1. Fender Custom shop relicing just seems like an excuse to slap another couple of grand on the price tag. I mean are the Dusty Hill signature or the Jaco Custom relics really £4k+ basses? As far as I can tell there's no fancy woods or electronics in either bass and the relicing must be done via some sort of template to get them all looking identical, so unless both models are being hand whittled from a single tree trunk I just can't see how they justify their price tags.
2.
Awsome!!
Yep. I had no idea he could play guitar. I was never that interested in Bruno Mars but since his last few singles and now this I'm beginning to be seriously impressed with him.
3.
She did actually say anti white comments in a music magazine in the late 90,s. Doesn't matter.
No probs
4.
an absolute soul classic now imo..the racist Lauryn Hill accompanying
OT but the Lauren Hill racism thing is a bit of an urban myth. http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/laurynhill.asp
5. There's a lot going on in Birmingham, also excellent transport links to Wolverhampton and Coventry which are also pretty decent.
6.
http://youtu.be/W3XrLf4v0uI
Hair metal blues, cheesy as cheese but I still love it.
7. Another demo here. http://youtu.be/AOVsCSdn6GA Amazing sounding thing, has an almost John Carpentery synth sound to it. It would definitely work on the soundtrack of Stranger Things.
8. It might be worth checking Thomann as their prices fluctuate quite a lot, pretty much on a daily basis, depending on the exchange rate. On big ticket items that can actually translate into quite significant variations. Of the shops you've listed I've only used Bax. Bought some Aquilar jazz pickups from there early last year, about £30 cheaper than I could find them anywhere else, everything went completely smoothly. Though posting pickups from the continent is obviously a bit simpler than sending a bass or amp.
9. Might be a tiny drop of chorus, it sounds to me like it's mainly reverb or a very short delay.
10. Here's another nice europop cover. http://youtu.be/QHpU0ZfXZ_g
11.
You do have to wonder whether Donald's executive orders will have an impact on Fender's Mexican operations?
I seem to recall the Mexican Fenders main market is outside the US. US fenders are significantly cheaper in America, as a rough guide they generally cost in dollars what we pay sterling, so the Mexican models are less appealing. There's also a bit of snobbery over Mexican made goods. Whilst a new sales tariff might on Mexican goods might have a limited impact on sales by making the instruments more expensive in US, I can't see how it would affect us in the rest of the world.
12. Play with your fingertips, by that I mean literally the very tips of your fingers. I used to hit the strings with the pads of my fingers, and, probably because I was also digging in a bit hard, used to get fatigued after about half an hour of fast playing. I changed my style to almost brushing the strings, rather than plucking them and now I reckon I'd be be good for a four hour bar gig in Milwaukee. You may experience a loss of volume, but let the amp take the strain.
13.
Hah, I watched that whole Thundercat video thinking "that's the silhouette of Kamasi Washington isn't it", waiting for him to play, and he didn't make a single peep!
I did exactly the same. Thundercat is a member of the West Coast Get Down collective that originated out of a Californian state programme to encourage musically talented kids. They've all been been playing together for over 20 years, despite the fact that most of them are only in their early/mid 30s. They all play on each others solo projects, so Thundercat is on Kamasi's album and vice versa. Another member of the collective worth checking out is double bass player/vocalist Miles Mosley. His album came out recently and is well worth a listen.
14. It's a custom build from their California custom shop for famous persons. There's been a lot of demand for Ibanez to release a signature model available to Joe Public, but so far as I know they're still resisting. I did see some footage of one of his basses from the NAMM show last year & in the hands of anyone who isn't Thundercat it looked absolutely massive, so possibly Ibanez are thinking that might limit demand?
15. I'm sure I read that Scott's gloves have quite a short lifespan before they wear through and need replacing. He has to bulk order them.
16.
When you need another bass player on stage, it's not cool. His other bassist IS cool. *i do quite like TC tho.
I love a bit of Thundercat but although he plays a a bass guitar I'm not sure he qualifies as a bass player His approach to the instrument is a cross between a classical guitar and a keyboard.
17. Eff me, the Eminem stuff starts at roughly 2 mins in and there''s absolutely no doubt that's the sample. I had no idea. I always wondered about the references to caps in gangsta rap. Turns out Chas n Dave are going to pop a flat cap in yo B***h A** Mother F*****rs.
18. I'm a bit biased on this because I've just got one, but you might want to check out the Fender Deluxe P bass Special. It's a PJ with passive mode for classic tones and an excellent active preamp which gives you a huge range of tones. It's also got the jazz width neck. It'll set you back roughly the same as a Flea bass, but for my money is a lot more versatile than a jazz. If you don't fancy the fender it might be worth checking out other PJs as that combination of pickups really does give you an awesome range of sounds.
19. The thing that made the Arctic Monkeys stand out was the lyrics rather than the music. Alex Turner is head and shoulders the best lyricist of the last 25 years (IMO YMMV etc.).
20. I've always liked 'trouser flapping' as a descriptor for bass.
21.
Seven Nation Army
Bom da ba dum ba dah dum.(repeat, a lot) until da da da da dada dada.
22.
How you finding your new toy Cato. You've had it over week now. ? Dave
I just keep finding more things I like about it. Unfortunately I trapped one of my plucking fingers in a folding table at work the other day so I can barely play at the moment, at least not without knocking the scab on my fingertip off, which to be fair I've done at least once a night since the injury, as I can't resist picking the bass up and playing it.
23.
That looks rather lovely Nothing to fear with Mexican instruments and some of them are exceptionally good. I've been working on a Mexican Strat this week and might even ask the chap if he would consider selling it to me. Hope the gig goes well.
I've got a Mex thinline Tele which I bought c2000. To this day it remains pretty much my favourite skinny stringer I've ever played. My ex's dad had a fairly impressive collection of top end Gibsons and Fenders which we used to jam on from time to time. I wouldn't swap my mex Tele for any of them. That experience has given me complete confidence in Mexican Fender instruments, only reinforced by the mex deluxe precision special that arrived to live with me recently.
