That may well be true. A Kind Of Blue is one of my favourite albums but his trumpet playing just doesn't do much for me.
Just curious mate. If you dont like Miles playing, What is it about A Kind of blue you like? Garry
Ah the jazz argument. There are always going to be people who tell you "if you don't like THAT, your mad, listen to this , it's great, you like THAT? it's sh*te. Well at the end of the day it's all only music whether it's got 2 chords or 167 chords and 15 key changes. If you like something, it's good for you, if you don't, then it's not. Some think that jazz is some kind of deep philosophy. It's just music, some you can tap your foot to and some you can't like anything else. I love loads of jazz that others would call crap but who cares. Get some songs you like and try and learn them. Must be the place to start I would imagine. I don't think "Jazz" needs analyzing. Just my opinion. I'll now wait for the floodgates to open.
Big +1... Funny thing about all the players mentioned in this post. Like or dislike them, they all have one thing in common. You know its them, from sound and style, From Jaco to Marcus, Sanborn to Miles, and every other mentioned on the Forum. They are all unique.... Not much of that about these days... All been done before. Garry
A friend emailed this video to me a few months ago. Here's the back story: "...Film-maker Mark Johnson traveled around the globe getting street musicians and others to record part of the track for "Stand By Me." Using battery powered equipment and a pocket full of Frequent Flier miles he got tracks from dozens of performers. Each one was able to wear headphones and hear what the other performers had done..." The website is: http://www.playingforchange.com/
I have seen some out takes from some of the early stuff they did, and it was hilarious. I hope it dont turn up on you tube - that would not be good. Garry
Eh? how hard can it be to count 1-2-3-4 in a consistent and rhythmic way?
Depends where you count 1-2-3-4...? Before the beat, on the beat, or after the beat. Counting beats aint the problem, its where you place then. Garry

Just made the end of it - 1969.. I was fourteen and playing in a Irish country and western band... £4.00 a gig... I had a Selmar amp and cab. And a copy Gibson EBO or 3.. Then my dad went on tour to the States.. And he lent me one of his Jazz basses. I never gave it back..... Because Disco had arrived..wey hey! And by the way - in those days nobody needed a strap on...!! Garry

For the people who like FS... The album LA is my lady - is superb. There is a studio DVD of the session, well worth a watch, With the great Ray Brown on Bass. There is some very serious players on show. Garry

A bit off reading practise for 5 Stg. [ well low notes anyway - although you could play it up the octave ] Here is the Basic chart for Jamaica funk... Just add your own fills. Has been posted in another post... But its getting lost amongst all the fun going on there. Garry
Everybody is talking about these funk monsters... but what about the girls? We've got Meshell Ndegeocello - but who are the real groovers with the feel amongst the ladies?
Rhonda Smith can play a bit... She did some gigs with a guy called Prince. I think he pays better wages than a Saturday night at the Red Lion. Garry
"f*** fingerings, it's all in how you pull the strings!"
What no fingerings! Back to knuckles then. Garry
If you like Tom Browne, you should check out his contemporaries/collaborators Don Blackman and Bernard Wright. I always thought Jamaica Funk was about the Island but it's a neighbourhood in Queens, New York.
Yep all good stuff. Might be worth AM checking out the great Paul Jackson as well...good finger style. Garry
There's so much great funk music out there. I kind of agree with Alex about steering clear of trying to cop Rocco or the Jamaica, Queens, NY '80s funk or the N'awlins Meters funk until you get your head around the funk in general
You should never stear clear of any FUNK!.. Listen to as much as possible, Its good for the soul. But you are right, playing it is another thing. A basic chart for Jamaica... Add your own fills for taste...[not to show off] Garry

Commercial funk this one - but a f**k off Bass line.. Garry
I think what he meant was it's getting the groove that's the difficult bit. It's all about groove!!
Thats exactly what i meant when i said there was a swing [16th] about the groove. Garry
Even Sex Machine, which is not that tough of a riff, is really taxing on people coming from a rock/punk/blues or even jazz rhythmic background. Bootsy laid down some of the all time ultimate funk grooves with JB, and a lot of them use very natural sounding, but really hard to nail 16th note syncopation, and the real trick is he often played lines that syncopate off different 16th notes each beat in the bar.
No its not a tough riff, Its the swing feel that Bootsy played, that tells it apart from a lot of guys i hear play it. Garry

Feeling natural about playing syncopation. is a good start. Its Not always about what scales or modes you use. If you play a phrase just using octaves, ghost notes, and rests, [ say in G for ex ] And its well syncopated, or accented at other points other than just one, done right can be very Funky. Rocco from TOP does a lot of that. Even when he is using fast 16th patterns there is plenty of syncopation and accents. Garry
