1. Andy, can you do some before and after soundclips?
 2.
Sorry, perhaps I didn't make myself clear - my basses are all passives and on those I leave everything up full. On actives, (which I have have owned, but never stuck with) everything is left in the notched, middle position. I find a tone in your email very slightly patronising (apologies if I am misreading this) but no I don't also turn my amp controls up to the maxmimum too. My point, which I thought I had already made clearly enough but I guess not was that I am enjoying removing the options for sound shaping from the bass - getting rid of the knobs and switches to fiddle with, and concentrating on make the best noise I can with my fingers, is that so wrong?
Sorry, I think I must have misread your post. I understand now, I thought you meant you bypassed your active electronics. I wasn't being patronising, sorry, I just meant turning up on-board active controls to full is the virtually the same as turning the controls on your amp up full. Apologies for my misunderstanding. What you've done is interesting actually, what difference in tone and output were there?
 3.
I meant to post this a while ago, but I recently bypassed all the electronics in my main bass and just run from the pickup straight to the jack. It's a P-Bass copy with a GFS pickup and it sounds absolutely HUGE as a result. I came to the realisation that almost always, I NEVER touch any of the controls on my basses and leave everything on maximum - this is partly why I've never got on with active preamps etc. The flipside to having no tonal control on your bass is it forces your to do it with your fingers - I've got more adept at going from wooly thud to biting attack just with the part of my striking fingers I use, or by changing pick type. I then approach EQ on the amp as EQ'ing for the room and not the instrument. Any other players here with this approach? I'm not saying we should all ditch our expensive onboard EQ's etc but try it sometime, it's quite refreshing! It's like having nowhere to hide! Cheers, James
Don't take this the wrong way mate, but I think this is down to unfamiliarity on your part. I play with my actives' controls a lot, onstage too. Small adjustments can make all the difference. If you've got your active controls all the way up, you're defeating the purpose of what they're for, you are using them as though they are passive electronics on steroids. Do you also turn all the controls on your amp to maximum? There are things your fingers can't do to the bass's tone.
 4.
Actually Steve, if neither of the gentlemen above are ahead of me or opt out, I'll take them.
Go for your life Chris, I'm not in.
 5.
Damn your two-a-side headstock Norris
Augmented by my damning too. I'd have loved them on my new P. As it is, i am tempted to stick them on my warwick fretless, but TBH, I love the LaBella Black Nylons that are on it. It's just seeing Pyramid Gold Flatwounds next to £20 that's got me going
 6. What scale length are they, Steve?
 7. Looks like a great day! I'm amazed there were no Wicks
 8.
To be honest, I'd far rather read i/views with lesser known players than yet another bloody article on *insert name of v.famous bassist here*. Dave Swift is a case in point -- most people have probably never heard of him, but his interview in BGM is one of the best they've ever had. Just my 2p.
Completely agree.
 9. Peace brother. Nx
 10.
When I was a nipper people used to say they wouldn't buy anything Japanese because of the war - but they didn't seem to say the same thing as often about the Germans.
How true !
 11.
What's wrong with you..? guitarists got on your tits..? I'd ignore Geddy Lee altogther if it were me... as I will do this thread now..
Ooh I say! I really like Joy Division, but it's generally depressing, as is your lack of a sense of humour. I should have put a smiley on for you, apologies. TBH, your post was way off beam, the guy just wanted to hear a great player who someone said he sounded like, not go deep in the woodshed for a year and come out with a big nose. Chill a bit, man, I was just kidding.
 12.
I too am fine about appearing in BGM ... although sadly it will probably be the only time
I can almost guarantee that pic of you with bassace playing his upright will get in, it's a classic shot.
 13.
Awesome looking Warwick you got there Silddx! you got a gear porn section on that bass?! if not why not?! I want more!
That's very kind mate, thank you! The thread of how I refinished it is here .. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...t=0&start=0 Cheers.
 14. When I was a nipper people used to, in a completely racist fashion, say stuff from Japan was sh*te, cheeky slopes copying our inventions and all that rubbish. I think the OP was being a bit naive with his post but in no way was it jingoistic.
 15.
Very good post. I like BGM, and it has certainly got better over recent issues, but it still lacks a certain something.
Nice to see so many more basses being reviewed though. That maybe demonstrates the manufacturers might be taking BGM more seriously.
 16. Seems most of you concur with the experts, never loosen your strings to ship or store a bass unless you loosen off the truss rod too. I read about a very large US distributor who has seen many warped necks as a result of slackening strings to ship basses. He advised to always keep the strings at concert pitch.
 17.
as with all these things, if you must, listen to his playing and general style and add it to your own arsenal... but who wants a clone..????
Yeah, that's a bit weird, dude. You a Joy Division fan or something?
 18.
Quick question for those who took these pics and to those IN the pics - does anyone mind if some of these are used in BGM in the next issue? I'll try and find out what happens regarding copyright and so on, but I didn't want to just let the editor choose from these pics without your permission. Also if you are in one of the pics and maybe you told the wife you were at work/doing DIY or whatever and you would prefer not to appear in the mag, please also let me know. Cheers ped
No problem at all from me.
 19. And what are your reasons?
 20.
I'm having a serious think about this one Nigel. How much including postage?
Hello mate, hope you're enjoying your new(ish) upright! How does £350 on your doorstep sound?
 21. I put one of these on a Fender Jap Jazz Bass Special. Really, really nice necks. Have a bump.
 22. Not forgetting that Geddy always says he was heavily inspired and influenced by Jack Bruce, so check out some Cream too. Always good to see where players are coming from, Jack Bruce influenced a hell of a lot of bassists. Re: chardbass, completely agree, Hemispheres and Moving Pictures.
 23.
Seriously, next time you're at a LOUD gig, go to the toilet and listen to the vocal tuning. Yeeeuuchh.
That doesn't work, you are getting a distorted view of reality. What matters is what is in the auditorium, not the bog. Watch videos of concerts on youtube and you'll get what's been heard. There have been quite a few studies of how frequency affects pitch perception. Try adding tons of low end to your bass sound next time you rehearse and you'll see how it affects pitch perception.
 24.
It's wierd how much better it sounds when people play music on it
25.
The H & K guitar amp sounded amazing, never heard one before but it blews the Marshalls away.
Interesting you seem to like RUSH sounds mate Alex Lifeson uses Hughes & Kettner. What make was the kit?
