1.
Funny how a couple of mm makes all the difference. I prefer less than 40mm, preferably 38mm. No way I can get comfortable with a 5 string. Yes, Dave, I believe the Jazz Bass Specials and Power Jazz Bass Specials are MIJ. There was a passive one sold on eBay in the last week for £380, which I think is an excellent price. Especially when you consider that some of the MIJ Squiers can fetch half as much again for no particualr reason that I can see.
I too much prefer 38mm but for me string spacing is also a concern. Im quite happy playing a 5 string (at least, the ones ive owned), yet cant get comfortable with a P neck. Must be old age as i never used to care about all this. Ive seen a few of those basses on eBay but just dont feel comfortable buying second hand away from Bass Chat. I got a JV Squier P bass when they were first launched. Fantastic bass for the money. I got rid of it about 7 years ago for around £350 as a trade in for a HW-1 Jazz. I was told that the big deal is the neck, as its come from the Fender factory. I would say that with so many good cheap basses/necks out now the JV's shouldn't be selling for what they are (or at least what some greedy people expect to get)
Ah! Well it felt much smaller than P basses usually do. STill not tight enough eh?! Still a great compromise, sounds great and plays fast and funky. Sorry for my ill informed ramblings! I'll get me coat!
The neck has the same specs as my CV P neck i believe so not totally unplayable. Ive been trying to get to grips with this neck for almost a year. Ive gigged with it and its a nice neck but i keep going back to the CV Jazz neck. Those vintage frets do make it feel more playable to me and much better than the usual medium-jumbo frets.
2.
I played this the other day: http://www.thebassgallery.com/product_deta...e=Bass%20Guitar I'd say it's the one to get unless you can find the Lakland 'Dunn' model (think it's name has changed recently). PLayed amazingly with the Jazz profile neck I'm used to, sounded every bit the growly, hollow P bass too. Might get myself one next year. It really is a FENDER P bass with a jazz neck !!
Thats a lovely looking bass, i wouldn't mind one myself but it has a P neck (41.3mm), the DD has a Jazz neck (38mm). Not a great deal in it i admit but having two necks with those nut sizes i much prefer the Jazz neck and do notice a difference. Bugger, P bass GAS now, especially as it has vintage style frets
3. Nice face, im mean bass ;-) I almost brought either a few times but never quite got around to actually doing it. I will one day though. Aren't the Power basses CIJ or MIJ?
4.
Having failed to secure either Duck Dunn that's been for sale on here,
Me too :-( Someone already mentioned the Fender Power Jazz Bass Special but i think these are quite hard to come by. You can get the Duff McKagan Signature bass, which i believe is based on the Power bass quite easily but its not particularly cheap.
5. I had one and it was a very nice bag. I tried to buy the unbranded version over here but no one sells them.
6. All this talk of the Streamliner is giving me GAS lol. Just kidding. Its a great head but i do think it can be quite fussy what cab its used with, as i found out. I agree with all the comments about it having loads of low end, giving each note a decent amount of punch, more so than any other head ive used, and the grit/distortion is nice. Its not an out and out dirty head in my experience, but it does have a nice edge to it if needed.
7. You really can't beat a black PG on a black or sunburst jazz bass IMO.
8.
Damn post. Please keep me updated?
Will do. Still nothing so hopefully monday.
9.
Ah, I thought it the Sonic Blue one. To be honest I would still want some £300 on top of a Squier or OLP. Trade wise I would be interested in a US Precision Black (With Maple), a Ray or a nice fretless. The price is a straight £500 collected or £535 shipped.
Thats the sort of figure i was also thinking but as i cant do anything until mid next week lets leave it for now, im sure you will find a good trade.
10. Oh bugger. I was desperate for one of these not so long ago. I have my one on my CVP but wanted one for the Jazz (or the other way around) and posted a trade for my CVP neck. Im now very keen on a Mighty Mite Jazz neck instead as i fancy a maple FB so this has come along just a bit too late (unless you want a CVP neck for it). These necks are fantastic though, im sure you wont wait too long before it sells.
11. When i was looking for a Fender P5 a few years ago i called and/or emailed 5 UK stores (all had websites but they were also bricks and mortar) to see if they had them in stock as all were advertising it on their website. All but one said no but for a deposit they could order me one, and all insisted i couldn't return it if i didnt like it as it was a special order. Why, if they are advertising them on their website were they "special order"? No mention of this on their websites. I went to Thomanns and will do again (and again) as they are the only ones that treated me like i was a paying customer and not someone that wanted to pay over the odds to be treated like a mug. I dont mind supporting local shops but they need to meet me half way.
12.
and it looks like for the second gig in a row I have to play through a f***ing ashdown... /rage
Sorry, shouldn't laugh but thats the best Ashdown comment ive ever read.
13. Get your glasses on, this is the 3D version :-)
14. The only pic i have since i did the mod is this one. Oh yeah, i forgot to add its got a black PG on but i do have the original one as well.
15.
Currently on the bay, basschatters get priority. Might consider an olp or classic vibe P plus cash?
Ooooooo, im happy to throw in my CV P as part of the deal. How much would you be thinking of knocking off? My CVP has a Gotoah 201 bridge and a Fender 62RI pup in it at the moment.
16. Actually ive gone off them already. I just dont like that long top horn. No reflection of the bass itself though.
17. Not received mine yet but our post is erratic anyway, im sure ill get them before Christmas.
18. No, you buy it before I do ;-). I'm not keen on the Hanson pup but I'm sure combined with the pre amp It will sound fantasic. If I wasn't moving I would have this now.
19. Thanks Michael (and Steve of course) . Ive just kicked my son off Roblox to have a look. Looks like a Hanson pup as well (red and black wires so not a Fralin). Quite interested again now but with us moving flat on Tuesday i cant really get my head around buying anything for a few days.
20. I'm stuck on my iPhone this morning so can't see the pics clearly. Sounds interesting though.
21. Hmmm, I'm getting Yamaha GAS now. Other than a Blazer as my first bass I've never really looked at a Yamaha. Not wishing to hijack the thread but keeping the cost to around £300-400 what Yamaha has a jazz sized neck? Cheers.
22. Other than the above mentioned headstock bashing during gigs I would question why most people would need to tune up during a gig. No offence meant, it's just that I've never gone out of tune whilst playing live. I know some de tune for certain songs so I suppose a tuner is needed. Maybe I don't play had enough.
23. Ive been struggling to buy a new bass recently but my heart just isnt in it. I guess this must mean I'm content with my gear, for now.
24. Thank god for that. Now I can go and but some flooring for the new flat, apparently :-(
25.
Thanks Simon. I have now bought a Gramma pad
Welcome to the club. I had a few strips of platfoam before getting mine but threw them away.
