diferent kind of burn. A friend gave me an old precision body, that got way altered, parts were bought, and slowly but surely my first Frankenstein was built. I honestly didnt expect much, but I was honestly blown away by the results. It wasnt perfect at first, it took another neck than the one I'd bought for it initially, it'll take yet another pickup to replace a sub-par one that's on it, but, over all, I think I did a pretty decent job. is a P+MM with an aguilar obp3 and a Dr Parts Jazz Neck. So, there's only the MM pup that needs replacing at the moment to get that bass to God-like status, ... So, I find myself looking for new challenges. now THIS was unexpected... its like Im GASsing for my next Frankenstein project... Not really for just having a "new" bass, but because I enjoyed getting such a kick*ss result from my first one, all for the price of a Squier VM... So, there's a new one in the making, the base being a Squier jazz 5 Deluxe. This one is one of those rare Sqiers that had quite a decent build, and amazingly enough, the 5th is tight There are drawbacks of course, as Selling Frankenstein basses is almost as hard as selling sh*tty low rung basses... What are your thoughts on this?
This sounds like 'Trigger Broom Syndrome' to me, not Gas.... Garry
 25.
WOW, I love Grusin's arranging, his best attribute, and he's a damn fine pianist too... Pattitucci's Pollmann sounds awesome and the whole thing is really swinging, great great playing. Thanks Garry Jake
Dave Grusin has a very melodic and lyrical style in his composing also. He has written some top draw scores and has a unique playing style. You just know its him. Garry
