Steinberger Spirit - I need a carbon neck to fit it
xilddx replied to xilddx's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks gents, I'll pursue some of these suggestions. To answer Burpster's last comment, the neck isn't warped, it's just got the common bolt-on problem where the truss rod only affects part of the neck. It's not too bad, I'll mess around with it a bit more. The pups and tronics are probably going to have to go too. -
Steinberger Spirit - I need a carbon neck to fit it
xilddx replied to xilddx's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks for that, I hadn't thought Status might be able to do something of that order so the suggestion is gratefully received. I thought i might struggle with this one to be honest. The existing neck isn't too bad but it won't take a low action, got a bit of a snake relief going on so a serious fret level is the only other option. -
Hello! (I'm not a bassist yet but I want to learn)
Saw current issue in WHSmith's in Leamington over a week ago. My subscription copy STILL hasn't been delivered. Not impressed.
Mmm, I got my first subs copy just before Christmas, but no strings? I think i've missed out on the DRs, they have Rotosounds now which I detest with some passion.
Two more little things I'd change about this magazine I keep saying I like : 1) For every bass reviewed, I'd like to see full-length shots of the front and back (and it's nice to have the full-page shot of the body like they usually do), and I'd like the other pictures to be of relevant bits of the instrument without duplication. There have been a few times (although no specific examples spring to mind now) where the text has mentioned a point of particular aesthetic interest, but there's been no picture of that point, while there are three pictures of the neck laminates or something. 2) Captions. Sweet baby Jebus, this annoys the p*ss out of me. So many of the pictures in BGM are uncaptioned. If there's a picture of a band without instruments (or even a group of bassists), more often than not there's no indication of who's who in the picture. I know it doesn't really make that much difference, but it'd be nice to put a name to a face.
Again, agree completely, lack of captions to photographs, and no rear shots of basses gets on my nerves too.
A little request to any BGM instrument reviewers that might be reading: We don't need to be told that "the bridge has individual saddles that allow you to adjust string height and intonation". That is surely a given in this day and age, even on the cheapest basses. It would be wise and prudent to point out if that isn't the case (like on a vintage bridge reissue), or if there's a particularly unusual way the saddles adjust (y'know... spin round three times, invoke the goddess Artemis and eat a caper before loosening a locking bolt). I'm sure there are other little cliched phrases throughout all the reviews, but that's the one that slaps me in the face. Every time I see that little sentence (and I see it or something like it in a hell of a lot of the bass reviews in BGM), it makes it look like the reviewer's got a dog-eared "writing a review checklist" next to their computer. "Hmmm. Hardware... checklist item 1... does the bridge have individual saddles that allow you to adjust string height and intonation? Why, yes it does! I'd better put that in." I should point out that, although every month I come on here and point out a few of the glaring mistakes I've noticed, I like BGM a lot and it's improving every month.
Well said and I agree with your final point too.

I have a Steinberger Spirit double neck but I want to replace the slightly lame quality wooden neck with a bolt on carbon neck. Trouble is I can't find anyone who makes them, Moses don't, Steinberger don't as far as I know. Anyone have any ideas where I might find one to fit? Cheers.

I love MIJ Squiers. MIJ Silver series are really nice too.
Our drummer is ex Status Quo, with them for 14 years (Jeff Rich), a very nice guy and excellent drummer. Jeff also has worked with Climax Blues Band, Judie Tzuke and Def Leppard.
Thought he and Rhino were a brilliant R-Section with Judie Tzuke.

I played one a few weeks ago in the Bass Cellar and I thought it was rather good, the 'board was a bit dry but it played well and seemed well made.
Cold won't damage a bass, neither will heat. There are bass players in Alaska and Libya, they get by. It's the change that does the damage, especially rapid change. If you can ensure that the change happens gently then you should be OK. A bass left in a decent hardcase or gigbag in a van should change temperature really slowly. It will be an hour or so before the interior of the van cools down enough to start affecting the hardcase, and at least another hour or so before the interior of the hardcase gently cools down the bass. Trouble is, you now have a freezing cold bass which needs to warm up again at the same rate that it cooled down. Get in a freezing van, drive it for two hours with the heating on, and you'll be fine. If the gig is only 10 minutes away, you could have a problem. DISCLAIMER! If you left your open hardcase in a freezing van, then slung your bass into it after the gig and wandered off for a curry, that is NOT covered by my comments above.
I think Jack's right. Nitro is highly susceptible to rapid temp changes as others have said. I've read some horror stories. Do you think instruments get a nice warm cosy aeroplane hold when they get shipped from the manufacturer?

