1. I was just about to add that I think Raggy has one. I think the HHs are very popular, especially on the EB forums. For me, I think im going with a HS for my 5 string...just to have some choice....and because I do like single coils quite a lot. Thats me though.
2. Good luck with your choice, but don't leave us! I enjoy your posts and avatars! I say don't make too much effort until you find something that's really for you. At the moment I'm ready to get seriously annoyed with trying to get into my law career, but I won't give up... Give it some time and a break. Once a bassist always a bassist.
3. I think that amp with either of those cabs will be awesome...both suit tube amps very well. See what volumes you get going into the HS410 as its much more sensitive. I agree though, the Orange 115 is a very sweet smooth tone.
4. Love that maple neck! One thing Fender is superb on is basses that stay in tune. I've had other more expensive basses that really don't and it winds me up.
5.
Hello. I have a PBB StingrayHH. Rosewood neck + matching headstock. After much deliberation I settled on a plain black pickguard to go with it. Turned out to be the right choice with that combination, cos the PBB colour is so unusual (pictures don't do it justice) I think a fussy pickguard may have been too much. Maple or Rosewood? Doesn't matter really, its what you like best. BTW I think that the "main" musicman distributer in the UK is www.stringsandthings.co.uk So they can tell you who to order from locally. Expect up to 9 months lead time - despite what they say in the shop. Long wait - but worth it! When it eventually arrived tho, my bass was really well set up / just what I expected (better even) / no problems at all.
9 months! Actually this is good...it means I won't be totally devoid of money when it arrives. What I like about MM basses is they seem to match the QC of really high end gear...and their sound is individual.
6.
That does look really nice, doesn't it? Not much money either... £259 at GAK. Would make a nice cheap gigging bass.
£259! I'll be looking out for one of them! Great backup bass.
7. Personally I'd stay clear of the SVT 3. Nice character to the amp but the volume is pretty low on that amp...my friend uses one and has the volume up almost full. It's 450 watt apparently at 4 ohms but myself and my friend used my (now sold) Trace GP12SMX400 for another part of the gig, which is 400 watt, and that amp really did seem a LOT louder. Apparently Ampeg set the limiter to kick in at quite a low input gain. If you really are set on Ampeg, I think the SVT7 is quite a good idea. Light, Ampeg tone, loud!
8. I've been following the reviews on talkbass and I'm a bit apprehensive now. There is reports of poor shielding and the n3 pickups being very crisp and trebly...not what I would be after. The style is spot on....I'll await to try one out.
9. I'm doing exactly the same with a Ray 5. Contact a musicman stockist and discuss the options I think I'm opting for HS pickups, rosewood neck, tort plate, White. The single coil at the neck sounds awesome in the demos I've heard. If not that, sunburst. I'm also close to pulling the trigger on a classic series in 4 string format...but I am indecisive about the colour. I tried to step outside my world of Fender/Ernie Ball and failed miserably. I'm just used to them, in a good sense. Plus they look like a bass should
10.
On the bigger models I think they are the same recessed handles, But on the 1 x12s the DBs use straps, and the GS's use flightcase style handles.
Yep. This is true. I know for a fact the DB212s have the big recessed handles...and they are very effective. The DB112 use straps. I think this was perhaps to keep the internal volume up?! IMO, Aguilar make good cabinets, but their 12s seem to excel. If I had space and a roadie...the DB810 would be mine. Forget Berg NV...those massive Aggie cabs are where it's at
11. GS have great lows, slight mid scoop and sweet highs. Carpet covering and solid handles. DB are more punchy in the mids, same low end, sweet highs with great tweet, thicker heavier wood used, fancy tolex and style. Old style strap handles. Slightly heavier I believe and more expensive. The only thing with the tweed is it's not real tweed which is not a massive issue but realy tweed would have been a better option. All good choices IMO. I'm sellng my DBS sadly due to space...but Im probably going to get more Aguilar. The RS 210s are very nice cabinets...I've been following the glowing reports on talkbass.
12.
Well i'm in drop C tuning, so it's quite deep already. I like a lot of definition but not too bright, I usually roll the tweeters on my cab down a bit. I like the tone flea gets. i've got a GK 1001RB-II at the moment which gets me the sound I like, but its a bit too heavy to carry around everywhere (its in the f/s section)
Hmmm...I would give the rh a try if you can. Flea never seems sizzly to me...more warm and focussed. That's my preferred slap tone anyway...I'm not into sizzly high treble. If you find yourself rolling off tweets, the Genz might be just too hi fi and bright. This is just IMO.
13.
What type of music do you play? I'm in a funk rock band and play a lot of aggressive slap, so I'm not sure if a warm amp is what im after
Hmmm. What slap tine do you go for? Really modern bright and clean = Shuttle More vintage, warm, plenty of punch = RH450 Roughly...
14. Welcome to the Club dude! Sweet setup. I'm with Clarky...coolest looking amp around. How is that matamp cab?
15.
I'm thinking about getting the RH450 or the Shuttle 9.0, do you know how they compare to eachother? cheers
I had the Shuttle 9.0 for about 48 hours. It had a problem with the chassis, but I still managed to test it. Definitely not for me...no warmth and too clinical for me. Very bright and pingy. Didn't feel that loud. RH450 is opposite...warm, fluid, full, tubey (ish).
16. I was thinking about the classic ray 5, but with a 5 string I'd like to have the pickup selector switch. The Classic Ray 4 looks perfect...just need to decide on which Ray 5 and which to buy first. I know now after looking at the eb forum the alnico ray is what I'm after.
17. This is getting bumped. After failing with a Warwick5 (I just cannot get on with the necks and fret distance) Im going back to the original and more expensive plan. Im trusting EB with yet another bass and hoping it will be awesome. I have three options now one of my Rays has sold. Ray 4 Classic Series, Ray 5 H, Ray 5 HS. Hmmm! Im trying to find some demos of the Ray 5 H vs HS.
18.
Not overly sure yet, it depends how much I get for the gear I'm selling to pay for it... but at a guess, about £1k. How much do second hand SVT 3 Pro sell for?
You can pick one up quite cheap. If you aren't going full tube, I'd suggest a good warm amp like a little mark 3 with a vt bass or sansamp pedal. That way you have a quality amp with good volume and a near on tube dirt sound.
19.
I've pulled the trigger on one of these as well - should arrive in time for a gig next week Loving the tone on the rehearsal too - I never use flats and have always favoured a very bright tone but I'm definitely mellowing these days. Thinks to self - you have two sets of flats stored away, get them back out & try them on something
Sounds good! I am the same...I find my tone goals are mellowing.
20. Agreed. The most expensive and apparent 'best' might not be for you. I haven't heard a 112x2 or 212 in neo that was as full as ceramic. I still think there is a difference, and even jim berg said with his cabs the ceramics will go deeper and fuller. I've got the email somewhere. Aguilar are fantastic. Berg are fantastic but they are very clear...if you don't want that more clinical tone...Aguilar might be for you. Epifani are all about smooth and deep tones.
21. I'd like to get to this but would prove pricey to get down. I'm ordering a new Ray soon...either 5 H or 5 HS or Classic Series 4. Would have been good to test them. Can you help with advice on the models as I'm ordering through BM anyway?
22. The F1 looks awesome. The price now is also great...I'm very interested in the f1 and f500.
23. Bright and sparkly? Good news is a Neo cabinet might be suitable! Have you tried GK? They are SUPER bright.
24. Cheers guys....seems fairly reasonable on Interparcel. Insurance is hefty but its worth it.
