1.
Great collection Nig! The room looks cool too and your choice of album covers is fabulous.. Are you also a Kraftwerk fan like me, or do you just like the album artwork? I remember seeing Steve Hillage at the Queen free Hyde Park Concert in 1976.. And I once had a huge row with him in a rehearsal studio in Holloway Rd about 8 years later, but that's another story!!
Thanks very much Nik. Half of those covers are Mrs silddx's, Kraftwerk is hers, Mine seem to be all prog rock and hippie things. They're all real covers. I wish I'd been at that Hyde Park show! I would love to hear the Hillage story! He seems like a very opinionated and forthright bloke, I wonder sometimes if he believes/ed all that stuff his lyrics are about
2. If you described that bass by words only, I'd probably have puked, but the strange thing is, it is really, really beautiful and I feel quite emotional.
3. What a superb thread!
4. Cheers all Yes, I have seven anuses arranged very carefully, and I love Hillage (is that bad ) and I finally got to chat to him, after 30 years of being a devotee, in the party after the London gig in November, really cool bloke and he told me he goes fishing in the same places I do on the Kennet. He's the last remaining hippie don't you know!
5. I sometimes just stand there with a glass of chilled white wine and a ciggie, and stare at them with dewey eyes. Sad isn't it Don't have a favourite as such, it depends how I'm feeling and which band I'm concentrating on at the time, the Steiny is a hell of a laugh at gigs. I can't wait to gig the Wilkins Jazz on the 21st Jan though, got a nice headline show at Passing Clouds in Dalston with Doreen. The Wilkins is a beauty, I've put up a pic of the blocks, just for Gareth
6.
Thanks you two! I might appear odd being so careful with my gear, especially to my old band who just didnt 'get it', but I figure you may as well look after it
Nothing odd about that at all, mate. My Wilkins Jazz looks like it's just been born and I want it to stay that way!
7.
I can attest that when I sold this to Gareth it was an absolute minter and a lovely bass - assuming he hasn't smashed it over the head of the London rental agent today (see his other posts) I would guess that it remains in superb nick as he is a stickler for keeping his gear pristine. Superb bass, somebody buy it and you will be very happy Trust me I'm a doctor (well, a biochemist but .... hey )
I played it at the Clarky/Gareth handover too, and further attest to Clarky's attestation. It's a cracker, and I actually can't believe it's going for less than £750 tbh. It was totally mint then, and since I had Gareth's '96 Oly white MIJ off him at the same time, I can augment my previous attestation that Gareth keeps his instruments in pristine condition.
8.
I've always had a soft spot for the Wing series Washburns
Me too, I thought the top of the range (Falcon? Eagle?) white guitar with all the pearl inlays and bindings and the gold hardware was totally lovely.
9. Yes, but can you hear what those shapes sound like within the context of a piece of music?
10.
Was lucky to catch them on their last tour (Thunder & Lightning LP) in 1982.
Me too! Saw them in Coventry Theatre with Girlschool supporting. They were so, so good.
11. It's ooking like I might have three albums out this year. My goal is to do my day job to the best of my ability, pass my professional diploma with very high marks and still be able to say my main focus is music. It's slightly stressing me already.
12. He was fabulous. I nearly auditioned as a guitarist for him, but he died just before I got my chance (I wouldn't have got the gig, no good at the beautiful chords he would have wanted at the time) I was so sad, he was a hero to me. Sarah is still one of my favourite songs.
13. It depends on the injury doesn't it, what did you do to your hand and which was it? I smashed up my left (fretting hand) wrist ten years ago on a motorcycle, radius and ulna both completely broken. I spent a couple of months in plaster and then a wrist splint. I played acoustic guitar three hours a day at least during all this time and my mobility and strength came back really well and very quickly according to the rehab nurse, who expressed some surprise. Keep in there mate but get advice from an expert.
14.
I am NOT Dan O'Bannon. AKA Squarepusher.
Er, Dan O'Bannon was a producer on ALIEN wasn't he? Don't you mean Tom Jenkins? Or is there a very clever joke in there that I've missed?
15.
I don't care! - I'd forgot about this and am now settling down in front of M. Poirot with a bottle of port, cheese & crackers & Mrs Hamster! Nice one Nigel!
Wickid! Good start too. Much better than Ms Marple the other night, that wasn't very good TBH.
16.
I want to be you Nig but I'm far too hot
Wait 'til I get on that stage again! I'll be totally smokin'
17. I am really looking forward to the new Poirot this evening! I'm just about to serve roast beef, horseradish cream and Yorkshires. Then wine and a smoke and settle in the sofa with my queen to watch Poirot
18.
My new made up 'stage' look... IF I had a band... *sob* I'll stop photo who**ng now
Get in a band THIS MINUTE young lady! You are too much the hottie to be sitting at home watching Poirot this evening
19. Regarding the OP, we have a saying in my country which sums up my country's attitude to anything "clever". "Clever" is bad, if someone in my country does something "clever" it means they must be arrogant and suffering a lack of decorum by making his fellows feel inadequate. The saying is "Too clever by half" and, as a respected commentator recently pointed out, my country must be the only one in the world where such a saying could exist.
20. Singing, even silently in your head, is much more free expression than playing notes on an instrument where you are constrained by technical and physical limitations. My best bass lines are always a result of what I have sung in my head, it's much more a reflection of me and therefore I am happier with the results. It's easy enough to to sing what you play, but can you play what you sing? If you can play what you sing at the same time, you know you have a certain mastery of the instrument. That's the biggest single thing I have learned in a very long while, when Jakesbass told me in a lesson I had with him that I was singing what I was playing, not the other way round. I have a single goal now - to be able to play anything I sing without having to think about it. But it's a massive climb.
21.
Well, the way I look at this is this: if it sounds ok, then it probably is ok.
That's exactly it.
22. Thanks very much for the pinch on the Status fellas! Unfortunately, I am convinced it won't fit without major surgery. I leveled and dressed the frets and the action's down a little, I think I can live with it, possibly
23. Thanks very much, guys, appreciated. I'm really reluctant to let this bas go. I played it for a little bit yesterday after having cased it a couple of weeks ago, and I'm wondering what to do, it really felt like an old mate. A bass has to go though and I love the new Wilkins Jazz too. I suppose it's a nice decision to have to make but I wish I didn't have to.
24.
I guarantee you won't get this special offer on any other item for sale on here !
Thanks mate.
25. Bump Hav a very happy new year