"This bass isn't designed to have a low action"

Love the OP, brilliant I know where you're coming from, I deeply sympathise and I still can't understand the big fuss about Fender with their awful QC. -
SINGLECUT ESHENBAUGH 5 BLACK FOREST (Fodera Carl Thompson)
xilddx replied to jobistre's topic in Basses For Sale
if you think 5000 usd is a cheap price, you are a lucky man
That's not what he implied at all. He was illustrating that ebayers get attention for their cheap stuff by tagging the title with big names. Solid? I think your title grabs more attention the way you have done it, but it won't really generate more chance of a sale because folks in the market for a Fodera on here are not likely to have their mind changed, they already know they want a Fodera, not a competitor. People on Basschat with that sort of money won't take chances and they will already know about Eshenbaugh. It's simply that you are new to Basschat, you have couched your sale with the aspect of an ebay listing, and you don't yet understand Basschat decorum. Good luck with your sale. -

Hello Wayne, I was in Music Ground in Leeds half an hour ago and they had sent your '74 Jazz to the Denmark Street branch yesterday. Shame, I was looking forward to trying it. I had a chat with the big fella about you, said you loved it I have to say, all three guys in there were really nice to me and Mrs silddx, helpful, pleasant, even had a laff with them, they were really cool.
+1 That explains a lot Nig...
Thanks a lot Nik, it does, but I am still going to find parting withe the 'vette $$ very painful.

Thank you very much I wasn't dissin Fenders as such, it's just I can never get the action low enough. I liked your USA P MM20 had off you actually. Very nice bass.
Are some pictures on there way so we can all see this new acquisition?
Check the bass porn in a few days I put my new Wilkins Jazz up there tonight - I even love looking at the pictures

I agree, I have old copies twice as thick. Once in a while I'll buy a copy.

Thanks very much gents MM20's lovely 62RI MIJ P gave me a bit of a hard on for something Fender-like. I like MIJ Fenders but don't dig on the USA ones that I've played and owned. So I thought I'd indulge in a Fender Killah. Something to rival my Corvette $$. This does it for me. I feel like it's a black tie and DJ event whenever I play it. Can't wait to gig it. I'll get some pics up of the white Steinberger double neck I just got from sixshooter. My band cracked up when they saw that last night But if she wants me to play bass and guitar in her band, I'll be buggered if I'm gonna carry separate instruments around. I'm only likkle - and so is my motor car.

Pat Wilkins does the finishes for many top end USA manufacturers like Lakland. He builds a few from top quality parts each year and they retail from between $2,300 to about $5,000. I bought this from BC's bobpalt, who's a diamond to deal with, cheers Bob. It's a beautiful player, medium low action, smooth and easy to play, the very wide range of tones from the DiMarzios and Demeter preamp are rich and sophisticated. The finish is off-white pearl, which is subtle and very beautiful. This is an extract from the email Pat sent me when I asked him about the bass a couple of weeks ago .. Hi Nigel This bass is made from parts that I collected from an outside source in Japan. The body wood is 2 piece alder, center seamed like I specified and the neck is maple with a rosewood fingerboard, bound with block inlays. I did all the work myself including the finish work, fret work and assembly. It has all the hardware and guts that I would use on one of my high end basses like Hipshot bridge and tuners, Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups and a Demeter 3 band preamp (bass, middle, treble boost and cut). It's got a bone nut and the cavities are shielded. Pretty much exactly like my high end basses. I was able to save a lot of money by not having to make the body and neck so I was able to keep the costs down on it. I believe that if I made this bass today the price would be between $2400-$2600 US. I hope this answers your questions. If you have any more questions please write back and I'll do my best to answer them. I hope you enjoy the bass for a long time.
